As a former undercover CIA officer, I’ve worked with my colleagues in the 114th Congress to approach the growing terrorist threat from a number of angles, including addressing the issue of terrorists’ ease of travel, combating terrorist recruitment strategies, and improving our own counterterrorism capabilities.
There are works of fiction which seek to explain jihadi terrorists as the militant wing of Amnesty International. I don’t buy that.
The terrorists that we are up against today do not rely upon cell phones and SAT phones and emails. They rely on couriers. You cannot intercept what a courier is telling somebody.
The Dome is a metaphor that could mean anything – it could be nuclear fallout, terrorists – I’ve always been fascinated with stories where people’s roles are flipped on their heads, be it the Wall Street guy, the techno guy, etc. All of those things are only successful when there are people and money around.
You see these terrorists that are flying planes into buildings, right? You see our cities getting shot up in California. You see Paris getting shot up. And then somebody complains when a terrorist gets waterboarded, which quite frankly is no different than what happens on college campuses and frat houses every day.
Now we’re dealing with a younger generation of terrorists that are very, very savvy with computer skills, very savvy over the Internet, and very savvy with social media of the likes that we have never seen before.
