The greatest problem in Japanese politics over the last two decades is that we put off what needed to be done. We have to overcome that.

I do want to learn the way to do it over here. I’m not really looking to just go about my way and do it in the Japanese way that I’ve been doing. Basically, I’ll try to get some advice, learn the way it’s done here and go about it.
Our country undergoes periodic episodes of extreme intolerance and fear of foreigners, refugees in particular. Not only were people of Japanese descent placed in internment camps during World War II, but so were some Italians and Germans.

In the late ’90s, we kind of took a sabbatical, and I got an invitation to play with a Japanese band and formed a supergroup called NiNa. It was Yuki from Judy and Mary and Masahide Sakuma from The Plastics, a Japanese equivalent of the B-52s. It went to No. 1 in Japan.
