The point of human evolution is adapting to circumstance. Not letting go of the old, but adapting it, is necessary.
We’re not the best, but we happen to be what evolution came up with.
Change is inevitable with the evolution of technology. In the ’70s, we had records. In the ’80s, we had CDs, and now we are living in the digital age. You can say it’s sad or unfortunate, but the reality is you’ve got to roll with the times and the technology.
Only flies have true halteres. In fact, the scientific term for flies, ‘diptera,’ means ‘two wings.’ Most insects, including bees, have two pairs of wings for a total of four. In flies, the hindwing pairs have been transformed through evolution into the halteres.
In the nineteenth century, many Anglican theologians, both evangelical and catholic, embraced positively the proposal of evolution.
Crises are harbingers of evolution.
Evolution isn’t just a take-it-or-leave-it story about where we came from. It’s an epic at the centre of life itself. It tells us we are part of nature in every respect.
The physical fabric of the world had to be such as to enable that ten billion year preliminary evolution to produce the raw materials of life. Without it there would not have been the chemical materials to allow life to evolve here on earth.
Evolution, climate change, and the construction of the physical universe down to its atoms are processes that we measure in millions or billions of years.
It is really want, rather than need, that drives the process of technological evolution.
America’s got a Darwin problem – and it matters. According to a 2009 Gallup poll taken on the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, fewer than 40% of Americans are willing to say that they ‘believe in evolution.’
Evolution is good for optimising and that is well understood. But evolution also creates things that no one knew were even possible.
As far as I’m concerned, if there is a supreme being then He chose organic evolution as a way of bringing into existence the natural world… which doesn’t seem to me to be necessarily blasphemous at all.
I do think evolution is an important aspect of keeping a tradition alive. If it freezes and remains very static in its form, it dies, and so a natural evolution has to occur.
Well, take the evolution of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It began as hackers’ rights. Then it became general civil liberties of everybody – government stay away.
I’m interested in using evolution to move forward into the future, to get biology to do a lot of new chemistry for us.
My inspiration is endless; I can’t define it. It is a constant flow and evolution. In general, I’m taking it from everywhere. People get nervous when they walk with me, as I’ll see something and suddenly have to text it to myself.
Mandela’s political evolution was gradual.
When you look at the trajectory of autonomous vehicles, I think you can look at the trajectory of other industries whether it’s aviation, I think is a really good one to look at, and you’ll see there’s always an evolution as the technology gets better and better.
In the jungle, size is king. Women like big men. That’s just evolution.
I just understand that life is a constant change and a constant evolution.
The more important a call to action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel about answering it. But to yield to Resistance deforms our spirit. It stunts us and makes us less than we are and were born to be.
Evolution is a bankrupt speculative philosophy, not a scientific fact.
Natural selection is not evolution.
Our evolution could have gone in different directions a lot of times. We could have gone extinct at some points. We might not have gotten our big brains, or Neanderthals might have made it while we did not.
People have always asked whether evolution is constantly driving onwards and upwards. Is there always going to be improvement? The answer is no: evolution is a progression of form and function, but it is not purposeful.
Real biologists who actually do the research will tell you that they almost never find a phenomenon, no matter how odd or irrelevant it looks when they first see it, that doesn’t prove to serve a function. The outcome itself may be due to small accidents of evolution.
My laboratory uses evolution to design new enzymes. No one really knows how to design them – they are tremendously complicated. But we are learning how to use evolution to make new ones, just as nature does.
Anywhere in the world, there is royal food, and there is commoner food. Essentially, eat at the restaurant or eat on the street. But Indian food evolved in three spaces. Home kitchens were a big space for food evolution, and we have never given them enough credit.
There’s a theory that says that life is based on a competition and the struggle and the fight for survival, and it’s interesting because when you look at the fractal character of evolution, it’s totally different. It’s based on cooperation among the elements in the geometry and not competition.
Teaching creationism in science class as an alternative to evolution is inappropriate.
You can graph human evolution, which is mostly a straight line, but we do get better and change over time, and you can graph technological evolution, which is a line that’s going straight up. They are going to intersect each other at some point, and that’s happening now.
I feel that whole vibe of that tomboy chic thing that’s been introduced years ago by Alexa Chung and things in that sort of evolution is what I like to wear. I just like to look effortless because I don’t want to put too much effort into it.
Evolution happens in nature and in individuals. I want to participate actively in its happening within me.
That’s the way I try to live. I think it’s the only way for human beings at this point in our evolution as souls, where everyone in their lifetime is going through stuff.
I was taught that the human brain was the crowning glory of evolution so far, but I think it’s a very poor scheme for survival.
At the Global Crop Diversity Trust, we work to conserve the diversity that will allow the adaptation and evolution of our agricultural crops in the context of climate change and other challenges.
No single discovery from any of these fields denotes proof of evolution, but together they reveal that life evolved in a certain sequence by a particular process.
What is sad to me is not what Bill Nye thinks about me. What I found really unfortunate is that after presenting my stand on God’s Word, there were a number of Christians who were more complimentary of Bill Nye than of me because Bill Nye was defending evolution and billions of years.
When I watch ‘Mad Men’ and I see the patronising attitudes to women that are so shocking for all of us to watch now, I feel that I’ve lived and see the same evolution in this regard around disability.
Being a part of WWE Evolution, to me, is one of my greatest accomplishments.
It might sound like I’m a dreamer, but economic models have reached their height of evolution. Technology has evolved. What hasn’t evolved is mankind’s spirituality; everything is from 3,000 years ago. With spirituality comes morals, a better way of thinking.
Religion and science are the two conjugated faces or phases of one and the same complete act of knowledge – the only one which can embrace the past and future of evolution and so contemplate, measure and fulfil them.
Radiation is one of the important factors in evolution. It causes mutation, and some level of mutation is actually good for evolution.
If you look at the evolution of games from console to Internet to mobile, and look at social networking from Web to mobile, everything is fragmenting.
In the end, a lifeform is always a hybrid, a being endowed with some X-power such as being able to breathe for a few seconds out of water. That’s how evolution works. Spectrally. We are all mermaids.
Part of my evolution has been to learn how painful most people’s childhoods are. They grow up not liking themselves, not loving themselves. Ask people if they were lovable the minute they were born, and watch them sit back and have to think about it. One lady said, ‘I suppose so.’ That’s painful.
I had no idea I was gonna be a songwriter, because I was too young to know my own evolution. I started playing the violin as a way to express myself because I didn’t have a lot of vocabulary when I was 14.
Evolution isn’t true, because if we evolved from monkeys, how can they still be here?
Some people would claim that things like love, joy and beauty belong to a different category from science and can’t be described in scientific terms, but I think they can now be explained by the theory of evolution.
When you deal with something like compassion for physical pain, which we know is very, very old in evolution – we can find evidence for it in nonhuman species – the brain processes it at a faster speed. Compassion for mental pain took many seconds longer.
If there remain places on the planet that are un-known, unspoilt corners, a laboratory for evolution still exists – a snapshot of what the rainforests, polar deserts and high mountains were once like, before man.
Darwin didn’t walk around the Galapagos and come up with the theory of evolution. He was exploring, collecting, making observations. It wasn’t until he got back and went through the samples that he noticed the differences among them and put them in context.
