I’m in talk radio. A story breaks, I need an opinion. I’m not ESPN News.
If Democrats don’t go on Fox News, it doesn’t mean that people stop watching.
Examine our every action through the lens of how we would feel if it were to become front page news.
The media transforms the great silence of things into its opposite. Formerly constituting a secret, the real now talks constantly. News reports, information, statistics, and surveys are everywhere.
We made satires of everything – news broadcasts and TV shows that we watched. When I look at them now, they are totally amateurish, but I find it quite remarkable that we were so skeptical of the world! My parents watched them and thought they were funny; they really encouraged us.
I don’t think Fox News or Rush Limbaugh need Clinton it turns out. I think there’s a hunger out there for – whether it’s on the left or right – a more lively and provocative type of political journalism. I think Salon and Fox on the other side have both benefited from that.
The people who whine about Fox News are hypocrites – they say they’re totally tolerant, but when they run into someone who doesn’t share their assumptions, they say, ‘Fox News is evil, and it must be stopped.’
Television’s very dependent on images. That’s not what news is.
When I was a kid it was big news when someone flew around the world in a little aeroplane, but nobody cared when I did it. Then, to rub salt into my wounds, the customs people ripped my aeroplane to pieces, looking for stuff.
Sjogren’s is something you live with your whole life. The good news for me is now I know what’s happening after spending years not knowing… I feel like I can get better and move on.
We live in such a sheltered environment in the United States. I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled all over the world, and I’ve seen things you only read about and see on the news.
On the rare occasions when U.N. blue helmets have made the news in the past, it has unfortunately too often been in the context of situations where peacekeepers have failed to shield civilians, or even when the peacekeepers themselves have been involved in abuse.
In the past ABC has made half-hearted efforts or, worse, cosmetic efforts, to do something about news and I wasn’t certain about what their real aim was – nor am I now.
I’ve been a radio and television news person since I was 19 years old. I’m 57 years old now. But the advantage is that I have studied, investigated, and reported over those years on nearly every major story from wars and recessions to grass roots local issues.
There’s no such thing as good news in America.
Cynics will say there are no good people out there. And if you read the papers and watch TV news you could be convinced of that. But there are good people.
I do want to write about Jane Whitefield again, but only when I have a good enough idea – something I’ve figured out about her that’s news and that’s worth a reader’s time.
You know, the media and politicians are always gonna be in a bit of tension with one another and probably most of the time that’s healthy and indeed even creative. But it’s where – it’s really when news organisations are used as kind of instruments of politics that it gets tricky.
To me, involvement with news is absolutely inebriating. It’s what makes my life exciting.
I think most people live in a space where they are looking for meaning in life and good in the world and that is not necessarily reflected in straight news coverage right now.
Rarely, if ever, has a cable news channel employed a host who has previously campaigned for the business goals of the channel’s parent company. But as channels like MSNBC have moved to more opinionated formats, they have exposed themselves to potential conflicts.
I had a great time on News Radio, I got to make tons of money in relative obscurity and learn a lot about the TV biz and work on my standup act constantly. It was a dream gig.
I don’t ever want to become Bill Maher where I have to find some strong opinion on something just because it’s in the news. That’s the guy that comes off like you have to be angry every week about new topics and snotty about something. That’s what I’m trying to avoid.
Ideological warriors whether from the Left or the Right are bad news for the bench. They tend to make law, not interpret law. And that’s not what any of us should want from our judges.
One thing we seem to be missing is that just as we no longer search for the news, the news finds us today (e.g. this article found me) we will no longer search for products and services, rather we will look to our social graph to what products and services they like and don’t like.
Every news organization should ideally be as broadly representative as possible.
Everyone should get their news however they want to and in whatever form they want. I’m not going to sit back in judgment of other people and the way they do it.
What a newspaper needs in its news, in its headlines, and on its editorial page is terseness, humor, descriptive power, satire, originality, good literary style, clever condensation, and accuracy, accuracy, accuracy!
My understanding of racial discrimination as a child was highly distorted because the most prominent man in Archery was an African-American bishop. When he came home from up north, where he was in charge of A.M.E. churches in five states, it was front-page news. He was the most successful man in my life.
Anything that reduces fuel consumption and cuts down on greenhouse gasses is good news.
I cannot improve on those spoken for many years by a true legend who preceded me at CBS News. He would say, simply, ‘good night, and good luck.’
Music is the major form of communication. It’s the commonest vibration, the people’s news broadcast, especially for kids.
These landscapes aren’t breaking news or necessarily even illegal. These are intentional, purposeful landscapes, whether to extend our cities or build a mine or put a road in or clear a forest. I’ve been photographing that which has been intended by us; it’s not an accident.
The news anchor is exactly that – an anchor, a center, a focus.
To say that a humorist exaggerates to get big laughs, I don’t see how that’s big news.
Financial news services and other media organizations get press releases 15 minutes before they are distributed to the general public, fueling a furious competition among the news services to rewrite them for their subscribers during their window of exclusivity.
Something’s happened in our society which I don’t think is beneficial, and that’s that you see the public being fed box-office news. Newscasts now, every local station – I’ve been traveling around the country a lot, and you see the local news, and they give box-office reports.
The only thing I’d ever done with news was to read copy sitting at the microphone in the studio.
People can say anything they want to. If they don’t want to get the news from me, get it from somebody else. It’s not something I’m going to worry about, I’m sorry.
Back in the ’70s, like one of my favorite movies ever was ‘The Bad News Bears’, and that was a kids’ movie, but I don’t think of it that way. I think of it as just a great movie because Walter Matthau was so funny and so harsh with those kids.
The phrase ‘fake news’ sounds too playful, too much like a schoolchild faking illness to get out of a test.
Everyone wants to be safe. Well, I got news for you: You can’t be safe. Life’s not safe. Your work isn’t safe. When you leave the house, it isn’t safe. The air you breathe isn’t going to be safe, not for very long. That’s why you have to enjoy the moment.
The good news about me is that my friends and social network is entirely independent of politics.
If it’s far away, it’s news, but if it’s close at home, it’s sociology.
Everything is being compressed into tiny tablets. You take a little pill of news every day – 23 minutes – and that’s supposed to be enough.
The nature of Homeland Security is that no news is good news. And no news sometimes means somebody got interdicted at the border, somebody got interdicted before they could get on an airplane, somebody was arrested providing material support to terrorism. Homeland Security means very often something you never hear about.
A good reader or viewer is a person who is alert about her newspaper or news channel. A good reader or viewer will never waste her hard-earned money in watching or reading just anything. She is serious. She will have to think if the news she is consuming is journalism or sycophancy.
My main expertise is in the past, but if I have to extrapolate into the future, I would say: no good news any time soon and an obvious exit strategy is not apparent to me.
The only gossip I’m interested in is things from the Weekly World News – ‘Woman’s bra bursts, 11 injured’. That kind of thing.
The state of Michigan going to Trump was an amazing thing. Of course the fake news media was shocked; they never considered that white working class residents of Michigan may not like being called evil racists clinging to guns and Bibles.
We sort of read two or three big newspapers but we don’t get the flavor of the local events, the local news as much.
I remember back in the day when Chuck D called hip-hop the ‘black people’s CNN.’ Well now, hip-hop is more like Fox News. It’s biased, and highly suspect.
Today, models are able to share industry news, trends, and communicate with fans through Twitter, Instagram and blogs. So in a way, our position as models is way more personable and relatable.
