The great thing for me about ‘The Resurrection of Gavin Stone’ is it’s a throwback to the old fashioned Hollywood movie that you can watch with your family, has a message, and is funny and entertaining. They didn’t call them faith-based movies; they just called them good movies.
My mom and dad – they were always there. They were always on the set. They focused on our family life. The entertainment business wasn’t the end-all. They weren’t out to get the next big paycheck or the next big movie. It was about ‘What can we do as a family.’
The difference between a movie star and a movie actor is this – a movie star will say, ‘How can I change the script to suit me?’ and a movie actor will say. ‘How can I change me to suit the script?’
Storytelling is the only studio movie where the censorship is perfectly clear, the only studio movie with a big red box covering up a shot. I take pride in that – and, of course, in having avoided the fate of Eyes Wide Shut.
I did a dance with Fred Astaire in the movie ‘Bandwagon.’ I got to waltz just from left of camera to right of camera, and I’m taller than Fred Astaire. Fortunately, I was wearing a long skirt, so I waltzed with bended knees.
I dream for a living. Once a month the sky falls on my head, I come to, and I see another movie I want to make.
To me, what separates a funny movie from a good movie is something personal.
‘Chronicle’ could have been a video-game movie. The original ‘RoboCop’ and the remake could have come from video games.
I’m told we movie critics praise movies that are long and boring.
What happens is this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work. You go to a movie, you only go once. But the tabloids and Internet are everywhere. You can really subsume the public image of somebody.
I never thought ‘Sodapop Curtis’ would announce my retirement. I always thought I would be the one to announce it. I’m a huge fan of the movie, but that caught me way off guard. I can’t explain it.
My movie is born first in my head, dies on paper; is resuscitated by the living persons and real objects I use, which are killed on film but, placed in a certain order and projected on to a screen, come to life again like flowers in water.
I cannot state enough how important post-production is for the success of a horror movie. You bring so much to it with the way you edit it, the way it is sound-designed, and the way the music works with it.
A good song should give you a lot of images; you should be able to make your own little movie in your head to a good song.
I don’t think a movie today that captured all the things that we did in the seventies could come close, because it’s like asking to recreate the seventies and the audience sensibilities and that’s impossible.
When I was very young I wanted to be a professional horseback rider. Then I wanted to be a pop singer. Then I wanted to be a psychiatrist. Then I wanted to be a movie director.
Each day a few more lies eat into the seed with which we are born, little institutional lies from the print of newspapers, the shock waves of television, and the sentimental cheats of the movie screen.
I just don’t know what makes a movie catch on and other ones don’t.
I often feel that my days in New York City, that I was here for five years, didn’t get one job, went on a thousands of auditions and literally did not get a job on a soap, not a movie, not TV, not nothing, although I did do some commercials thank God.
I am so happy because I want more people to like martial arts movie not just martial arts audience. Even martial arts can be used in comedy, in drama, in horror movies, in different kinds of movies.
I was a child actor in ‘Deliverance,’ but not the banjo player. It was my dad’s big movie as a director, and at the very end there’s a scene where Jon Voight comes home to his wife. I played his young son.
I love Lars von Trier. ‘Dogville’ is my favourite movie of the last 20 years. ‘Nymphomaniac’ and ‘Melancholia’ aren’t quite as exciting as ‘The Kingdom’, ‘Breaking the Waves’, or ‘The Idiots’, but I’ll always love him for being him.
I was in a movie with Angelina Jolie called ‘Life Or Something Like It’ where I played her fiance, and I have a song in there.
I loved doing Judge Doom in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit.’ I’m constantly running into people who saw that movie when they were kids, and it absolutely horrified them.
I can never read this book, just like I can never see a movie that I wrote a screenplay for. I can read it and see it physically, but I can’t accurately judge it. I’m too close to it. If I read it ten times I’ll have ten different reactions.
The movie I’ve seen the most is ‘Ghostbusters’ or ‘Ghostbusters II.’ I used to watch those movies nonstop.
I really liked John Candy in ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles.’ He was so good in that movie.
Bullies are often people who are shy and can’t make friends easily, so, as the theme of the movie ‘A Bronx Tale’ tells us, it is better to be feared if you can’t be loved.
The sky is an infinite movie to me. I never get tired of looking at what’s happening up there.
I always felt like a movie star.
Bernard Herrmann used to write all his scores by himself. So did Bach, Beethoven and Stravinsky. I don’t understand why this happens in the movie industry.
You don’t want to be the guy whose back’s to the camera in the emotional part of the movie. So, you have to be aware of the camera movement and what the camera’s doing.
I stepped into the martial arts movie market when I was only 16. I think I have proved my ability in this field and it won’t make sense for me to continue for another five or 10 years.
I think that a good movie creates its own world, and that world needn’t refer to anything that’s real. If it’s consistent, if it’s entertaining, if it’s interesting, it justifies its being there.
I would love to do a Black Widow movie. That’s perfect, I would love to do that. That character is really interesting: she doesn’t have any superpowers; she just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating, yeah.
Humans love sex, we need sex, it’s how we connect, it reminds us we’re alive, it’s the third most basic human need, after food and good movie popcorn.
On holidays, I spent time alone at home watching a movie, reading a book, and contemplating. Now that I think about it, if I hadn’t had that time, I probably wouldn’t have been able to do acting.
In a way, the truth is that I was dreaming to do a movie in the United States just because, as a filmmaker, I always loved the idea of trying to make movies in a different culture, in a different way. It’s always interesting to make a movie abroad.
I’m a big Batman fan; to be honest, to be a part of any superhero movie would really fulfill all of my childhood fantasies. If I could get beaten up by Batman, and just be part of the franchise, even getting kicked through a window would be great!
My plan is to have a theatre in some small town or something and I’ll be manager. Ill be the crazy old movie guy.
The business of horror movies goes up and down, and people are always like, ‘It’s working,’ ‘It’s not working,’ but generally, I think if you make a good movie that’s scary, people will come.
The marvels of daily life are exciting; no movie director can arrange the unexpected that you find in the street.
I want to make a good, solid kung fu movie.
One of the great pleasures of going to see a Daniel Day-Lewis film: you haven’t seen him in five years. Where have you been? So, it’s a special event, right? Well, if you want to go see a movie that I’m in, it still may be a special event for you, but, you don’t feel like you don’t know where I’ve been.
When I was a kid, I loved Elvis, and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. But I had no connection to Hollywood – and being a movie star was such a far-fetched idea, growing up in Hawaii.
It’s possible for me to make a bad movie out of a good script, but I can’t make a good movie from a bad script.
‘Animal House’ was my first movie, so I didn’t have anything to compare it to. I was a sight gag more than anything else. So I can’t say it was one of those things where your life changes. When the movie came out, I had to ask for the night off at the bar.
Whenever I finish a movie, I usually go through a period where I think I’ll never have another idea. And then, somehow, you get another idea.
Alan Cumming was such a fun guy to watch. I remember he has a song in the first ‘Spy Kids’ movie, and when Danny Elfman came to set, they were working on the song.
I cry very easily. It can be a movie, a phone conversation, a sunset – tears are words waiting to be written.
My father didn’t do a lot of direct education. My mother was the direct educator. She would put on these movies on American Movie Classics when we got cable, after my parents got divorced, which took like four or five years.
I would want the audience to simply see the character I portray in each movie in its true essence because I feel acting is all about truthfully portraying the character.
When I was in high school, there was ‘Superbad’ and ‘The Girl Next Door’ and ‘Wedding Crashers’ and all these great movies. You hope to be a part of something that’s smart, funny and in that Todd Phillips-vein. You want to make something like ‘Superbad.’ That movie was so good and so funny.
