I don’t want to be mean to people. I try to be as nice as possible to everyone.
You try to do the best with what you’ve got and ignore everything else. That’s why horses get blinders in horse racing: You look at the horse next to you, and you lose a step.
I think the kids in school that laughed at the clothes that we wore and the house that we lived in, and then my mother had to cut hair… I think that was a good motivator. Every time they laughed at me, they just built a fire, and there was only one way to put it out – to try and show ’em I was as good as they were.
I try to keep in mind that it’s a long journey. It’s not a race. It’s about staying focused, continuing to do good work, make my family and community proud; that’s all I really want to do… and pay my bills.

I have too much respect for people to try to control them. But they are estranged from love, afraid to reach out and touch one another. We’re afraid to appear sentimental or speak in platitudes because people will say, ‘What a jerk!’ It takes courage in our culture to be a lover.
You fight, you try your best, but if you lose, you don’t have to break five racquets and smash up the locker room. You can do those things, but when you’ve finished, nothing’s changed. You’ve still lost. If something positive came from that, I probably would do it. But I see only negativity.
So many people are looking at what’s wrong, and I try to encourage them to look at what’s right in their life. A lot of people have it a lot worse than you do.

Just try to be happy. Unhappiness starts with wanting to be happier.
When I was in Cambridge reading mathematics, I went to Amsterdam for the International Mathematics Congress. There I saw M.C. Escher’s fascinating work. That inspired me to try my hand at drawing such impossibilities.

I think the path is different for everybody. Go after the doors that are open to you. That has always been my motto getting into the music business. Do the things that seem to be good opportunities and work hard at it. Try to make good decisions and be nice. Hopefully all of that will pay off at some point.
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.
I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.

I try to tell all the – not even the kids, even people older than me – to just be themselves. Don’t wear what I wear ’cause I wear it; wear what you like.
There’s nothing scarier than silence. A lot of horror movies lean on hits and score to try and create tension, which actually does the opposite. The best scares come from a desire to see the character overcome what they’re dealing with in the scene. If you care about the character you’ll care about the scare.
I think you always need to try your best, but at the same time you can only do what you can do, and you don’t need to beat yourself up about it.
If you just try long enough and hard enough, you can always manage to boot yourself in the posterior.
