Winning may not be everything, but losing has little to recommend it.
For me, winning isn’t something that happens suddenly on the field when the whistle blows and the crowds roar. Winning is something that builds physically and mentally every day that you train and every night that you dream.
I’m not an old, experienced hand at politics. But I am now seasoned enough to have learned that the hardest thing about any political campaign is how to win without proving that you are unworthy of winning.
I’m not a big fan of the thought that you can become a star by winning a contest. I’m sort of old-fashioned. I think people need to get out there and they need to work and they need to do their music because they love it. If they become successful, then great, and if they are not, whatever.
I was trying to find an original style that didn’t sound like Tony Bennett or anyone else. So I prayed about it, woke up with this high voice, and by 1954, I was going to amateur nights and winning.
What’s a good tournament for him? Winning it. He’s good enough.
No matter how much you’ve won, no matter how many games, no matter how many championships, no matter how many Super Bowls, you’re not winning now, so you stink.
As a kid, you dream of winning the Stanley Cup. As you get older, you understand the importance of winning the Olympics.
Seed investing is the status symbol of Silicon Valley. Most people don’t want Ferraris, they want a winning seed investment.
For sure, 2010 was the best year I’ve ever had. It couldn’t have gone any better for me. Even if I just won the Olympic gold medal, that would have made it the best year of my career and the best day of my life, period. Winning the World Cup races and the overall title just topped it off.
People see me on the court only as a superhero, grunting and winning. They think you’re a robot, and I’m not.
The biggest thing I learned from losing? Winning’s better.
By turning negatives into positives, losing into a journey to winning, I have been able to overcome the odds that were against me into motivation for my success.
I find that after every win, there is a new surge in motivation because it feels so good. I am addicted to winning. That sounds terrible, but it is true you are addicted to that feeling.
Winning a Grammy is always going to be good.
When you play in the Premier League, say you’re playing against a lower-end team, they set up to defend all the time, they set up to block you off. But when you play in the Champions League, all the other teams are used to winning every week, so it’s more of an open game, it’s more attacking, end-to-end.
Ben Roethlisberger is a proven winner in athletic competition. But the measure of a true leader is how they conduct themselves 24/7, not just during a winning touchdown drive or a goal-line stance. Leadership isn’t something that gets switched off because the game clock expires.
For me, half the joy of achieving has been the struggle and the fight, the pitting myself against the world and all its competition – and winning.
To have the opportunity to work with Tiger Woods was just so awesome. I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the challenge. I enjoyed the good parts where he was winning. And I enjoyed the challenge to help him get better. But six years was enough.
It’s not hard to motivate myself because once you get a taste for winning races, you simply don’t want to do anything else. You get a buzz from it. You want it every day. Only someone who has experienced winning can understand how good it feels.
That level of trade deficit throttles real growth in our country and continues the unfortunate path of selling out America. We are not winning the global trade war, we are losing it badly.
Winning takes precedence over all. There’s no gray area. No almosts.
When you win a Grammy… you’re thinking about you winning. It is amazing. Your peers and folks in the record business are saying, ‘This is what we think of you.’ And that’s why the Grammy will always be, to me, the ultimate in what you get as far as a music trophy, because it is the one.
Much as Cold War nuclear strategists could argue about winning a nuclear war by having more survivors, advocates of a Global Warming War might see the United States, Western Europe, or Russia as better able to ride out climate disruption and manipulation than, say, China or the countries of the Middle East.
You have to get your motivation from within, and it doesn’t matter if you lose in the quarters, the semis, or the final. You must want to have another chance of winning the trophy.
No one wants to quit when he’s losing and no one wants to quit when he’s winning.
The only way to get back the confidence is to play and win matches. You can practise as much as you like, but you need confidence that comes from playing and winning matches.
Winning excuses everything.
Making the best-seller list is a big deal; it’s like being nominated for an Oscar. Hitting No. 1 is like actually winning the award. It’s very gratifying.
I suppose I’m happy when I know I’ve given a horse a good ride, no matter where it is. I like playing golf in the summer; I’m happy when I hit a good shot, and I enjoy watching Arsenal playing beautiful football, but overall I can’t believe you can be happy when you’re not winning. I honestly can’t accept that.
One of the problems we saw in the last presidential election in our party is that our nominee, while winning the election, which we ought never to forget, often lost sight of the difference between strategy and tactics.
Let’s face it, I’m not winning a fight with anybody – unless it’s against someone like Larry David.
Winning times in the New York City Marathon have not dropped all that much over the years, but rather U.S. runners went backward. In 1983, there were 267 U.S. men who broke 2:20 in a marathon, and by 2000 that number was down to 27.
I don’t think it’s fair to 12-, 13- and 14-year-olds to say ‘Show us you’re a winner right now!’ Winning isn’t everything. I’ll never buy that thing that if a boy loses a football game, he’s a loser in life.
It’s low-key depressing when you’re not winning.
Anyone can support a team that is winning – it takes no courage. But to stand behind a team to defend a team when it is down and really needs you, that takes a lot of courage.
Don’t fight a battle if you don’t gain anything by winning.
I have some great memories from the Olympics I also have some tough memories from it as well, where I was so close to winning a gold medal.
A friend told me about the casting notice for ‘Queer Eye.’ I was in Chicago and I had a contract with ‘Esquire’ magazine, so had been coming to New York City regularly and thought I’d catch a cheap flight, crash on a friend’s sofa and do this hilarious audition that I had no chance of winning.
I’m never tired of winning, and I’m never tired of skiing.
Just small things are going to hopefully lead to a bigger surplus in the end. Obviously, you might not see it every single game, every single detail, but those small things and those small details add up so much, and that’s what creates winning.
Arsenal have won that advantage, nobody gave it to them. By playing fantastic football and by winning matches and by winning trophies, they won that respect that the opponent has for them.

I was certainly never conscious of ‘playing the woman.’ I would not have approved of that. It is not a winning tactic. I operated in the world as I found it, and it was a man’s world.
If Democrats start consistently winning Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada, the electoral outlook for Republicans in the future is mighty bleak.
My goals have changed throughout my life. At one time it was winning awards, selling out concert dates, selling more albums than anyone else. Now, my goals are to see my grandchildren grown, live a long and healthy life with my family and friends and travel the world.
Winning a pageant or sometimes simply participating in a contest can change your life. Outer beauty is just a part of the judgement, but what’s important are your views and opinions that are shown to the world.
You know what Americans are really sensitive to? Issues of fairness. I think this is a modern phenomenon, born of the civil rights movement. Once you convince Americans that something is basically unfair, you’ve got a winning cause.
