It was about working with other musicians, but more than that it’s about exploring musical areas that you could never do with the band you’re in, in my case Judas Priest. You could tackle musical areas and lyrical areas that wouldn’t be appropriate for Priest.
When I came up with KRS-One and Rakim, everybody had to step their lyrical game up to build a fan base.
Eminem has been someone that I’ve always considered the greatest ever, to ever do it. You know what I mean? In every aspect, the storytelling abilities, lyrical ability, honesty. You can hear it in my music that I’m heavily influenced by that.
Biggie was a lyrical genius: he was a musical painter with words. As he rapped, you would see the picture come to life as you heard his story. You hear a lot of rappers rap; you hear a lot of singers sing, but you don’t see the movie in your head the way you do when you hear Biggie rap.
Sometimes, the songs that really affected me were not from the artist catalogue of their music, like the song ‘Thunder Road’ by Bruce Springsteen. I never got into any of his other music, but that song, to this day, is in my top three lyrical masterpieces of all time.
I love the feeling of creating pictures in someone’s mind just by spelling out the right lyrical combination.
I feel like when you listen to music, it’s almost like the same thing over and over, but of course as time goes on, rappers evolve, lyrical play evolves.
Eminem is a major star. Em and JAY-Z have achieved things that I have never came close to achieving in my life. They are both major stars in Hip Hop. And to top it off, they are both very lyrical.
The name Dirtee Stank came from a lyric I had when I was 17 or 16. Lyrical tank, like my name was Frank, going on dirty, going on stank. It sounded like a good name!
‘Angels in America’ – which is composed of two three-hour plays, ‘Millennium Approaches’ and ‘Perestroika’ – proved to be a watershed drama, the most lyrical and ambitious augury of an era since Tennessee Williams’s ‘The Glass Menagerie.’
I have been accused of being a very simplistic, very lyrical player, and that’s okay. That just comes from the blues, which is my background. But every day you wake up and transcend. You can’t ever rest on your laurels.
My lyrical content is all about entertainment.
