I’m not a really big comic book person. I know the typical ones – ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Storm’ and that stuff. But don’t quiz me, because I’m not good at things like that.

I always loved as a kid reading ‘Spider-Man,’ and the ‘Fantastic Four’ would show up… it was all about that larger universe.

Plans for a Spider-Man film had gone on for so long. It was starting to look like there would never be a film. There was always a different actor, or a different director they were talking about.

The power of the print reviewer is one of those urban myths. There have always been shows that slipped under the critical radar to become popular successes: ‘Tobacco Road’, ‘Abie’s Irish Rose’ and our old friend ‘Spider-Man’, which got the worst reviews in theatre history and is still apparently going strong.

I feel like I’ve been playing Spider-Man my whole life. He’s a character I’ve been pretending to be in my bedroom since I was a kid – so I’ve been preparing for this forever, I think.

Every significant book at Marvel had its key antagonist. ‘The Fantastic Four’ had Doctor Doom; ‘Spider-Man’ had Doc Ock, among others; Thor had Loki, if not Surtur. Without Magneto, the X-Men had nobody.

As cool as it is to be Spider-Man at times, there’s also a price to pay for that – and he has to learn to balance things out.

Sometimes, you’ll watch the news and you’ll see two-year-old boys in South Africa, wearing ‘Spider-Man’ t-shirts. It’s such a global phenomenon.

We even did a re-imagining of ‘Spider-Man’ that James Franco starred in that didn’t make it into ‘This Is The End’. That didn’t make the final cut, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it made the DVD.

I remember actually going to see the first ‘Avengers’ with one of my best mates from home. I’d never have dreamed that I’d be in one of these movies, let alone playing Spider-Man.

The kids all literally think I’m Spider-Man, and they ask me how I shoot my webs. It’s flattering and crazy, but it’s Spider-Man they’re in awe of, not Jake Epstein.
