Astaire was ballroom, basically, and Gene Kelly had such athleticism – that’s always what I responded to and what just blew my head open when I watched Gene Kelly’s numbers. But, Fred Astaire was just so incredibly inventive and so, so smooth – so smooth.
When my dad, Tommy Tucker Kelly, was about six, he started out with his dad on ‘The Black and White Minstrel’ Shows.
Desegregation came very painfully to the Boston schools, long after John Kelly finished high school, and the pain of desegregating Boston schools was visited entirely on the students who looked like Frederica Wilson.
I don’t admire one particular style, but for evening events, I always look to Grace Kelly for inspiration.
Music was always part of my life – my mother says I came out singing. I wanted to be Gene Kelly – or Judy Garland.
I’m definitely not a karaoke man, but I like to try stuff, so I’d get up on stage and give it a go. It would have to be something cheesy – karaoke always is – so maybe R. Kelly, ‘The World’s Greatest.’
When I think about old Hollywood and the glamour of those days, women like Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and Audrey Hepburn were not dressing the way some girls dress today. There was a certain mystery about them, and I feel like that’s gone in our industry.
When I was 11, I won my first nationals at Savannah, defeating Kelly Henry in the finals.
People think we choreograph. We dance four years in clubs. We watch videos every day. We do a step, it ends up a sensation, and for us it was just a copy maybe of a Gene Kelly video.
As far as people whose style interests me, I’d say Grace Kelly, Gwen, Spice Girls, Victoria Beckham, and that nanny called Fran.
I’m quite loud. When I was in film and TV, people were always saying, ‘Oh Kelly, make it smaller, make it smaller.’
I am the biggest Destiny’s Child – Beyonce, Kelly, Michelle, all of them – fan in the world.
I wish I was born in that era: dancing with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, going to work at the studio dressed in beautiful pants, head scarves, and sunglasses.
Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor – those were my idols. All I ever wanted to be was a motion picture song-and-dance man. I kind of fell into other things. Did walk-ons and bits for years and worked in little theater at night.
I understand that not everyone agrees with my perspective on Ray Kelly. But what you gotta look at here is somebody like Bill de Blasio talking out of both sides of his mouth and trying to have it both ways on a really critical issue like stop-and-frisk.
I’ve dressed thousands of actors, actresses and animals, but whenever I am asked which star is my personal favorite, I answer, ‘Grace Kelly.’ She is a charming lady, a most gifted actress and, to me, a valued friend.
I went to anything that was on at the Lyceum in Edinburgh. I was quite geeky. There was a production of ‘Look Back in Anger’ with David Tennant and Kelly Reilly in it, and it blew me away. I still think about it and look back on it as the moment where I decided, ‘I want to do that.’
I’m really influenced by Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.
I have always loved fashion and clothes. I mean, I was Grace Kelly for Halloween in fifth grade, which is why going to Monaco was so incredible – I’ve always kind of been obsessed with her.
I was like Gene Kelly, it was called singing in the rain. No seriously, I wasn’t really born with a singing voice, but my friends Joe and John taught me how to sing.
The viewer I picture in my mind when I do ‘The Kelly File’ is a woman who’s had a long day, either with the kids or at work, or both.
I like Jim Kelly.
Kelly Clarkson definitely reminds me of Motown. She’s pop, but she’s also very, very soulful.
Gene Kelly was a little tough, and he used to yell at me on the set.
My wife and I were actually driving in the south of France when we got the word that Kelly Clarkson had come out that ‘The Plant Paradox’ had changed her life. I’m a big fan of hers. I like her music and I would love to work with her.
I love the old Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly movies; they’re so beautiful to look at. It’s such a shame we don’t make them anymore. Although, I don’t know how you could make tap dancing current and topical.
My inspiration is R. Kelly, Michael Jackson, and Prince – for the vocals, anyway.
Chip Kelly, he is a great guy.
A lot of these girls have a goal in life to find a rich guy. I can smell it from a mile away. They won’t catch me! I know what they look like. They come with their little Kelly bag and their Rolex and the Louboutin shoes that are slightly too sexy. Shove off! Do you think I’m going to be the next sucker here?
My fashion icons are Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner. Their classic looks and clean lines should be the cornerstones of your wardrobe – white cotton shirts, black Capri pants, pencil skirts and ballerina skirts.
I’ve done that I was touring a couple of years ago with R. Kelly and the Lillith Fair, I would do the late night underground gigs as well because it’s always around those times that there was a hot song, either on the radio or in the clubs, it would just be simultaneous.
Grace Kelly is my main inspiration, for her timeless beauty. I like Jennifer Lawrence for her fun, down-to-earth style, and Taylor Swift is always elegant.
I want to be a morning-talk-show host. I love Kelly Ripa’s job. She gets to live in New York and has this amazing job hosting a talk show.
R. Kelly is one of the pioneers that I grew up listening to. If he’s classified as an R&B artist, then I want to be like that. I don’t want to have limits either.
I’m a huge fan of R. Kelly’s. He’s a musical genius and probably the most prolific artist of the generation before mine.
I did a show with Tori Kelly, and it was really cool that I got to meet her. She has always been a huge inspiration of mine, and I’m obsessed with her voice, so it was great to get to talk to her about the industry. The best advice she gave me was to just be myself.
It’s a thrill to star with such great actors like Kevin Bacon, Kelly Preston, and Garrett Hedlund.
‘The Unsinkable Molly Brown’ was my favorite for me to be in because it was all dancing. There were other musicals that I made with Donald O’Connor and Gene Kelly that were wonderful pictures, and we had a lot of fun making them.
When I was a kid, I loved Nicholas brothers films. It was like skateboarding. Even Gene Kelly: I always preferred him to Fred Astaire, just because he was more athletic, like skateboarding.
I wanted to look like Kelly McGillis in ‘Top Gun.’
To me, Stephen Miller is like Iago whispering in the president’s ear, along with John Kelly. These people are totally anti-immigrant.
When I started trying to produce records for other people, one of the first tracks I wrote and produced was sort of a ‘Kelly Clarkson circa 2008,’ kind of big-brassy, guitar-pop, rock song. I was like, ‘I can do this. I can make pop songs.’ It was bad.
I grew up on Jodeci and R. Kelly.
A white nationalist would claim that flying the confederate flag on a state building is an expression of cultural history, rather than racial sentiment. A white nationalist would claim, as the television host Megyn Kelly once did on Fox News, that Jesus was white, and, by implication, God, too.
What’s important is that people realize that I can’t be put into a box musically. I’ve studied all forms of music; I know probably more Jay-Z songs than the biggest Jay-Z fan. I’ve studied R. Kelly to the Isley Brothers to Stevie Wonder to Sting and Sade. You don’t have one personality every day. You don’t have one mood.
Astaire never thought of what he was doing as balletic, but Kelly was always trying to dance with women on points. And his choreography is so showy and flashy. He always looks self-satisfied to me.
I’ve always had an innate ability to dance, but I’m not as spiffy as those cinema legends like Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire.
My absolute earliest influences would be people like Michael Jackson, R. Kelly, Outkast, ‘Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ era 50 cent.
I love Grace Kelly. She can do no wrong.
When I was in the GB Women’s football team at the 2012 Olympics, it was obvious who was in the first XI and who was making up the numbers. Kelly Smith was going to be first-choice striker no matter what, and the other forwards in the squad mentally checked out as a result.
As long as I’ve been at Clemson, there’s not a guy that’s more committed to Clemson than Kelly Bryant. There’s not a better leader. This guy, he’s the epitome of what you want. He’s what you want your son to be like. I love him like a son.
I’m just steadily building myself up as Kelly Rowland, not just Kelly Rowland of Destiny’s Child, which is a blessing to be able to do that.
Without being disrespectful to Jimmy Kelly, I’d rather fight Shane Mosley than Jimmy Kelly.
I watched Gene Kelly for his smile, for his energy. Vittorio Gassman for his movement. Clark Gable for his mustache. And I watched Lassie who was happy as a dog.
I love any books by Kelly Sue DeConnick or Marjorie M. Liu; it’s lovely to have successful, talented female writers doing great work in comics.
I guess I feel like it’s a gift to meet those talented artists like George Lucas and Oliver Stone, Spike Lee and Richard Kelly. Even if it’s a small role, it’s a gift to be working that closely with them.
What we know is Megyn Kelly is totally obsessed with Mr. Trump.
