The 20th century taught us how far unbridled evil can and will go when the world fails to confront it. It is time that we heed the lessons of the 20th century and stand up to these murderers. It is time that we end genocide in the 21st century.
We buy a copy of ‘Gravity’s Rainbow,’ say, and we carry our copy home. We open it; we fall into it. And it is here that the word ‘copy’ fails. Because what I experience when I read ‘Gravity’s Rainbow,’ or ‘Beloved,’ or ‘The Moviegoer,’ is not at all a ‘copy’ of what you experience when you read the same novel.
I played on teams with 24 guys pulling the rope one way and one guy pulling the other. I’ve seen how destructive it can be. I tell them, ‘If 13 of you are insanely successful and one fails, we all lose.’
