As we know, all sports evolve tremendously, and our sport is no different. It’s really not the same thing at all as it was in 1972. It’s a different type of horse we’re using. The style of riding is quite evolved, the way the courses are built, the materials used… it’s virtually unrecognizable.
The way I pack is I look at how long I’ll be gone and I pack day for day. If I’m going on a three-day fishing trip, I plot each day. I put most of that in a little bag. If I’m going from there to work on golf courses for a few days, I plot that trip.
I was fortunate that Yale has a very open and creative law school. I took many courses outside the law school, and every semester, the students had a literature reading group. I was asked to lead one on ‘Dante and the Concept of Justice,’ and it was around that time that I began writing the novel.
To go back and read Swift and Defoe and Samuel Johnson and Smollett and Pope – all those people we had to read in college English courses – to read them now is to have one of the infinite pleasures in life.
Whatever I am today is mostly because of my training at FTII. It taught me to be disciplined as an actor. People accuse us of being lazy and presume that we smoke up and laze about in the campus, which is not true at all. FTII courses are hard work.
I guess you could say I was kind of a nerd in high school, so I was in the upper division math courses – I embrace my inner nerd.
If my son had a baseless accusation made against him at a university, and it was making his life there miserable, I would suggest he transfer or take courses online.
All of the courses that run through real streets are very demanding. There is no room for error, no shoulders to lean on. If you go off the road, you’re into somebody’s shop-window or front porch.
Unfortunately, the elimination of incentives such as parole, good time credits and funding for college courses, means that fewer inmates participate in and excel in literacy, education, treatment and other development programs.
We need to drive down requirements for the schools. In the 19th century, we increased the quality of the schools by higher education saying, ‘You can’t come in unless you have these skills, unless you’ve taken these courses.’ We did that in Wisconsin when I was there, it helped to transform the secondary school system.
It takes having your golf peak four different times throughout the year. You have to like all four golf courses. You’ve got to be the best of that week for the four weeks.

No state income tax, no snow, lots of golf courses, and ready-made gated communities make Florida an irresistible place for seniors – the ones who have the income level – to retire.
And then, when I went into the Navy, there was no choice. You took about half of the hours during your naval training as naval courses and the other half were engineering.
It’s a different style of golf; that stands out for sure when you come over to America. The style of play and the golf courses in America. Most golf courses in America either stretch your game, and test different elements of your game and the margins for error are smaller.
Every kid goes to school full of questions about meaning. You know, ‘What’s my place in the universe? What does it mean to be a human being? What are human beings?’ Existing courses cannot help you answer those questions. They can’t even help you ask them.
I think obstacle courses in general are a blast, and I love the Green Beret one; I’ve done it – I don’t know – 20, 30, 40 times. I’m always trying to break my time from the last one or use a new technique to get through a certain obstacle.
Some of the beauty of a university is that every professor is given a lot of autonomy over what he or she does. That’s also what makes it very hard for even a very forward-thinking president to change courses.
I was a mathematician by nature, and still am – I just knew I didn’t want to be a mathematician. So I decided not to take any mathematics courses.

The first time I ever heard Airborne Toxic Event, my friend was turning 11 or something. And he had a paintball birthday party where him and me and two of our other friends went out to these paintball courses and I got obliterated. I don’t think I got one hit.
I started doing sculpture rather than painting. I was halfway through my degree, and I hadn’t really done any introduction courses in sculpture… I’d missed all the technical stuff. I didn’t really know how to weld or forge or carve or model. I’d sort of evaded all those technique classes, so I had no technique.
When I come home from training, my attention immediately has to focus on my school courses, which helps keep the stress level balanced. I mostly balance both by drinking a lot of coffee and making sure I time manage well, which doesn’t happen all the time, especially during finals week.
I suggest that the introductory courses in science, at all levels from grade school through college, be radically revised. Leave the fundamentals, the so-called basics, aside for a while, and concentrate the attention of all students on the things that are not known.
There’s always a miasma of misinformation emerging from the higher education sector as to which are the ‘best’ courses to take. My advice would always be to ignore the perceived wisdom and look for the most reliable evidence on the ground.
Forty percent of the United States drains into the Mississippi. It’s agriculture. It’s golf courses. It’s domestic runoff from our lawns and roads. Ultimately, where does it go? Downstream into the gulf.
Phoenix is an interesting example. Drive around and see the golf courses everywhere, and you see people’s big green lawns. And you live in a desert! I’ve always remarked about the capacity of human beings to look at somewhere and move there because of its uniqueness and its beauty and then change it.
The inspiring thing is that people are often more experimental with their desserts than other courses. It allows me to be more creative and excite people.
