I’ve always employed a melodic style with my leads, placing strong emphasis on infusing romantic sensibilities into what I’m trying to say. Those big, epic melodies come from influences like Pink Floyd, Journey, Marillion… bands that have these guitar parts that are just soaring!
I did psychology at university, but I wouldn’t say that my music is too influenced by it. The way I make music is a little more to do with an emotional connection. When I compose the melodies for my tracks, it always comes from the heart.
I think my melodies are superior to my lyrics.
With ‘The Xpose,’ the main challenge was to create timeless melodies. The thriller is set in the ’60s, and we didn’t want the songs to sound dated.
Ilaignan,’ the script of which has been penned by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, is a period film that is set in the romantic era of classical music. You will find Western classical music mixed with our Indian melodies.
It’s hard – some people get inspired by a feeling, but I’m mostly inspired by melodies.
I’m into song-writing; I’m into melodies that break your heart a little bit. That’s the thing that got me into music; that’s what I look for in music for the most part.
What makes something pop? It’s really just the bed it’s placed in. If I grab melodies by Black Sabbath or Metallica and take them out of their musical bed and put them into a pop context, it’s not like they wouldn’t translate.
What’s the essence of the Go-Go’s? Great melodies, guitar hooks, driving drums. All of that.
Miley Cyrus’ ‘Party in the USA’ kills me with jealousy. The melodies are out-of-control beautiful.
I’m glad I’ve been offered songs from various genres, but I love singing melodies the most.
I was always going out to joints in Jersey that played country music. I was always around it. I liked the lyrics, the simple melodies, the soulful-ness.
My creative process is quite slow. I hear melodies in my head while I’m washing the dishes and I allow my subconscious to do the work.
I really like melodies.
You know, many people do not know that I am so immersed when it comes to music. I have such a huge knowledge of music. I like my songs, I like my melodies, my harmonies, you know.
I knew I had a sharper mind than most others and I had a sense of rhyme. One didn’t even need to sing melodies. It felt like the perfect way to make my way out of the gutter.
Plantation gospel music was the stuff I fell in love with when I was a kid – these beautiful melodies and these hard, hard stories.
Singing in Spanish is much more honest, much closer to my roots. For me, Spanish is essential. I still think in Spanish, dream in Spanish. It’s the melodies and arrangements that transmit meaning.
As soon as I started writing the first batch, I had a vision. I saw me on stage playing a certain type of music. I want to take these blues melodies over aggressive guitars. I heard the sound I wanted to make. I knew what I wanted to do. It wasn’t ever there before.
Every time I sit down in front of my piano, I like to improvise with the instrument. It depends on my mood of that day what kind of melodies and rhythms I am playing around. Sometimes, even before starting to play I already have a quite clear picture of a song I would like to compose, or at least the sound of it.
I didn’t start writing music until I was a sophomore in college. I would steal my roommate’s guitar and sit on the front porch and kind of blend this weird spoken word and these little melodies over simple chords; that really started my whole journey as a musician.
The ’60s was a magical time in the music business. So much creativity and talent. I think a lot of it came from the fact that we had grown up before rock n’ roll. We listened to all the great songwriters and big bands, songs with great lyrics and melodies. I think that really influenced everybody.
I’ve always argued that all Tame Impala melodies are pure pop. It’s just that ‘Lonerism,’ for example, is a completely rumbling, fuzzed out psychedelic rock album. But for me, it was just pop music produced the way that I like to produce it.
Singing beautiful melodies is one thing, but to deliver the text so that the people understand it, even in a foreign language, has to be worked at very hard.
The one area where I’ll say that Hendrix is underrated was his ability to use chord melodies. He used different inversions of chords and was able to make a three-piece band sound absolutely huge. From the moment Hendrix and the Experience came on the scene, power trios had their work cut out for them.
Depth on different levels is so important to me. You look at a band like The Beatles, all their material has so much depth to it. And I want people to be able to run away with my melodies and get lost in them and take the lyrics and be able to relate to them.
Ever since I can remember, I hated silence. I wanted it filled with guitars and melodies to sing all day.
The only way I’m not going to follow other people in reggaeton is if I listen to other things. I get other melodies or sounds and put them in reggaeton and make it different.
I was washing dishes at Del Frisco’s Grille and busing tables at a Tex-Mex place and writing songs the whole time. I did a lot of my writing at those jobs, thinking up melodies in my head.
Sometimes, after I finish the lyrics and have all the melodies and harmonies and the pop and vocal, I’ll be like, ‘I have to keep it. I love it too much.’

I think with me and the type of music that I’m trying to make, it’s always going be soulful because I grew up listening to different types and variations of soulful melodies and jazz, but experimenting with different types of stylistic souls.
I always start with writing vocal melodies before writing lyrics.
I started classical and operatic lessons when I was 8 and become an operatic singer and went to competition. I write my own music. A lot of the songs, growing up, I was into writing dark stories and poems, and one day I started putting melodies to them.

Everyone can write their melodies and chords and pianos and guitars, but what hasn’t been discovered yet are tones and textures, and that’s very exciting. Probably the No. 1 most important thing in my music is not to sound like anyone else.
On its fifth full-length album, ‘Cervantine,’ A Hawk and a Hacksaw’s love of the Balkans continues unabated, but with new songs and collaborators. In ‘Uskudar,’ the music finds an equal balance of sweet, sour and earthy sounds with nimble string melodies and a grunting tuba.

You know what, I am not gonna lie, that Taylor Swift ‘Trouble’ song? I can’t resist that song. Her melodies are very catchy.
