I have nothing but admiration for the actors on soap operas. It is unbelievably challenging to put out an hour show in one day.
I can’t imagine soaps will ever stop, because people will always watch as long as they have great stories and characters. But the soaps will have to keep evolving, won’t they?
I take off my makeup with Ponds cold cream, and then I wash myself with gentle soap and water, and that’s it.
All the women in ‘Coronation Street’ and ‘Brookside,’ they are all so funny. A lot of women bore me, but I love the strong women in soaps.
Even though shows like NYPD Blue are soaps in my opinion, but they’re individualized to an extent that you can still follow what’s going on if you miss a week.

I love soap operas – the stories, the plots! And I love the game shows and the courtroom dramas and the detectives – Jessica Fletcher, ‘Columbo,’ ‘Perry Mason,’ ‘L.A. Law.’ Any sense of guilt appeals to me in a television program – a sense of guilt, or a sense of making a lot of money.
Surfactants allow us to protect a water surface and to generate these beautiful soap bubbles, which are the delight of our children.
It used to take us six days to film an hour of ‘Gunsmoke.’ But I didn’t mind the fast pace of soap opera work. It was nice being able to shoot scenes in sequence. We couldn’t do that on ‘Gunsmoke.’
I don’t run a non-profit. There are lots of non-profits in America – in Detroit, parts of Wall Street, etc. I run a not for profit. We’re a business. The only difference is that instead of selling soap or sneakers, we sell hope and leadership.
I love doing the nighttime soap, the emotional, psychological, hard stuff that I got to tackle on ‘Hannibal.’
