Never give up, which is the lesson I learned from boxing. As soon as you learn to never give up, you have to learn the power and wisdom of unconditional surrender, and that one doesn’t cancel out the other; they just exist as contradictions. The wisdom of it comes as you get older.
In the rainy season, sometimes to get to the first lesson we had to run really quick, because we had to cross the river to school and we’d have to go up and down the bank to find a place to cross because there is no bridge.
I like the idea of teaching kids how to lose. That’s a really important lesson in life. I don’t like the idea of doing leadline where everyone gets a blue ribbon. I think it’s unrealistic for kids and teaches the wrong lesson.
That was my first lesson from Ben-Gurion. Then I saw him making peace, and I saw him making war. He mobilized me before the war. The man was a very rare combination between a real intellectual and a born leader. There is a contradiction between the two.
In Chinese culture, it wouldn’t occur to kids to question or talk back to their parents. In American culture, kids in books, TV shows and movies constantly score points with their snappy back talk. Typically, it’s the parents who need to be taught a life lesson – by their children.
They look so expectant, and then they look so depressed… that was the other great lesson that The Royal Hunt of the Sun taught me, it was the profundity that masked drama can achieve, that of course, the audience were not seeing masks moving at all.
I think the lesson is that when you give black voices a platform and the opportunity to tell our story, we will tell good stories just like anybody else.
With a lot of my comedic heroes, I’m trying to make sure that, wherever they might have gotten off-track a bit, I’ve learned that lesson.
The ultimate lesson all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others but ourselves as well.
I learned through the ‘Jack Nicklaus Lesson Tee,’ the cartoon. Back then, it was 1970 or ’69 when it came out. Learned the grip that way and everything in the cartoon… So that’s kind of how it all started for me.
A good lesson in keeping your perspective is: Take your job seriously but don’t take yourself seriously.
I think the big lesson I’ve learned is that it’s very hard to write satire in America because almost immediately, whatever you’ve thought of turns out to come true, or sometimes it already was true.
My grandfather and my uncle took me to the gym. I was kinda wild; they thought that boxing would teach me a lesson, but I don’t think in their wildest dreams they could imagine the success I would have.
Every lesson is a blessing!
Suffering is a corrective to point out a lesson which by other means we have failed to grasp, and never can it be eradicated until that lesson is learnt.
My mother never made me do anything for my brothers, like serve them. I think that’s an important lesson, especially for the Latino culture, because the women are expected to be the ones that serve and cook and whatever. Not in our family. Everybody was equal.
Feminists bore me to death. I follow my instinct and if that supports young girls in any way, great. But I’d rather they saw it more as a lesson about following their own instincts rather than imitating somebody.
If anything like #MeToo happens, women can come to MNS. We will teach a lesson to accused. Women must raise the voice when they face oppression, not after 10 years.
I can’t speak for anybody else but myself ’cause I usually get in trouble when I speak for other people, so I’ve learned my lesson not to do that, but for me, I’ve been known to pace for quite a while when I walk onstage, and that’s just because I’m becoming one with my shell.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned about drawing is that it takes time. Which is really annoying.
My greatest life lesson has been that life can change in a second. This is why it’s important to always live your best possible life and to do what you can for others.
Infrastructure alone won’t end poverty. The World Bank had to learn this lesson, too. While we believed too much in bricks and mortar in our early days, we now understand that bringing together funding, technical expertise, and tested knowledge goes much further.
A consumer-finance agency is a good thing, but it would do well to teach consumers a simple lesson: if you don’t understand the deal you’re making, don’t make it.
My mother took me to Venice one time and showed me all the houses where famous composers used to live. It gave me a fascination for music and the city, but also for architecture. It was a valuable lesson.
When I was a teenager, the biggest heartthrob was Tab Hunter. He was in every movie out of Warner Bros. until he was exposed as gay, and his career faded. That was an object lesson. I knew I must protect my sexual orientation.
As much as I loved the model of St. Francis, I realized that I couldn’t afford to be poor, because unlike St. Francis, I’m not celibate. I was enlightened that God’s call to me was not poverty but generosity and simplicity. And I had to go back to the lesson I learned from my parents: that is, simplicity.
I took a private lesson, but it didn’t really work out, so I went back to playing along with records. That’s really the thing that got me into playing a lot – getting excited about playing along with my favorite bands like Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.
A life lesson for me is, how do you muster the courage to take on a new risk? Whether it’s starting up a business or taking on a new project or expedition. I think the risks that we take are all relative to the risk-taker.
So one important lesson of Vietnam is, the first casualty of an unwise and unjust war are the American troops called on to fight it. Their service should be honored.
The lesson is that my support for American policy counts for nothing.
But the ultimate lesson is just sit down and write. That’s all.
I hope the example of Saddam Hussein will give a lesson to leaders of other countries where human rights are not respected.
Modeling gave me so many experiences, like traveling and being exposed to global cultures, but the most valuable lesson has been working with designers who truly are visionaries in their field.
I think the biggest lesson that I take from ‘Avatar’ on any set that I go to is just work ethic. Working with Jim Cameron, you’re used to working very, very long days and you’re very meticulous about details. He’s very, very picky about little details, little character-isms and things.
And what we did with this new company in 1985 is we did start focusing on PCs instead of video game machines, because we learned the hard lesson about bringing a product to market in a consumer world where it’s very expensive to build a brand and get distribution and so forth.
For almost 20 years, I’ve reported on some amazing feats of athleticism for ESPN. But the one thing that stood out, game after game, is that it takes a team to win. When I got cancer, that lesson got personal. And Team Livestrong became my team.
I learned a great lesson from my mother on her deathbed. She counseled me on the importance of taking care of myself so I wouldn’t end up in an unhealthy body like she did.
Those who believe that health is a commodity, on par with cars or computers, fail to grasp the basic economic lesson that health is very vulnerable to exposure to the markets, not least due to the profound asymmetries in power between the providers and consumers.
Both of my sons used to coach high school football. When they started, I’d say things I shouldn’t have. So I learned my lesson.
You know that you’ve healed an issue when you can talk about it and you’re not weeping, when you can speak to it and identify the lesson. You know that you’ve healed an issue when, having gone through that, has a benefit that you live today.
While a lot of management development books try to teach you a lesson or give you a scenario of what corporate culture and work practices are about, they’re theoretical and written in a sermonizing way. Most people don’t get past the first chapter, and they just look nice on the bookshelf.
After Lockerbie, everyone thought, now we’ve learned the lesson of how to be proactive instead of being reactive. Unfortunately, September 11 came and we know the result. Thousands of people lost their lives. Security totally failed, not at one airport, at three different airports around the country.
That feeds anger, and I mean when we went and at last thank heavens got towards peace in Northern Ireland we went for justice within Northern Ireland as well as using security well, as well as a political settlement, but surely that is the lesson.
The single biggest lesson I learned was when a hire isn’t working out fire them fast. My biggest mistakes, and where I’ve seen the worst results, were when I gave someone too many chances, or let a situation drift on for too long because I couldn’t bring myself to terminate it.
Student life taught me a lesson – never bow down your head. Be straightforward and bold in whatever you do.
The most powerful lesson I learnt was to have faith in humanity.
Once there was a boy so meek and modest, he was awarded a Most Humble badge. The next day, it was taken away because he wore it. Here endeth the lesson.
Relationships are eternal. The ‘separation’ is another chapter in the relationship. Often, letting go of the old form of the relationship becomes a lesson in pure love much deeper than any would have learned had the couple stayed together.
