For athletes, it is unhealthy to be one-sport focused, especially at a young age. I believe in exposing kids to lots of activities – there are great advantages to being a well-rounded athlete and human, no matter the field of play.
I think the healthier Bellator can be, the better it is for the entire sport, especially the athletes who – let’s face it – need to be paid more. They need the opportunity to negotiate and have an option. Bellator definitely presents that.

Today, people idolize athletes and celebrities – and yes, highly successful and visionary business people like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, but not the innovators who perhaps have not seen such high-flying levels of success. I mean, I watched Ken train in the gym. Ken was one of the greatest athletes I’ve ever seen. But when he got into a fight, it would be half of him. He was wrestling with a lot more in there than just beating his opponent.
We might have, with Hockey Canada, an Aero Bar, a chocolate bar. ‘Okay we’re going to play for this chocolate bar.’ Here you have guys who made millions of dollars, they’re professional athletes, and they will fight tooth and nail to win. For athletes, the Olympics are the ultimate test of their worth.

In general, I enjoy athletes who have a strong character who let their abilities speak for themselves.
Some athletes can change, because it’s not easy when you became famous too fast. The money, the pictures, the fans following you everywhere you can have everything you want. There are different temptations every time, but you have to be calm with your focus and your work.
As professional athletes, we live such a privileged life. We make tons of money, everything goes our way and we play a game for a living. It’s hard to stay grounded at times.
I don’t need to scare the other athletes. When I’m running, I will scare them.
Sixteen games, to me, is a long enough schedule for anybody. We’re already concerning ourselves with head injuries and bodily harm to all of the professional athletes. Add to extra games to it, (and) you are just increasing those risks.
In our world, we have this huge focus on vicarious living – politicians, movie stars, athletes, coaches, all these people. What our research has shown very clearly is that people who are really happier and have more meaningful lives are people that focus on living their own lives.
When I began running at the age of 10, I didn’t have the diet athletes need. It was just rice and vegetables. Every day.

We’re focusing on producing top, great athletes for the Olympics.
Being at school, being who I am, being an athlete, it was hard to find people like me. There’s not many athletes that can be at my level. That was kind of hard finding people who love something so much they want to keep on doing it.
If athletes went to the races more and to the backside in the morning, I think more people would get involved because, as an athlete, we can relate to what the horses go through. Training routine, injuries, massages, etc.
I love watching a good horse do what he’s bred to do – I guess that’s what I like the most about it. And I love to see good athletes do what they’re bred to do.

In the fun house of today’s metastisizing sports-entertainment megaplex, when every day brings another story revealing how these ‘heroes’ we create are fashioned from base clay, a pause might be in order to reflect on athletes who actually embodied the qualities we think we admire in the too-easily deified.
The athletes are still out competing the same as a Division I team, and I think we’ve done a good job of creating an atmosphere where they’re responsible for their actions and their play.
Unfortunately the world is what it is now. People don’t get along for whatever reason. As professional athletes, in a way we’re almost ambassadors for peace, because sports brings everyone together.

With athletes, it’s never fully understood the level to which we push ourselves. Especially in an endurance sport.
I’m truly excited to be a part of the Reebok family. What really comes through when working with Reebok team is that they live and breathe fitness. They have an incredible heritage in training and know exactly what it takes to help athletes be as fit as they can be.
I must learn to adapt, or else I’ll fall victim to the negative statistics surrounding retired athletes.

I think exercise tests us in so many ways, our skills, our hearts, our ability to bounce back after setbacks. This is the inner beauty of sports and competition, and it can serve us all well as adult athletes.
Athletes as role models and heroes is a hoax, a sick hoax. The men and women who are fighting in Iraq, they are the true heroes.
I moved to Los Angeles, and ‘The Office’ became successful, and the charity/cocktail party circuit is really not my scene. But I played golf, and I started getting invited to charity golf events, and I just fell in love with the game ten-fold, and at a lot of these events, there were athletes.

Growing up in Chicago, I was a theater nerd. That might be very cool on the East Coast, but in Chicago, it’s really the athletes that come in No. 1 on the cool scale. Maybe musicians after that. Community theater? That’s way down the list, my friend.
In my background in sports, I am huge believer in statistics and I think that’s one area where in wrestling we’ve seen some cool stuff get over. To me, I think there’s real opportunities to do some interesting things just in terms of building up athletes the way UFC has as legitimate competition.
After I won in Beijing I chatted with a lot of Indian athletes and they were interested and keen to know what I did. They all thought that I had some sort of secret for success, but I just wanted them to understand and realize that the biggest secret is: there is no secret.
You’d like more people to recognise what you do is special. But I take the attitude that the best thing I can do for my sport is to be the best at it. The best way people will come to recognise that track and field is a great sport is to see athletes excelling at it.
As athletes, you always know that mistakes happen, and not everyone is perfect, and you can’t be perfect.

So many athletes who have been close to me have been everything to me.
Sports in Indonesia aren’t being supported by the government. The rewards you get as a young player don’t match the effort you put in. I want to be different from other athletes, if not better, and I want to make something good out of my profile and help the younger players have opportunities.
It’s empowering and uplifting to hear the Special Olympics athletes share their journey and what’s helped them to get to where they are today. I had no idea how much I’d learn and grow by taking part in Special Olympics. It’s made me think about my own journey and what’s important in life.
As athletes, it’s our responsibility to help. It’s easy for us to go out and affect people’s lives in so many different ways. We don’t even know how much we can touch people and change the direction of somebody’s future.
As athletes, most of the time we deal with fans cussing at us, saying how much we suck.
I think athletes in general are actors. We perform in front of big crowds. People pay to come see you play. So, people come see you to basically act.
Some athletes take what we have for granted. They kind of feel, ‘I’m here, and I earned this, so people who are not on this level should just give me what I want and move out the way.’
I am very proud of my mom and consider her the most courageous woman I know. With perseverance, sacrifice and hard work, she raised a family of Olympic athletes and gave us the tools and the spirit to succeed. That is something that my brothers and I will always be thankful for.
The self-image of many contemporary sportswriters seems to depend on maintaining that were it not for sports, athletes would be pumping gas, if they were not sticking up the gas station.
It happens too frequently that after a couple of poor performances, athletes are dumped. That’s unfair as Olympic glory is a long path.
It’s so uncommon for athletes to push themselves the way they do and not have injuries as a result.

You need to go near to the people and actually sensitize them about the sport – specifically running. If athletes can go near their fans, many people would develop a love for running.
It’s not just professional athletes and soldiers who are at risk from traumatic brain injury. More than 1.7 million people a year sustain a traumatic brain injury, and about 50,000 of them die each year, according the Centers for Disease Control. There are both emotional and financial costs from these injuries.
I want to express my deepest apology to the athletes, the people of Salt Lake City in Utah and the millions of citizens worldwide who love and respect the games.

I have met a lot of athletes who were on the top of their sport, and then sat around and did nothing. They just didn’t know what to do.

It should be easier for athletes to be students.
It’s important that athletes can compete on a level playing field. And youngsters coming into the sport can know that if they are working hard and training hard, they’ll see a true reflection of where they stand and what they can achieve worldwide and not be swayed by people who are cheating.
It is so important that our federation stands by our athletes.
As a coach, I am committed to not only developing well-rounded athletes but also good human beings.
I think, as athletes, we’ve been given a platform, and we can use it in a lot of different ways. We can use it for negative. We can use it for positive. We can be indifferent. But if you’ve been given a platform, I think God is pleased when you share… His truth in love.
I was a hockey player. I played hockey forever. That was my life and my job until I got injured, so I get sports, and I get the sports atmosphere, the feeling around other athletes, but I never played football.
I fight for everybody, national and international, no matter where they are. I want to help those athletes. Not only those in the UFC – those that are in the big league and can have a better future – but those in the small promotions and need our help.
I want people to realize bodybuilders are athletes. We have a very meticulous philosophy on how we are able to gain muscle and lose fat simultaneously.
It was the Michael Jordan/Nike phenomenon that really let people see that athletes were OK, and black athletes were OK. Defying a previous wisdom – not only that black athletes wouldn’t sell in white America, but that the NBA as a predominantly black sport could not sell in white America.
I’m pretty proud of having completed a marathon myself, so I can only imagine the pride that real athletes feel when they are picked for the Olympic or the Paralympic Games.
Great athletes last because they let the mental do all the work. What we do as hoofers is not so much a physical strain as everybody thinks. It’s more of a mental stretch.
Athletes have all the influence in the world. Everyone wants to hear what you have to say.
I feel like athletes lean into this indestructible character. But unless you’re doing something really shady, no one nails every day of their life. You’re always going to have rough patches.
When you surround yourself with like-minded athletes who are all going through the same thing as you, it gives you more drive and strength to get through those moments when you don’t want to do it any more, when you think it’s hard.
A lot of athletes have star quality, but they just can’t perform in front of a camera. So no matter how good-looking you are, no matter what kind of presence you have, you still have to be able to be a convincing performer to become a star.
I have a hard time believing athletes are overpriced. If an owner is losing money, give it up. It’s a business. I have trouble figuring out why owners would stay in if they’re losing money.
I like Barack Obama as a person. He’s articulate, he knows sports, his brother-in-law’s a coach. He always has the athletes to the White House. But I don’t know about some of his policies and some of these people in Congress.
Celebrities may get all the attention in the glossies, but when athletes set an example, their words are far-reaching – deep into the inner cities, across Mid-western farmlands, up and down coasts.

Even though MMA and pro wrestling are very different, at the end of the day, it’s all about entertaining. They are amazing athletes who go out there and give 100 percent.
When I first left Nike to go work with LeBron and manage him, I was really bullish about managing other athletes. I really wanted to get more athletes besides LeBron and build this big management practice. And in hindsight that was a mistake.
We want to make sure our athletes have a future once their athletics careers are over.

Soccer is Europe’s biggest sport and the world’s biggest sport, so as we look to go into Europe, soccer is the way to do it because of the sport’s size and scale, as well as its athletes who know and understand our brand.
A lot of kids my age can make a lot of mistakes, but college athletes that are in the spotlight, you have to grow up so much faster than regular students or regular kids your age because you are a public figure, so you get one shot, sometimes two.
Actors are, in a sense, like athletes. They’ve got to stretch once in a while.
My concentration level blocks out everything. Concentration is why some athletes are better than others. You develop that concentration in training and concentrate in a meet.
I do not think athletes should get a free pass. I don’t think we should train our children and future athletes to believe that they are above the law and morality.
As athletes, we sit and think, when international media or whoever make judgments or statements about Jamaica, ‘Why aren’t members of our federation coming out and speaking up for us?’
People outside the organization or outside of football, they don’t know how hard it is to win in this league, such a high-caliber athletes and elite group of people competing each week.
I’m an athlete and I’m black, and a lot of black athletes go broke. I do not want to become a statistic, so maybe I overcompensate. But I’m paranoid. Oprah told me a long time ago, ‘You sign every check. Never let anyone sign any checks.’
As a company, I’m proud that Nike takes a stand on issues that impact all of us, our athletes, and society as a whole. And I am proud that Nike stands against discrimination in any form. We stand against bigotry. We stand for racial justice. We firmly believe the world can improve.
One of sports journalism’s great ironies is that covering an Olympics can be wildly unhealthy. NBC shows athletes in peak health performing on the ice and snow, but not the haggard reporters subsisting for three weeks on stadium starches, cheap beer, deadlines, and little sleep.
I have lots of athletes in my family and they showed me how to waterski – slalom, barefoot – all that stuff.

Athletes like Milkha Singh, Sriram Singh, T.C. Yohannan and I set our records at international meets under stringent conditions, against the stiffest competition.
People get confused with athletes, especially ultimate competitors. They think they are the same on and off the field. Once you see me on the field, I am a different person. I have a switch I can flip on and off.
I believe the biggest challenge is just getting the courage to try something different or new. Try to forget the stereotype in your mind. Yoga is for everyone – children, athletes, moms, dads, accountants, truck drivers, even country stars.
For professional athletes, I always think about it in these terms: the most difficult diva of women’s soccer would be the easiest NBA player ever.
When I look at the great athletes, I think of the Kobes and the LeBrons and the Tom Bradys of the world, obviously they take rests and recover, but they also continue to work, too. Working out and keeping up with that, with your conditioning, is another part of health and keeping your longevity throughout the years.
I’ve witnessed thousands of superior athletes try to becomes hitters and fail at it.
I think it’s tough that we build Michael Vick up, and then we break him down. I think he’s one of the superb athletes, and he’s a good human being.
Truth is, none of us professional athletes are ever 100 percent healthy. We just decide what we’re going to tape up and push through without making it worse.
I’ll do whatever I need to do to bring more athletes to the sport.

Some athletes aren’t small, they’re just short.
It is essential that we put an end to steroid abuse and set a better example for aspiring young athletes to follow, so that some day, when they make it in the All Star Game, it will be because of their own natural talents, and not because of a performance enhancing product.
Yea, I wrote my college thesis on why college athletes should get paid. I think there’s a way to do it based on the amount of revenue they generate.
In the age of millennials, women’s rights, and female empowerment, I hope my voice helps to encourage the next generation of great female athletes and golfers to possibly stop social injustices and prejudices from creeping into the game that I fell in love with at such a young age.
All you’ve ever seen in the UFC was the greatest athletes in the world. Never, ever did we do a freakshow and we won’t.
A lot of athletes go from not making any money at all to make any large pot of money. Then they get approached by an agent who takes a percentage. Then they get approached by your financial advisor who starts investing your money without you even understanding what he’s doing.
There’s no private side to acting, which some people find hard. I’ve drawn inspiration from athletes. They manage to be themselves under the pressure of public scrutiny, and they have it much harder – they have to perform with people yelling at them.
I think that the potential of Total Divas and female athletes is that the sky is the limit. People want to know about these women, and in the WWE, we call it the Divas Revolution – it’s a movement for women’s empowerment.
We’re professional athletes, and we have moments where we step back, and we have to think and assess everything in life.
Becoming a coach has to be in your blood. There are hundreds and thousands of former athletes out there, but there are maybe only 10 people who want to dedicate their lives by taking on a job as a coach. Not only a master, a coach should also be a brother or sister to his apprentices.
Athletes vs Cancer is a foundation that I started in 2008 after I lost my mom to cancer in 2007, and our goal is early detection, preventative screening and just really spreading knowledge about the cancer disease.
Considering retirement is like skirting with the reality of what’s to come, and I think that’s why so many athletes decide to do more introspection at that point.

I applaud the professional athletes using their platform to voice their opinions.
I’m not a union guy in the sense that I know a lot about how they operate. But I know fighters. They are individual athletes. This is not a team sport. I think it’s going to be hard to say, ‘Hey, do you mind not fighting on Saturday and walking around the arena with a picket sign instead?’ I just don’t see it.
In terms of trying to inspire other people with faith to play and stuff I am very proud of that. I remember seeing Muslim athletes or guys with other faiths performing and still carrying the label of being a religious person and it does inspire people.
The problem with these UFC fighters – and they’re all fantastic athletes, top of the line in the entire world – is that they wear their bodies down in these training camps. All these guys that are cutting weight are just destroying their own bodies.

People want athletes to cater to their image of what an athlete should be, but they also want them to fail so they can feel like their screwups are all right. If I make a priority shift, I’ll make it because it’s best for me.

The street to obscurity is paved with athletes who can perform great feats before friendly crowds.
Sometimes women get devastated by failing. Athletes don’t; they just know that means they’ve got to practise harder, and they’ve got to do something else differently.
Much in the way Olympic athletes optimize their game by paying an enormous – borderline maniacal – amount of attention to things like diet, exercise, sleep, and of course the essential R&R, we all would do well to pay more attention to those key aspects of our lives that comprise our overall health equation.
I meet athletes from different backgrounds and see they share the same mentality and process as other athletes in other sports.
Everyone in Norman knew our block. There were five kids in our neighborhood who started at QB in high school. We had Division-I athletes from a number of sports available to play at any moment.
The mind is absolutely instrumental in achieving results, even for athletes. Sports psychology is a very small part, but it’s extremely important when you’re winning and losing races by hundredths and even thousandths of a second.
I’m a big believer in the student-athlete part. I value the education and what it provides for you. Football is a vocation. Only 1.67 percent of these athletes go on to the NFL. An education provides you an opportunity for a career. A lot of people just don’t get that. To say they aren’t getting anything is misinformed.
The decathlon takes so long to learn that people who are good athletes don’t want to go back to the beginning again.
Incorporating science, technology, engineering, analytics and medicine to athletes’ training and development not just at elite level but basing it right at the grassroots level is important.

Some athletes feel they have to show they’re confident and talk about what they’re going to achieve. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with just quietly believing in yourself and just getting on with it. You don’t have to talk about it all the time; you want your performances to show for it.
My guess is many top athletes, distance runners included, use performance-enhancing drugs, enough so that the problem must be tackled.
I was runner that really started focusing on swimming at a very young age, and that’s kind of how I got into acting. I was at a school for gifted athletes and gifted artists, and I got injured one year and started hanging out with all the actors and dancers and all those crazy people and started getting the bug.
We can do a lot of different things as athletes – we can speak, we can mentor, we can coach.
One of the perks of being an actor is to get to meet athletes that you respect. Especially who played before my time. Brooks Robinson is one of those athletes; they just don’t make them any nicer.
In this culture, where entertainers and athletes wield such power, it seems only right to me that they try to make their influence a good one.
As athletes, we’re always trained to play through stuff. And I’ve played through all types of injuries – ankle sprains, shoulder, whatever – and with the brain it’s just different.
When I was young, I never dreamed about winning a national championship. I didn’t even play basketball. But I was tall. And long. And had large hands. I was made for the game. It found me later in life, compared to most collegiate athletes.
I firmly believe that all human beings have access to extraordinary energies and powers. Judging from accounts of mystical experience, heightened creativity, or exceptional performance by athletes and artists, we harbor a greater life than we know.
As athletes, when you find something that gets to someone you have to press their buttons.
If you talk to most athletes, the place you’re most comfortable is your playing field. I’m not so comfortable at a podium or talking about events.
Going back to the ’70s and ’80s I was one of the athletes who believed in true sport. I never took medical supplements, believed in diet and exercising. I always represent clean athletes.
Just being here at the Olympics is pretty incredible in itself. Seeing the unity of the athletes and to see how everyone has worked so hard to get here – and we are all so excited to be here – it’s awesome to be able to experience it.
I don’t want to say I was ever scared to voice my opinion. I was just trying to make a good example, I guess you could say. And even when I’m more outspoken, I believe that I am still making a good example for younger athletes and also future athletes.
I want to inspire the next generation of athletes, not just figure skaters.
When you’re young, you do dumb things. I just can’t understand why some other athletes never were extended that same excuse.
The style is getting faster and faster. The athletes are getting better and better. The future is pretty bright for WWE.
What if you didn’t have education for sports? People with a natural inclination for sports, athletes without any kind of education, without any kind of training, they would just be couch athletes instead of the world class Olympians that we have.
In reality, we can prove that the incidents of drug, alcohol abuse and violence have dropped dramatically among professional athletes – but the problem is it would be impossible to convince than fans, because of what they read on the AP wire.
Some athletes can master two sports, but most are only good at one.
I was an All-American in wrestling in high school, was National Champion in Chinese kickboxing in 1999 and have spent a lot of time around professional athletes, which includes my eight-plus years as CEO of a sports nutrition company.
Sports not only build better athletes but also better people.
Someone who wants to write should make an effort to write a little something every day. Writing in this sense is the same as athletes who practice a sport every day to keep their skills honed.
Shaq and Muhammad Ali’s my favorite two athletes of all time.
We’ve worked with Special Olympics Florida before, and I had so much fun doing that. It was really inspiring to meet all the athletes.
My parents were athletes; they met at a track meet: they were runners.

I think a lot of athletes when they get in their mid and late 30s, they focus more on kids, on family.
We’ve got teams and other countries have teams. Right now, we are going to their countries; we’re finding the best athletes; we’re bringing them to our team. We’re training them, we’re making them awesome, and sending them back to beat us. We’ve got to stop that.
There were very few people who were both intercollegiate athletes and Star Men.
Models are like athletes: You burn hard and fast.
They thought that athletes that worked out with my system wouldn’t be able to throw a ball because they’d be too muscle bound. Those are the misconceptions I had to go through for about 40 years.
Quite simply, my diet has and will always be everything in moderation. People look at Olympic athletes and think they must cut out all those things everyone else indulges in, and speaking for myself, I never did.
Personal honors never meant much to Bill Russell, one of America’s most successful athletes with 2 college titles, 1 Olympic gold medal and 11 – count ’em, 11 – N.B.A. championships with the Boston Celtics.
Had I been a great athlete, I’m not sure I would have even gone into coaching. I may have turned out feeling that my life ended when my athletic career ended, as happens so many times with various athletes.
In cross-country skiing, athletes propel themselves over distances of ten and twenty miles – a physical challenge that places intense demands on the ability of their red blood cells to deliver oxygen to their muscles.
For professional athletes, I think we have a responsibility to utilize our platforms to stand for something bigger than our individual selves and to be the voice and support for those who don’t have one.
I think there are lot more lows in an athletes career than the highs, but you’ve got to be bale to take them on the chin.
For athletes, it’s extremely tough to trust people with your finances. It’s so easy to be victimized.
The only thing I advocate for is for equality for female athletes because we train just as hard, and we’re always having a lot of head-to-head clashes, always competing against each other.
It strikes me that these days, clubs don’t even want players who can truly play any more; they just want athletes, quick guys who don’t have a football brain, can just run and run; some of them, Jesus. I can never imagine acting like that.
I don’t have a problem with athletes speaking up, but I want to make sure before they speak up, they read up.
Competing in junior fencing requires lessons, equipment, and travel that may cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month, keeping talented athletes from wielding sabers or masks.
Athletes make nothing like the money that footballers or even cricketers earn. If you are a female athlete you are at the bottom of the ladder.
I know that Ronda Rousey is one of the greatest athletes in this sport.
If you look at some of the strongest athletes in the world, they’re gymnasts. And they’re the most flexible. You can be very strong, very flexible, and still be able to move.
When you look at athletes, they have fundamentals.
Special Olympics is such an empowering organization for the thousands of athletes involved and those of us like myself who lend support to them.
BYU I think had a philosophy of nameless, faceless athletes for the greater good of BYU which is fine. We all did our thing and we’re grateful for it.
Very few athletes have the chance to be brought into the White House.
I’ve always been interested in working with top athletes, athletes who are pushing the edge and are really progressive in the outdoor space and adventure world.
Jeremy Lin is the only Asian American in the NBA today and one of the few in any professional U.S. sport. His arrival is surely leading other talented Asian American athletes this week to contemplate a pro career.
When athletes take a knee during the National Anthem, we must ignore President Trump’s absurd claim that they’re ‘un-American’ and instead understand that it’s very American to peacefully protest systemic injustice.
I think it’s important for athletes to set a tone in a way that we’re looking to build bridges.
Do you know how many athletes go broke three years after they stop playing? I want to help them hold on to their money. I mean, I know about budgets.
I think pressure is good. Just watching my brother and my dad be professional athletes, I think pressure has driven them and has caused them to excel more.
I was kind of unproven. I didn’t play in a high-profile school, and with that comes the notion that, ‘He’s not ready.’ I felt I had questions to answer. Was I going to be ready to play against elite-level athletes?
But you know we couldn’t compare what we do with what the British athletes did at the Olympics. We are very proud to be British and if we have done our bit to promote Britain in a historic year for the country that’s brilliant.
Cuban athletes represent the most expensive human cargo on earth. They are sitting on over a billion dollars of human capital if these boxers and baseball players would come over to any other field or ring in the world and begin to ply their trade.
The Olympics were produced absolutely the same way from 1960 through 1988. It was always the Western World against the Eastern Bloc. You didn’t even have to spend one second developing the character of any of the Eastern Bloc athletes. It was just good guys and bad guys.
I think women athletes who have been successful need to help other sports, those sports that are just emerging. That’s what I’ve been thinking about and looking forward to.
I really enjoyed playing rugby. I loved the camaraderie with the other athletes. It was kind of like fighting. Team fighting.
It’s in all of our interests to keep pushing athletes to see the big picture, and that’s sometimes very difficult.
We can find athletes. The biggest challenge is personality. It’s finding charisma. In most sports, they tell you to turn down the personality. Look like everyone else on the team. It’s the team; it’s not you. In this, it’s the opposite. It’s you, not the team. We want you to become the big star.
I feel like professional athletes are the ones that deserve to be tired. I’m just partying, and there’s definitely physical exertion involved in that, but it also fuels you as you go.
Actors geek out over athletes. Everyone knows that.
Amazingly, I think that a lot of times athletes are – are kind of in a position where other think they shouldn’t weigh in on certain social topics.
We are all totally committed as elite athletes. To think that pushing people around and bullying them is the best way to get results out of them is just ludicrous.
People really criticize professional athletes going into the Olympics. People don’t like change. A bunch of people don’t like the Olympics now because we’ve added skateboarding… We’re modernizing the sport.
It’s not even about looking good; it’s about feeling good inside. Celebrity Sweat makes everyone aware of that but in a fun way with their favorite athletes.
Being a reporter and chasing down an assignment isn’t an easy thing to do, especially when you’re dealing with athletes that are so focused and trying to get their little game plan together to perform under adverse conditions… it’s tough.
Too many athletes don’t have the ability to set a goal and then carefully go towards it.
When I was a little kid, I don’t remember looking up and seeing so many Hispanic athletes out there.
I have been involved in this sport since I was eight years old, so, hopefully, I can train and coach athletes down the line.
I’m not privy to the English set-up, but at the academies in Ireland, there is a huge focus on the weights room as opposed to whether they can throw a 10-metre pass on the run. They should be rugby players becoming athletes, not athletes becoming rugby players.
I’m really proud, just seeing a lot of the kids that have been inspired by me. There’s a lot of great athletes all over the world, and some of them don’t have the access or opportunity to play the game of golf.
There are athletes out there trying to get every advantage they can, including things like muscle and low-fat percentages. I feel if I’m the better fighter, I’m the better fighter.
Most athletes get intimidated once they see how many fans are out there, but it almost calms me down in a way because I think of it as a fun way to show off what I’ve been working on.
Do I have fat cells on my body? Everybody has fat cells. Do I have more than most other athletes? Probably.
We are doing very well for our country internationally, but when we are in Jamaica, our athletes are not being looked after. We are selling our country and marketing our country to the world and not being paid for it.
Good ideas are like Nike sports shoes. They may facilitate success for an athlete who possesses them, but on their own they are nothing but an overpriced pair of sneakers. Sports shoes don’t win races. Athletes do.
I think everybody gets bullied in their own way. Even athletes probably get it from their parents. To a degree everybody gets bullied.
There was a time when only athletes had sneakers. Entertainers having sneakers, on any level, is a blessing.
Africa has proven to produce some of the greatest athletes in the world, and it’s a joy to be able to help grow that talent and create a space for African youth to learn.
It is very easy to make athletes, and it is very difficult to make rugby players with that rugby instinct. I would like to think I have got a bit of rugby instinct and have become more of a rugby athlete along the way.
Being able to train and compete alongside the WWE – which houses some of the world’s most talented athletes – is an amazing opportunity.
Being a part of the Six Star team means I get to be a part of a fierce group of female athletes who have shown women that the right supplements can help us reach our fitness goals.
Sports are basically our way of feeling sorry for ourselves. Most men can’t become athletes. We’re watching guys who actually made it. We see them dunking and making touchdowns. Then we think about ourselves when we were younger.
Among the world elite there are a handful of athletes who are physically capable of winning it.
Olympic champions should be 100 per cent athletes who have made the sacrifices.
Where are the exhortations for children to reject the self-defeating stereotypes that reduce black people to violent, oversexed ‘gangstas,’ minstrel show comedians and mindless athletes?
I talk to student-athletes. I try to get them to remember that they’re not just athletes, but student-athletes. You need to get an education, keep your hands clean and try to represent the university.
It’s the duty of the federations to make sure that the funds reach the athletes properly. They need to make sure that the athletes get proper facilities so that they can win the medals for the country.
The fear among athletes and organizers is that sailing is becoming more associated with silver hair than silver trophies.
What separates sports from entrepreneurism, however, is that in business we constantly have to overcome undefined and unpredictable challenges. Athletes train for specific events and conditions, whereas entrepreneurs generally have little idea what they will encounter along the way.
I think many fighters could go pro in another sport. When it really boils down to it, it’s because we are the best athletes in the world.
What keeps athletes going is the optimism we are going to be able to compete again.
As Israel prepares to enter, my position is well known. It is one that I have taken at previous Olympics. It is wrong that the IOC refuses to have a minute’s silence for Israeli athletes that were slaughtered in Munich.
Eric has pro athletes on both sides of his family – plus, I used to play sports – so I’m sure our son will develop athletic ability.
Athletes are used to battling. The public would never learn their names if professional athletes had not shown courage at an early age. They learn they can overcome, but sometimes this becomes a false sense of security that leads them to the edge.
The sad thing is that I know no athletes’ names. I am not a sports girl at all.
My exercise is pall-bearin’ for athletes and food faddists.
One thing I’ve learned, and I don’t really blame anybody for this: most people who have a lot of money are the people that want to make money more than anyone. I’ve seen it with athletes, I’ve seen it with musicians, you know?
Athletes are extremists. When they’re training, it’s laser focus.
The beautiful thing about cycling is that it is so accessible and that pleased me when I was younger because you felt like you could almost touch the athletes.
Most pro athletes are super competitive, super clutch, and they don’t want to lose at anything.
Eventually I will own my own company and will provide advice to athletes and artists from the entertainment industry.
Meeting sports athletes that are the best in the world is a thrill to this day.
As a girl, I was a member of Birchfield Harriers, who had Kathy Cook, Tessa Sanderson and Sonia Lannaman in their team. Those were some of the finest athletes in the country, so it was great to see them up close.
We’re often portrayed as rich, spoiled athletes who play a game for too much money.
You look at all the athletes who come out of high school and college into professional sports. And they hit it big, they make money, and instead of saving their money, instead of doing the right thing, they go out and buy the biggest house, and the finest car, and then they get hurt, and it’s gone.
People don’t really understand how important our voices are. I think there’s a lot of athletes that don’t use their power that really should.
I definitely think the way the game is transforming, becoming more and more athletic, guys are great athletes out here and relying on the physical skills more than their tennis skills, almost, sometimes. So for that reason, matching up with some of these guys, I can’t keep up.
I don’t think it’s up to black athletes to get involved in political or racial issues.
I’m as proud as the next guy, but I’ve always been a little skeptical of the daddies who walk around talking about what great athletes their kids are.
Athletes peak for the Olympic Games and can take months to get back up to that level.
I think the American sports culture has the idea that professional athletes need so much, like flying private planes, which obviously we don’t, but that’s the American sports culture when they think of the NFL and the NBA.
To stand up to worldwide competition, we need a very strong set-up at home that produces athletes right from the beginner’s level and has the sustained back-up for the same athlete to finally go and win an Olympic medal.
That is what great athletes can do: they give us a model of striving for human perfection.
Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler and I used to argue for hours about who the best athletes are. I thought football players were better overall.
People love video games because they do things they obviously can’t do in real life. That’s especially true with sports games because fans love to step into the shoes of their favorite athletes.
The night before I compete, I like to have steak. Meat is especially important for female athletes because it provides them with the nutrients they need to perform at their best.
There is nothing wrong with athletes coming back from retirement.
I enjoy wrestling. I enjoy the sport. I get to go against the world’s best athletes.
A lot of people who’ve been athletes have come here and not been able to just pick it up right away. I hate using this example, and I love her to death, but Eva Marie. She was an amazing soccer player and athlete, but coming to WWE and getting in the ring was a whole different ball game for her.
Everyone, especially athletes and fans everywhere, need to make sunscreen and sun protection a priority.
I think every promoter’s job is to pump their athletes up. Like, you see, Dana White did it all the time with branding people: all of a sudden, they’re the best thing since sliced bread, just because that’s the promoter’s job.
I believe that athletes – especially female athletes in the world’s leading sport for women – should serve as role models.
When I was growing up, there were very few women athletes. I remember watching Olga Corbett, but Peggy Fleming and Janet Lynn were my role models. I never dreamt that I could be at that level. I remember thinking they seemed so elegant and regal and powerful and feminine.
For most athletes, there’s a focus on your own fitness, but I have to rely on my horse, too. I’ve been very lucky so far, and it hasn’t presented a problem, but you can never count on a competition going as planned until you’re there and actually doing it.
I had a great interest in sports. I had three older brothers who were great athletes. I was not.
Dance is certainly a sport, and they are phenomenal athletes, and they’re also artists.
I didn’t have a big-time contract out of college like most athletes. In fact I had no contract at all.
Just imagine if women’s sport was on the TV all the time – how many more female athletes we would have?
It is a business. I know we, as athletes and owners and people involved with the NBA, never want to say that it’s a business and things like that. It is a business.
That’s what it’s all about in MMA, we’re not the highest paid athletes in the world, so when you can get the big money fights you have to take them.
It takes about eight years to develop as an Olympic athlete, very few athletes actually who go there win medal in their first Games.
I have plenty of money, unlike other Hollywood celebrities or athletes that have not invested well.
In track years… track is not like other sports. You do have track athletes that stay in this sport until, like, 35, 36, but I think when you get to 28, it’s really difficult.
I hope young athletes can imitate my good side only, not the bad side.
I’m aware of the rift in the locker room. That’s just alpha males and supreme athletes trying to share the spotlight.
Top athletes understand that to play at their best, they must alternate periods of intense performance with periods of strategic renewal.
To try to prey on athletes’ livelihoods while one is going through a tough time is embarrassing to me.
I think it’s very easy for people to stereotype athletes, good and bad.
Money has changed today’s black athletes. Those who have the ability as African men to bring a change in a community that so desperately needs it are concentrating only on their own careers, some charities and how much money they can make.
A lot of athletes are stuck on themselves and don’t want to socialize and that kind of thing. When I see that, I hate it.
If athletes are found to have taken performance enhancing drugs, then they should be banned for two years, even if they are British.
I have read many studies out of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and they demonstrated that Vitamin E, Co-Q-10, and Fish Oil could protect the immune system of athletes and prevent disease.
I think there’s going to be pressure on all the British athletes. It’s a home Olympics at the end of the day. I like adrenaline, that’s something I feed off. I’m just going to go out there and do my best.
Athletes can definitely have an impact on society. And it’s great that athletes can be a part of uniting the population.
People think kickers in general kick field goals. But kickers are actually good athletes; we run and work out just like the rest of the football team.
Most athletes, we’re the good ol’ boys, part of the good-ol’-boy fraternity, and we take care of our brothers, and we cover up the bad habit and the bad play.
I explain to athletes, you’re supposed to be a well-oiled machine. You’re supposed to be in better shape than the people watching you. You’re supposed to be an unbelievable specimen of a human being. You have to treat your body different while you’re performing.
Making it financially does not protect you, though. Genetic gifts and a gigantic professional contract do not shield athletes from the effect of damaged childhoods.
I’ll say there’s a lot of good athletes out there, but the key thing that I see missing is being able to put it all together in order to tell a story. In every match you can tell a story.
It was so much fun being in the Olympic Village and meeting all the athletes.
As women professional athletes, you have to have respect for every player and individual. Beyond that, it doesn’t matter what your interests are. People can have their own lives.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, being ref is a very tough job – managing 10 of the best athletes in the world. At the same time, I think there is way too much ego from their standpoint.
That’s really what the Paralympics is about: these amazing athletes and this technology that’s allowing them to reach their full potential.
It’s interesting. I’ve known quite a few good athletes that can’t begin to play a beat on the drum set. Most team sport is about the smooth fluidity of hand-eye coordination and physical grace, where drumming is much more about splitting all those things up.
Marciano was an idol in a simpler era, when professional athletes were heroes and sportswriters were complicit in building legends rather than exposing them. To the public, all that really mattered was that Rocky had 49 wins in 49 fights and retired in 1956 as the undefeated heavyweight champion of the world.
As athletes, we’re defined by what we’ve accomplished. Those are what most people remember and what you get paid for. But I learned more from my failures than from all of my successes put together – failures as an athlete and as a person.
It eventually ends, and that’s what I think a lot of athletes forget. It’s 10 years after the Olympics, and you won the Olympics, and that’s great, but no one cares.
We’re professional athletes. I feel like I got treated better in college wrestling. I had a physical therapist on hand at all times, no matter what, when I was in college.
At age 12, or even eight or nine, athletes were my role models. So when I would say I wanted to be the best, it was just because I was seeing my idols and wanted to do that. I don’t think it necessarily was the most realistic thought process.
Lance Armstrong has joined the legion of the lost, the great athletes who were barred or exiled for sins admitted or charged or suspected.
It’s common knowledge that professional athletes earn extraordinary incomes. What is less known or understood is how the advent of these riches has seeped into the conscious and unconscious ways in which our society now parents children.
If pro athletes and entertainers want to freelance as political pundits, then they should not be surprised when they’re called out for insulting politicians.
Well, any time I’m preparing for a performance or even a rehearsal, it’s as if in a way, like any other athletes, these are muscles that support the vocal cords which are just I believe cartilage. It demands a kind of constant warming up and a constant feeling of where is the voice today.
American athletes, especially distance runners, are at a big disadvantage against the rest of the world. We’re expected to live by all the rules, like not being able to coach, but still train and make our own living.
Too many athletes are living in a tiny window. They have no vision for themselves – what they can be outside of football and what they can mean to a community. They just don’t know any better. My hopes and dreams are unlimited.
The UFC makes 80, and athletes make 20. That’s what happens. That’s the real story.
You have someone like Colin or many of the other athletes who have knelt, especially athletes of colour, and if you’re not respecting what they’re saying, if you’re not believing their charges of police brutality or racial inequality, you’re saying that they’re lying.
To have the athletes weigh in on a stage, televised, it makes no sense. Holding us at weight to run us through medicals and a staging process, it lengthens the time we’re depleting ourselves.
When you compete with better athletes, you also get better.
I am excited by the opportunity to join such an extraordinary group of athletes and be a part of the ‘Lucha Underground’ family.
Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of being paid like NBA, NFL and soccer and baseball athletes. They have that cushion where they can kind of hang out. Even the guys on the bench. But for us, we don’t fight, we don’t get paid and that’s the scary reality to it all.
‘Suena’ is what the essence of the Olympics are about. There are the best athletes in the world up on one stage. The love and admiration and respect for each other is amazing to see.
U.S. and Russia – both coach their athletes from the grassroots level on and provide scientific training.
Mick Jagger is one of the greatest athletes who ever lived, just for how much he puts into it onstage.
Once you’re past the age of, say, 11, you should stop idolizing athletes. You look ridiculous wearing the jersey of a guy who is younger and wealthier than you are.
I like to take on athletes who have issues with me.
The psychology of performance in athletic footwear and apparel is very real. Most athletes do not say, ‘Just give me what works the best – I don’t care what it looks like.’ They’re very concerned with what it looks like and how it makes them feel.
Before a big event, I usually go to church and light a candle for St. Sebastian, who is the patron saint of athletes.
I do like athletes as they have amazing self-discipline.
Yoga, meditation, and unplugging the phone at night to make sure I get enough hours of sleep. That’s huge for athletes.
I think the four major leagues ought to set up a joint commission – say, of retired judges – to rule on athletes who are accused of doing bad things away from the game. Then each league would retain its independence in determining what penalties their players should get for infractions committed within the sport.
In skating or any amateur sport, as athletes we share something in common: the cost of training is quite a burden on our parents or on the athletes themselves trying to find a way to pay for their costs.
The beauty of the World Cup is that while thirty-two countries get to cheer for their respective teams, the event also affirms a global pluralism – it is as much a festival of cultural multiplicity as it is a competition featuring some of the best athletes in the world.
I’m a firm believer in… just because these guys are professional athletes or whatever, everybody’s going to have an opinion on something, and not everybody’s going to get along. I’ve had my words with fans on Twitter too.
Athletes like me, PT Usha, Anju Bobby Gerorge have reached finals in Olympics, and it’s not easy to reach the finals. If Indians were genetically inferior then we wouldn’t have reached even finals.
Castro was always using his athletes as a way of symbolically defeating the United States in the ring, and after these Cubans defeated Americans in the ring, they were turning down exorbitant sums to leave the island.
Training of female athletes is so new that the limits of female possibility are still unknown.
Nutrition is also a valuable component that can help athletes both protect themselves and improve performance.
The most important thing to me is to inspire all these athletes in the next generation.
It means a lot; I always love to represent my country, and it’s an honor to be part of the Olympics and be with other athletes.
I was always raised as a student first and an athlete second. I think that’s the main purpose in college. Some athletes lose that perspective.
It’s important to remember that because these athletes exercise so beyond what even a normal active person would, they generally must also supplement their diet.
They are always open to come to South Korea and play, because we never reject North Korean athletes.
Getting to know athletes from all over the planet is a big part of the Olympic experience.
I’m the world’s expert on sterotypes held by academics about athletes and held by athletes about academics. To me, both of them are caricatures.
Personal technology has given us the freedom of being able to do whatever we want – and in the case of celebrities and athletes, whomever they want. But it can also serve as a humiliation jetpack.
I had pain in both knees my whole career. Not many athletes play pain-free. Mine was just more than normal.
I think any actor can relate to the feeling of ‘Just tag me in, coach, give me a chance.’ Athletes go through the same thing. To be quite honest, most people in any job or career probably go though that, when you want a chance to prove what you can do, or somebody is taking away a chance at something you can do.
That’s the neat thing about the Olympics – so many of these athletes, they don’t make a ton of money, they train for four years to compete, and they realize, ‘Look, this is a blessing that I have this chance to represent the United States of America.’
Professional athletes, like it or not, have a responsibility to the kids of America.
I have always been small and one of the smallest heptathletes out there. And earlier in my career, I was faced with coaches and athletes who felt I was too small to be a multi-eventer. It gives you a push to show you can do it.
Athletes can not look the same and be great in their individual sport. The example I like to use is Gabby Douglas. She could not flip in the air if she was built like me, but then Gabby Douglas couldn’t throw the shot put. I was built like this because I was made to throw the shot put.
Food fighters in Japan think of themselves as athletes. They have a higher recognition of the game and are constantly thinking about records. I probably won’t continue for long because it puts pressure on the body. But I am at the age where I can perform my best.
Mike Tyson was one of the most terrific athletes I’ve ever met.
It’s no surprise that optimistic athletes, managers and teams do better. What’s interesting is where they do better. It’s in coming back from defeat and acting in the clutch.
Let’s start with the athlete, Nike’s original and most important collaborator. To us, everything starts with the insight. That’s why we work with the deepest roster of athletes, to gain the most profound understanding of what’s needed to perform.
Men do really dumb things. We see weapons of mass destruction where there are none. We over-emphasize sports. We place athletic achievement ahead of academic achievement. We spoil and pamper child athletes and then complain when they act spoiled and pampered as adults.
Just being with some of the best athletes in the world is a marvelous experience.
If we carry on filling up the calendar, we keep on pushing the athlete, we shorten the athletes longevity. The risk is to shorten a career that could have lasted 10 years because the athlete is burnt out.
I know that BMW is now a sponsor of the USOC – of the United States Olympic Committee – so they offer the use of their aerodynamic speed-tunnel for testing and such for the athletes, which is a great advantage. But to be honest with you, I’d rather have a free car!
In the World Cup, people of many nations come together for a fierce competition. To field the best team, all the competitor nations know that they need to train their athletes for many years, starting as early as the first moments a child can recognize a soccer ball. No shortcuts. No late starts.
We start to decline as humans and, particularly, as athletes right around 25 years old. If you’re real lucky, you might push that to 27 or 28.
Out of the tens of thousands of prosthetic legs they’ve made, there’s never been any 400-meter athletes run under 50 seconds. So, if this was such a technologically advanced prosthetic leg, then how come not everyone’s qualifying, or coming close to the qualification time, then?
It was the baseball fantasy of a lifetime – to be able to sit on the bench with all those professional athletes. I got to take my son along because I wasn’t sure I would be able to play with them.
I would never encourage my children to be athletes – first because my children are not athletes and second because there are so many people pushing to get to the top in sports that 100 people are crushed for each one who breaks through. This is unfortunate.
The peacocking nature of baseball players and athletes in general – you’re all kinda competing for who’s got the most swagger.
I have to stay hydrated. It’s very important for anyone, but especially athletes! We sweat a lot, and we need it.
As athletes, we want to represent our country to the best of our ability.
With the exception of undertakers, athletes are the only professionals obliged to feign sorrow on a daily basis, pretending that every June baseball loss is a tragedy requiring library silence in the clubhouse.
I went from 185 lbs to 285 lbs, became a 7X Mr. Olympia, tying Arnold Schwarzenegger, and competed against the most determined and fittest athletes in the world. This took hard work, tremendous dedication, and knowing what, how, and when to train.
Sports are evolving and always evolving, and people have that determination to keep going and coming back. I think I’m one of those athletes. I stand to show that people shouldn’t give up. You’ve got to just keep going until you succeed.
I’d like to see the high schools put in a rule that limits recruitable athletes from playing on teams outside a 100-mile radius from their home or school.
The actors in ‘Eight Men Out’ really know how to play, and the background athletes are all professionals.
No one works harder at inspiring athletes all over the world than our team at Nike. Creating those experiences requires an amazing amount of energy, a steady flow of big ideas to excite and surprise people, and a constant dialogue that connects us on a personal level.
Cameron was able to get an inside look at professional football from the standpoint of athletes and agents and general managers that few people have ever seen.
Gender equality cannot be achieved by cutting programs that allow girls to get the same chance to compete, learn, and play. The United States has had a solid history of commitment to its female athletes and expanding opportunity for women, and it is imperative that we continue on this path.
Most parents are able to be with their kid every day. Every day of their life, their parents have an opportunity to be with them, and we don’t have that luxury as professional athletes. That’s the hardest thing.
That’s what defines the best athletes: being capable of showing up year after year at the highest level.
Well, I mean, Russia was responsible for shooting down MH17. Russia was responsible for invading Ukraine. Russia is responsible for taking away the chemical weapons in Syria that they didn’t take away. Russia was responsible for having honest athletes in the Olympics when they did the whole doping program.
I’m very proud of the fact that we dispelled the myth about black athletes not being able to survive in Green Bay.
I didn’t have any specific gym training, my parents weren’t athletes and I wasn’t born into the fitness industry.
As professional athletes, we get pitched business or investment opportunities all the time, wherever we are.
We’re professional athletes. People know who we are, and if there’s some way we can help with a friend or someone in need, that’s a responsibility we have. I really strongly believe that.
Historically, companies haven’t hesitated to end their relationships with professional athletes amid scandals.
You could ask any position player and they’ll tell you: pitchers aren’t athletes.
Ballet dancers are among the greatest living athletes.
I feel like people always thought my sister and I were models. I think it was just because if you went through Diva Search, that’s just what you were. We were never models; we were athletes. We were athletes who fell in love with wrestling.
Working in sports for nearly the past twenty years, I have seen first-hand how gun violence affects athletes and their families.
I long for the days when athletes were revered. I want to see the romance return to sports, to see people enjoy the game purely for the game and the players.
There are a lot of great athletes on the PGA Tour and a lot of good basketball players. But I can definitely put my name in the mix as one of the best.
I am actually a huge supporter of the Canadian athletes, and they are all really nice people.
Many think that elite athletes like me are taken care of. But that is not true, only a few like Sindhu are looked after well.
Elite athletes learn entitlement. They believe they are entitled to have women serve their needs. It’s part of being a man. It’s the cultural construction of masculinity.
We need new athletes all the time because we need new games every day – fudging just a little on the definition of the word ‘need.’ We like to have new games every day, and, if we are to have a constant and endless flow of games, we need a constant flow of athletes.
Entertainers, athletes, and stars started giving me support.
We found our joy in being athletes in PyeongChang. Our biggest joy was being on the ice. Every moment revolved around just what it would take to win the Olympics.
I think cryotherapy is excellent for anybody and not just athletes.
So you had to rev your engines, to beat the Russians and I think more than anything, if the Soviet team would win, or the Soviet athletes would win, you would see and hear and read about that. Quite frequently. So they would make a big issue of it.
On behalf of all Americans, I would like to congratulate Michelle Smith on her dedication and determination which have made her a wonderful role model for all young athletes in Ireland and around the world.
I don’t think we know who a lot of these athletes are. We think we do, but they’re never allowed to be themselves. Because the minute they try, people are saying, What’s wrong with him? Why is he drawing attention to himself?
I see a lot of athletes that don’t really use social media, or they’re saying the same stuff. I kind of wanted to change the game.
I try to encourage all my teammates, and I sure hope that some day all athletes – my kids, high school kids – get the same level of care I get. Because you can play for a long period of time without having knee replacements, without having all the major head trauma that people are dealing with.
We don’t need any help – the athletes and the coach don’t want any help to win.
I won an MVP trophy with the St. Louis Amateur Baseball Association. I didn’t even start. I was a sub on this team. This was, like, an All-Star game where we had athletes from different teams, different mixtures. We had, like, the only black team in the league, basically. We had four players go to the All-Star game.
The contracts are structured different than athletes in America, but for me, it was good to move on and go back to playing in the premiere league, which is the best league. It was disappointing, as far as the team goes, but for me, there wasn’t much I could do.
I think sometimes fans or people kind of get confused. They think these athletes or superstars aren’t human, but they are.
I always tell young athletes the same thing, ‘Wherever you go, whatever you do, what must your top priority be? Running.’
Skating in itself is a difficult sport, and the amazing athletes within the sport are very challenging.
Many athletes competing in Atlanta wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for corporate support.
As athletes, as people, the way we’re looked at in the community, and through kids, we’re looked at as role models. The more we can use that to help build better relationships, to help people get along better, we have to acknowledge that and we have to go and do our part with that.
Athletes are moved – human beings are moved – by challenges.
I know the UFC’s a big organization, the best athletes and fighters are here, so… every third or fourth month, I’m ready to fight.
I’ve just been competitive all my life. That draws from a competitive family. We’re all athletes, and we’re all trying to win no matter what it is, whether it’s Scrabble or basketball.
I know firsthand the way that Fox supports their athletes because they’ve been there for me since the beginning. I know that I can count on them.
To be honest, I’m shocked the University of Washington’s sports teams are called the Huskies. Why haven’t the Leftists that run this entire state demanded they be renamed the ‘Athletes of Size’ so as to not fat shame anyone?
I believe that some athletes have fear, but you have to work on that. Athletes can’t have fear. Fear of what? Fear of losing? Everybody loses one day.
We’ve all heard stories of lottery winners, rock stars, heirs and heiresses, and professional athletes becoming millionaire morons who wake up rich but are broke by nightfall.
I don’t have all this money people think Olympic athletes have.
I would love to encourage all my teammates to eat the best way they possibly can. High school athletes. Now, that’s not the way our food system in America is set up. It’s very different. They have a food pyramid, and I disagree with that. I disagree with a lot of things that people tell you to do.
Ireland has always been a nation of great athletes from the past: in the nineties, we had Sonia O’Sullivan and Steve Collins.
The actual act of sitting out doesn’t directly fight systemic racism. But it does highlight the reality that without black athletes, the NBA wouldn’t be what it is today. The league has a responsibility to our communities in helping to empower us – just as we have made the NBA brand strong.
Seattle is still more Caucasian than most medium-sized cities. The sort of psychosexual politics of white fandom in context of black athletes who are also both very rich and slightly angry is just, to me, bottomlessly fascinating.
I was an athlete in college, and Wall Street likes athletes because they’re very competitive people that are willing to do anything to win. So I got a job at Bear Stearns in the summer of 2007.
You want to be leaders and you’re black and I’m here to tell you how to do it. Disconnect from this social media garbage; disconnect from these celebrity athletes who don’t really care nothing about you.
I’m probably in the bottom 25 percent of athletes in the big leagues, just on pure athletic capability. But I’ve taught myself, through a lot of hard work and study and science, how to be really good at one specific thing.
With the athletes, there’s a lot of diversity. But when you look at the management, coaching and the boards, there’s not that much diversity there. I think it’s diversity within those roles that’s needed.
At the end of the day, everything is God’s plan, and he cares about what we do. He cares about our hearts, how we play the game, and how we treat people. He’s definitely involved with how we handle sports and not just the outcome of it. I’m proud when athletes mention God in any way.
After winning a medal, many athletes give up and go into oblivion, the reason being lack of encouragement.
It is great to see our young athletes get an opportunity to run on excellent tracks at the Medical College Stadium. And I am happy to see spectators coming in large numbers to cheer our young champions. That is something you would not see in many parts of Kerala.
Olympic athletes have to find a job right after they’re done competing.
You can’t really rely on a couple of athletes to deliver you medals in five consecutive Olympic Games. It’s absolutely unrealistic. You have to have a system in place where you continue to increase the depth of the sport which pushes performance levels to higher standards.
I never thought that shoes would be the reason that you recruit players, but it’s a factor. I think we need to get the shoe companies out of the lives of the athletes. I think we need to get it back to where parents and coaches have more of a say than peripheral people, but that’s easier said than done.
We are going to help the young talented athletes become world champions.
I know what I am getting into with heavyweights. Not one of them can dictate against me because, firstly, they don’t have feet fast enough. Secondly, while there are far better athletes and stronger fighters than me, even some who are quicker, they don’t have the ring IQ I have. It allows me to dictate.
Athletes love challenges, and golf is something you can never master.
Bobsleigh is best for athletes who are fast and strong, which were my strengths in softball.
In the early 1980s, top athletes hardly got the kind of exposure needed.
Shaquille and I kind of joke we were the Christopher Columbus of social media. We’re kind of out on a boat by ourselves going through these uncharted waters. But it’s become more understood, embraced and accepted, and now it’s pretty much expected by fans for athletes, leagues and teams to be there.
Whenever there is money, power, and titles involved, players are going to be corrupt. That might be a political statement, but that’s what it is for the athletes, too.
