Nature is impersonal, awe-inspiring, elegant, eternal. It’s geometrically perfect. It’s tiny and gigantic. You can travel far to be in a beautiful natural setting, or you can observe it in your backyard – or, in my case, in the trees lining New York City sidewalks, or in the clouds above skyscrapers.
Being in Newcastle is a very different way of life to Tenerife. The climate is very different but the city itself is beautiful and I love being here.
I am not a BART regular but have taken it probably five times to and from the city with some of my teammates. Nice to just hop on the train and enjoy some of the views of the Bay Area while I’m out.
Have you ever been to Glens Falls? The city limits signs are on the same post.
I lived in Red Hook, Brooklyn, for about 10 years, and then we moved out to Jersey City after my wife and I bought a house up in the Catskills. I miss Brooklyn, but the commute to the Catskills is about 45 minutes shorter.
My dad didn’t graduate high school. My mom is a high school graduate. My mom is a factory worker. My dad owned a bar in the inner city.
In all my years in show business – on stage, clubs and TV shows – my audience has been 75 percent white. In Las Vegas and Atlantic City I look out at the crowd and only see a few black faces here and there. But I can’t allow myself to be conscious of the race factor. I couldn’t perform my best under those conditions.
I live in Harlem, New York City. I am unmarried. I like ‘Tristan,’ goat’s milk, short novels, lyric poems, heat, simple folk, boats and bullfights; I dislike ‘Aida,’ parsnips, long novels, narrative poems, cold, pretentious folk, buses and bridges.
The attacks on the World Trade Center and the current economic recession, which is particularly powerful in New York City, have put a number of building plans on hold for the time being.
We need a real tent city in the heart of Moscow.
Venice is unlike any other city simply because you travel primarily by boat. Time warps, and I love the feeling of it slowing down.
We thought we’d name the magazine for the number of bridges within Edmonton’s city limits. We thought this number was 18. Much later, we learned that the number is actually 21. But we didn’t like the sound of that so much.
I use the setting of a small rural Norwegian community – the kind of place that I know so intimately. I could never write a novel set in a big city, because, frankly, I don’t know what it would be like.
Gluttony is harder than it looks. It’s listed as a sin, as something you give in to, when really it’s a skill, requiring not just hunger but resilience. That’s why the most resilient city in the country, New Orleans, is also the most gluttonous.
There is a heavy-ego, solitary model of being an elected leader. We’ve certainly seen that in some other mayors of this city… I have much more of a Movement mentality. It’s much more of what I’m steeped in. I don’t think it is first and foremost about me. It’s about the ideas and the agenda.
The map we made of the 3,000-year-old city of Tanis requires no imagination. It has buildings, streets, admin complexes, houses – clear as day.
Until the end of elementary school, I lived in a suburban area, so the type of village I used to live in is borderline between village and the city, so I’m familiar with the rustic environment.
As a child, I used to have a secret dread – and a recurring nightmare – of the whole world becoming city, being covered with cement and buildings and streets. No more country. No more woods.
I’m in love with cities. I find them amazing, the quiet co-ordination of thousands of people, going about what we’re trying to do, and that organism of the city nurturing human aspiration, and the actual city fabric itself being a special thing rather than just infrastructure.
There’s pride on Bourbon Street for the musicians that work there. They take it very seriously. I’ve never worked there or played in band there, but it’s a part of the city. They play for the tourists and represent a whole different side of the culture of our city.
In Seoul, there are plans to create a blockchain ecosystem to make it a city that will be recognized as the center of blockchain in the world.
I used to do my Nelson Mandela voice to blag restaurant tables in Cape Town. It rarely worked. Now what a great city that is.
When I was a little kid, all I wanted to do was to escape what I thought was the country and get to a city. Probably film and television had influenced me so much, I really thought the key to happiness was living a very artificial life in a penthouse in New York with martini glasses.
I wanted to finish my career with one team, in one city, one mayor, one park, one owner. I did that. The Wrigleys owned the team. We played all of our home games at Wrigley Field during the daytime. So my career was very unique, and I am proud of it.
And I come here as a daughter, raised on the South Side of Chicago – by a father who was a blue-collar city worker and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me.
If a hurricane strikes, we can blame the president for not being there; we can blame Congress and FEMA; we can blame the state governments; but in the end, it’s the mayors and the local city governments that have to be prepared for emergencies and be prepared to act.
I love New York City; I’ve got a gun.
I was inspired to see leaders from Paris, New York City, San Francisco and Vancouver, B.C. rolling up their sleeves to create clean and safe transportation systems; make homes and buildings efficient, comfortable and affordable; and ensure more of our energy comes from clean sources like wind and solar.
Only through the conscious action of the working masses in city and country can it be brought to life, only through the people’s highest intellectual maturity and inexhaustible idealism can it be brought safely through all storms and find its way to port.
I think unleashing 3,000 smart bombs against the city of Baghdad in the first several days of the war… to me, if those were unleashed against the San Francisco Bay Area, I would call that an act of extreme terrorism.
Unknown in Paris, I was lost in the great city, but the feeling of living there alone, taking care of myself without any aid, did not at all depress me. If sometimes I felt lonesome, my usual state of mind was one of calm and great moral satisfaction.
In my opinion, New York City police officers are brave.
I see myself as half country boy and half city boy, so I need both to balance me out. I couldn’t spend all of my time in either place.
Remember Circuit City? Bear Stearns? Lehman Brothers? Sports Authority? Once, all were billion-dollar companies – then gone in a moment. The fatal problem might be fraud or corruption, but more often, it’s simply that management didn’t see ‘over the other side of the hill.’
Manchester City are a big team, and Chelsea are a big team.
All in all Hyderabad is a beautiful city. I think I have fallen in love with it.
Why should we build very large spaces when they are not necessary? We can design halls spanning several kilometres and covering a whole city, but we have to ask, what does it really make? What does society really need?
Often an entire city has suffered because of an evil man.
SP is the only party which can put in efforts for the development of the State. Therefore, I request Kanpurites to vote for the SP candidate and ensure progress of the city.
The life of our city is rich in poetic and marvelous subjects. We are enveloped and steeped as though in an atmosphere of the marvelous; but we do not notice it.
I feel absolutely no threat or fear in Mexico City.
I had a dream of music and art and the big city in which I would get lost, where no one would know me and I wouldn’t know anyone, where I would work at some ordinary job, and if one day I got up in the morning and decided I wasn’t going to go to work anymore, no one would ask questions.
My company is called East-West Theatre precisely because Sarajevo is this city on the border between East and West, the place where the Great Mosque and the Catholic Cathedral and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral stand almost within touching distance of each other.
The restaurants express the spirit of the chef, the spirit of the city, the country.
I urge you to read the Occupy Manifesto, written by the New York City General Assembly. It is unavoidably clear. This is not directionless action. If it were, the media would have moved on.
Carnegie was a life-long dream because I was a born New Yorker. I was born in upstate New York, and we’ve played Radio City, and we’ve played The Beacon, but Carnegie was this mystical place, you know?
Instead of giving a politician the keys to the city, it might be better to change the locks.
We can’t all work in the inner city. And, I don’t even think that it is incumbent upon an African-American intellectual to be concerned in their work with problems of race and class. It’s just one of the things, that we here at the DuBois Institute, are concerned about.
You cannot say no to a club like Man City. I did not think twice.
I studied Shakespeare at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, and ‘Orange’ was my first audition ever for TV or film.
Money plays an important role in football, but it is not the dominating factor. When Chelsea play a Carling Cup game in a small city, and it could result in a draw – the excitement, the spirit, the atmosphere – that’s the real beauty of football in England.
