Meditation hasn’t separated me from my life and my friends and my work. It’s just made my fear go away, so I can just be that much more engaged.
I am alone a lot, which is good. I need that time to just be alone after a long day, just decompress. So, I go to either my house or the hotel, or my apartment, or whatever – wherever I am, I go home and I watch TV and I sit there, with my cat, and I just watch TV or go online, check my emails.
Nobody’s going to fix the world for us, but working together, making use of technological innovations and human communities alike, we might just be able to fix it ourselves.
If I could, I would not do anything else. I’d just be in the studio for my whole life. I would never go to parties, events, and red carpets. I would rather just be in the studio for the whole time. I don’t even care. Nobody has to know what I look like. I just want to make music.
I tried for a short time to be something I wasn’t, and had no success with it. It’s a practical solution to just be yourself.
For whatever reason, I encounter Canadian whiskey at hunting camps way more often than I do in restaurants, bars, or homes. Could be the lower price. Could be the mellow character, which lends itself to long hours of fireside sipping. Or it could just be tradition.

One way I deal with stress is when I feel a certain way, I just do it. It’s like, I want a hamburger, so I’m just going to eat a hamburger. I don’t want to answer your phone call right now – I’m not going to answer your phone call. Just be able to say, ‘This is how I feel. This is the way it is, deal with it.’
I think higher ed in the U.S. is fairly healthy, and by global standards it dominates, and it makes people more productive. But a lot of our K-12 is a disaster. And the single most important reform would just be to fire the worst ten or 15 percent of teachers in the lot, and we would have massive improvements.
I’m not trying to live a social media life or a life to just be in a magazine.
If I had to drop everything and just be a songwriter, I would be OK with that because that’s the real joy.

For anyone who feels they are overwhelmed by their job, or maybe they take their job too seriously or are working too hard, I say go to a safari, particularly the Okavango Delta, and just be humbled.
Well, the first quality of being a good leader is you have to be able to follow. See, a good leader can’t just be the leader all the time, I have to be able to follow.
