I lost my father and went into a process of grief with it that was all about how to replace that grief, how to fill it, and I think there was something very desperate in the way that I was replacing it.
Right now we’re in the process of writing new material for a new record.
I worry about what I can control, and that’s come out and improve every day, enjoy the process, count your blessings, and work extremely hard.
The creative process is mysterious; a conversation, a ride in the car, or a melody can trigger something.
I’m not one of those James Joyce intellectuals who can stand back and look at the whole edifice… It was a slow process for me to just crawl out of it, like a snake leaving his skin behind.
David and I got cut out the editing process on that. We were able to affect it more than not. We sent in our notes, we were able to see cuts. We weren’t allowed to see dailies and we weren’t allowed to sit in the editing room and just work.
It is an honor and a privilege to be of service and support; however, I realize people are not putting their confidence in me. Instead, they are actually learning to trust themselves. My job is to affirm and support them in the process and teach them to do what I do when I need strength: I begin within.
