Black liner looks harsh on me because I’m so blond, so I do a brown liner with a black mascara. My favorite is ‘L’Oreal Voluminous’ on my top and bottom lashes. For a while, I only did mascara on the upper lashes, but it makes me look too pretty.
I’ve always loved coach Brett Brown. I’ve been on record. I’ve been a fan of his for years.

Fortunately, I’m known as the hardest-working woman in showbiz, not to compete with James Brown. I’ve always been a multi-tasker.
I like a kind of dark, bronze-y brown smoky eye with maybe some mascara, some contouring and stuff, but I don’t like wearing black or pinks. I like it more tonal.
I feel like we have so much to add to this book called the American Dream, and I want to add our chapter to it. I want to talk about what it means to be brown American and this concept of what I feel is the New Brown America.
The music that I will continue to make will certainly draw upon those experiences of being a loner, of being an emo goth kid, of being a New York City aficionado, of being a witch, a feminist, a brown radical woman.
James Brown really taught me a lot – his lyrics and his performance and whatever he does when he’s onstage. I’ll always call him a legend, and I’ll always respect what he did.
When I was at Brown, I wanted to write the great American novel, but I was too scared to take a creative course. I signed up for one, got in, and just didn’t have the courage to go. I was a tremendously shy person, almost pathologically shy. The thought of peers critiquing my work – oh, God.
Chris Brown is brilliant. That cat is crazy brilliant, and I wish him the best.

In preparing for my recording audition, my mom told me to YouTube the old ‘Peanuts’ Thanksgiving and Christmas specials to hear how Charlie Brown speaks. So I listened to as much as I could find online to get the voice right. Winning the role took a lot of hard work, but good fortune as well.
Bass Weejuns are the Cordovan black or brown penny loafers originally called Norwegian Loafers, hence their name. Worn without socks in the spring and summer, they must be kept to a high-gloss polish and should become burnished with wax over time until they have a fine patina.
Our Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has given the Government’s support to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill. It is difficult to imagine a single piece of legislation which, more comprehensively, attacks the sanctity and dignity of human life than this particular Bill.
Marilyn Monroe had thick, dark eyebrows even though her hair was platinum and it looked gorgeous. It worked because she had brown eyes – dark eyes can handle a dark brow even if the hair is blond.

Post 9/11, brown people had this force pushing us together. It’s like we’re all being looked at with fear and suspicion; we’re all being targeted, so how do you support yourself and your communities?
For many people, Mrs. Brown has come from the middle of nowhere. But Mrs. Brown was first written for radio. I wrote it for a radio series in 1992. It was a five-minute piece for radio, and it’s been absolutely astonishing.

Black and brown pride have been taught in my household for a long time.
I remember as a young man seeing these bigger-than-life, strong images of black manhood in the form of Jim Brown and Fred Williamson, Jim Kelly, Billy Dee Williams. All these guys were these alpha males who were smart, attractive. I said, ‘Wow, I want to be like that.’
There was a bidding war between Epic Records and Jive – now RCA – which was bittersweet. Just having labels bid over me was really cool, but I ended up going with Jive because it felt better over there, and they have my favorite artists like Usher, Chris Brown, and Justin Timberlake.
I’ve really learned a lot from Zac Brown over the years. He is someone that I consider to be one of my best friends, and besides my parents, he has taught me more than anyone else. Zac is, by nature, a giving and understanding person.
Beauty and the Beast seemed like it all was really brown. The whole thing was just so brown and orange and yellow, like Burger King or something. I don’t think I would have liked Beauty and the Beast at any age.
One of my favorite Tarantino films is ‘Jackie Brown,’ and ‘Jackie Brown’ does it so well, where I’m watching the back half of that movie, and I don’t know which side Jackie Brown is playing. I think it’s really ingenious for Tarantino to keep us in the dark on that.
You can’t shoot in sepia, so converting into black and white and then into brown makes everything feel less real.
I want to be remembered for a body of work so that when the next guy comes up, he could think of Sterling K. Brown in the same way that I think of Andre Braugher and James Earl Jones.

I feel like ‘Gossip Girl’ isn’t really ‘Gossip Girl’ anymore when they’re away at school because they don’t go to NYU; they go to, like, Yale and Brown. New York City is just as much a character as anyone else in the books, and I was really sort of reluctant to show them off in their separate college worlds.
With James Brown, I just learn the lyrics and then get out there and get funky with it and let my spirit free. But doing Charles Bradley, it’s a lot of true, intimate words coming out of me that show me the picture inside myself.
Everybody has their own taste, and I allow for that, but personally, I don’t like a striped tie on a striped shirt. I don’t like brown shoes with a blue suit. Cordovan maybe, but not brown.
