Doo-wop is the true music to me, man. Doo-wop was what nurtured me and grew me into who I am, and I guess even when I was in school, the teacher probably thought I had ADD or something every day, because I’d be beating on the desks, singing like the Flamingos or the Spaniels or Clyde McPhatter or somebody.
I’m working hard to break free of stereotypes that the film industry has created and nurtured around women.
My style has been nurtured over time. It’s more about knowing what doesn’t suit you. I love suits and anything sharp, and I know that shape suits me. I don’t feel feminine in floaty dresses with spaghetti straps – I feel more like Freddie Mercury in drag.
Traditional musical forms like ‘Parai Isai’ and ‘Villupattu’ are unique, and they need to be protected and nurtured.
They say the music you listen to in your formative years stays with you and leaves an impression for the rest of your life. For me, the things that I fell in love with happened in the ’70s, when artists were nurtured by record companies and it wasn’t about singles.
I went to middle school and high school, and my drama teacher, Ms. Cooper, basically nurtured me. It was always a part of my life, and my parents allowed it to be.
