I’m open to reading almost anything – fiction, nonfiction – as long as I know from the first sentence or two that this is a voice I want to listen to for a good long while. It has much to do with imagery and language, a particular perspective, the assured knowledge of the particular universe the writer has created.
A lot of my reading over the next few months will be the works of Hans Christian Andersen – I have been appointed an ambassador for the bicentenary celebrations of his birth next year.

Reading isn’t good for a ballplayer. Not good for his eyes. If my eyes went bad even a little bit I couldn’t hit home runs. So I gave up reading.
‘The Dublin Magazine’ has been edited with good taste, and it is very agreeable reading, but to speak quite candidly, I do not believe in the future of any literary journal any more than I believe in the future of the Trinity.
I was born in Japan and moved to L.A. when I was six, and I grew up with Japanese culture. I was reading manga, and I read ‘Death Note’ in real time in Japanese.

In reading plays, however, it should always be remembered that any play, however great, loses much when not seen in action.
I hear people all the time say, well I read through the Bible last year. Well, so what? I’m all for reading through the Bible. But how much of that got on the inside, or did they just cover three more chapters today? I would never discredit reading the Scriptures, but it is important to meditate on it.
I want to write so well that a person is 30 or 40 pages in a book of mine… before she realizes she’s reading.
Yes, but another writer I read in high school who just knocked me out was Theodore Dreiser. I read An American Tragedy all in one weekend and couldn’t put it down – I locked myself in my room. Now that was antithetical to every other book I was reading at the time because Dreiser really had no style, but it was powerful.
I want other kids to see the joy in reading and literacy and how, if you read about things, they become so much closer, and if you’re willing to put in the effort and time and passion, you can really understand them.

There’s no reason anybody should be reading too much into ‘Thrift Shop.’ I just have because I have a 10-year-old and a 7-year-old who are really into going to lyric websites, hitting print, and printing lyrics for every song that’s popular.
I’ve been pretty good at reading people. If you rockin’ with me cause you’re just a solid individual, then we’re rockin’. But if you got a motive or something, I am going to probably see right through that.
It’s exciting to do something like this because usually what happens in theater is that, after the first or second reading of a play, it falls apart completely and the rehearsal process is such that you begin to pick up the pieces and put it back together again.
