As a result of the asthma I was sent to school in the country, and only visited Sydney for brief, violently asthmatic sojourns on my way to a house we owned in the Blue Mountains.
So I remember both medicine, because I frequently sick, particularly with asthma for which there was no proper treatment then, and in religion I had a strong sense of there being a patriarchy.
I’m a hot mess when it comes to any physical activity. My body just pours sweat. Not a lot of people know, but I always have my trusty inhaler with me. When I start to have even a little bit of an asthma attack, I just start dripping sweat. It’s my body’s emergency system.

I have treatment-resistant depression and I need to take medication to rebalance my brain chemistry – just like someone with asthma needs theirs.
For years I felt that I didn’t have enough stamina and then, four years ago, I felt like I was not getting enough air but I was diagnosed with exercise-induced asthma. The medicine for asthma never worked.
