I was questioning what it means to be a man. I didn’t feel as masculine as I thought I should. I was out of shape, slightly depressed, inactive, and didn’t feel like I belonged to something. I started thinking about what the definition of a man is, and realized they’re all these archaic tropes.
I don’t understand why brothers can’t understand the fact, or even just accept the fact, you can still be a man without having to commit crimes.
You don’t have to be a man to fight for freedom. All you have to do is to be an intelligent human being.
The law does not require a man to cease to be a man, and act without regard to consequences, when he becomes a juror.
I think the main thing was me having a daughter. I just knew that I had to be a man, so I grew up real quick. Then I started caring about my music more, and I feel like that was the main change between ‘Killer Instinct’ and ‘TRAPSOUL’. I was just like, ‘I need to take this more serious and watch the things I say’.
Not having a father is big. You need guidance. I know, personally, when my father died, I needed guidance; I needed somebody to show me how to be a man, how to grow up, basically how to do the right thing.
It seems to me that it will be very wearisome to be a man.
Whenever someone says something bad about you, just confront them on it and just be a man and own up to it. If you said something you shouldn t have said, and it’s important to somebody you need to talk to, you need to go talk to them. Be a man. Step up.
We have so many young men, especially, who are growing up without their dads. We have to fill that void. We have to do a better job helping young people see what it means to be a man, what it means to be a woman. And then, somehow, we have to put that family structure back together.
Even in ‘Victor/Victoria,’ there was talk about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a man. You didn’t get that in the old days, in ‘Charley’s Aunt’ or ‘Some Like It Hot.’
You can be a man who loves a woman but love someone the way a gay man loves another man or a woman loves a woman.
If I’d learned nothing else, it was this: If you want to be a great writer, be a man. If you can’t be a man, write like one.
Women have been given these bodies to produce children, and the spirit and tenderness to take care of people around us. It’s fine to be an outspoken and working woman. I don’t want to be a man.
