I started traveling, performing, doing photo shoots and working on new music. At the same time, I was juggling homework and trying not to miss out on too many experiences during my junior and senior years – like prom and graduation.
When I was on ‘All My Children,’ we did a thing for ‘Seventeen Magazine’ where a girl won a date. I went to her prom with her in Alabama, and she was a sweetheart. I didn’t move to Alabama and I didn’t buy a farm there, but we still keep in touch.
Young girls – like friends of my daughter’s – always ask if we do prom dresses, and we do dresses that would be lovely, but £2,000 isn’t realistic for most girls. The Debenhams collection will hopefully be great for that sort of event because the price point is much lower.
We had to decide: Do we want to do Saturday Night or go to our Senior Prom? We opted for Saturday Night Live.
If a girl comes to me first for a prom or a bar mitzvah and she likes the way she looks and her boyfriend likes the way she looks, she’ll come back.
I never think of myself as any kind of sex symbol, but I get letters from all over, all sorts. It’s really cool. I get a lot from inmates, which is kind of scary. But the best was the guy who wanted to send me a plane ticket to fly me to his prom.
Sports helped me become super, super confident in my body growing up, especially in my high school and college careers. I wasn’t going to be a hot prom chick that everyone wanted to go on dates with, but I was a stellar athlete.
I’ve gone to prom multiple times, had fights with the principal, a relationship with my teacher. When people ask if I wish I had gone to high school, I tell them that I’ve acted all of that stuff out, and it just doesn’t seem like fun.
When I went to prom, I wore my hair down. But I love the idea of a long dress with your hair up. It’s just gorgeous.
In the past, the biggest mistake I’ve made has been trying to treat election night like the first and last time anyone will ever see me on TV. I’ve worn dresses that were more prom time than primetime.
When I grew up, I never – I wasn’t allowed to go out. I missed my prom because I went to an AAU tournament and all that stuff. For me, it was basketball, basketball, basketball.
When I was in high school,we were, like, 4,000 or 5,000 students, and 50 girls – and I didn’t have a date for my prom. My father paid my cousin to take me.
I’d never bought a bottle of cologne in my life, never dabbled in Drakkar Noir before the big high school date or Polo before the prom.
In high school I never went to the prom because I was too consumed with gymnastics. Also, with my hair in pigtails and looking about 10, I wasn’t exactly date material.
For my prom I really wanted to wear a bright color – something that was going to pop and stand out.
I’ll take being on Baywatch over being Prom Queen any day.
Buffy’s very similar to me to me when I was growing up. A child in an adult world, sort of trapped between the two. Does Buffy go to the prom or does she save the world from demons?
I wasn’t a cheerleader or the prom queen. I don’t move through the world with a mirror in front of my face, and I’ve never been attracted to projects that had an emphasis on what I look like.
Isn’t prom just a fun dance that hardworking students deserve? Sure, but it’s also an event where girls internalize damaging cultural messages.
I was prom king. Which is actually saying I was the sixth most popular, because the five who were on homecoming were automatically disqualified from prom, so of course I have to look at it that way.
I work with a charity called Donate My Dress. It’s got chapters all over the country where you can donate special-occasion dresses. Prom is a big deal when you’re 15 years old, and it enables girls who don’t have the money to come in and choose something special.
It’s funny: when you’re skating around during warm-ups, I’ll see signs that say things like: ‘Kane, Prom?’ We have a fun, young team, and girls are asking you to the prom and giving you their numbers.
