I didn’t think reaching the NBA was a possibility when I coached Derby in 1990. I was right out of college when I went there and was more concerned about playing a bit and getting that out of my system.
Medina Spirit earned his Kentucky Derby win and my pharmacologists have told me that 21 picograms of betamethasone would have had no effect on the outcome of the race.
I loved the world of roller derby because I thought it was such an empowering metaphor, that you get out there and do it. It’s such a rocker, athletic, capable, cool exhibitionist sport; it’s about this great sort of camaraderie.
I gave up at the right time, scoring a goal against Derby. I didn’t hear anybody shouting, ‘Please stop, you are getting too old.’ That’s a success. And I don’t want to come back for the sake of it.

The derby is always the most important match of the year and it’s always nice to score goals against the leaders and the best teams.

Of course I danced a lot when I was making ‘Swingers.’ The swing music scene was big in Hollywood, and I went to places like The Derby. And, after I wrote it and was trying to get it made, I would go every week so I’d be good at dancing.
I’ve always paid a lot of attention to the races that go on throughout the offseason, being the Snowball Derby, the Chili Bowl, Rolex 24; races that I admire and really enjoy watching.
I think, always, the form of the players is a decisive factor. And a game-plan and the referee. He can influence the game. And in a derby, a cool head is also very important.
Before I knew I was going to the Derby, I had my shrink on call. It’s a special, special moment.

There are two things I will always remember. First, a shot against Derby that hit the inside of the post but didn’t go in, and we could only draw 2-2. And then the really big chance against Bayer Leverkusen, two minutes from the end of the Champions League semi-final, when I shot over the bar. That hurt a lot.
I really enjoyed my first Istanbul derby.
I went out to the Derby on Wednesday and think it is the most interesting thing I ever saw over here.
The best thing about the Kentucky Derby is that it is only two minutes long. It is the quickest event in sports, except for Sumo-wrestling & Mike Tyson fights. Maybe Drag-racing is quicker, but I have never been attracted to it.
