I finished ‘Ice Age: Continental Drift’ in 2012, and I’m living in my agent’s guest bedroom in Los Angeles because you don’t make a ton of money writing an animated film. The movie makes a billion dollars, and you make ‘twelve cents.’

‘Ice Age 4’ came totally out of nowhere for me. I was told Fox Animation was interested in hiring me as a story supervisor or something or other that sounded way too professional for me.

I don’t think so-called high technology matters in death. I think they had high technology before Noah’s Ark. And it got lost because that was the first Ice Age.

A favorite film? The first ‘Ice Age’ and the first ‘Despicable Me.’ They’re the films that have introduced me to characters that I still feel extremely bonded with.

I have been very fortunate since ‘Ice Age’ to make movies that somehow charm audiences. I think that the key to it for me has been coming up with the right ideas but, more importantly, choosing the right collaborators and artists to execute those ideas.

Fox came to us with the concept for ICE AGE and they came to us with the first draft of the script. They also gave us a mandate to make it into a comedy from what was previously a rather dramatic action concept.

Often extinctions in the ocean occur at the same time as those on land. Then again, the ice age extinctions lost many big animals, but not many sea faring ones.

I just don’t like boring myself. That’s one of the main reasons I did ‘Ice Age’ – because I’d never done something like this before.

I’m praying for ‘Ice Age’ 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Because I really think we can run those characters into the ’60s, and I’m talking the 1960s, you know? The Civil Rights Movement. That’s what I’m praying for, because then I wouldn’t have to do anything else.

From a scientific perspective there is some indication that a nuclear war could deplete the earth’s ozone layer or, less likely, could bring on a new Ice Age – but there is no suggestion that either the created order or mankind would be destroyed in the process.

My nieces and my nephews think the only thing that I do is ‘Ice Age.’ That’s fine with me because pretty soon they’ll grow up enough to realize that I suck or that my time has passed, whichever it might be.

I go back to family: ‘Ice Age’ was about disparate characters rejected by their own kind. They come together to save the child. ‘Despicable Me’ is about redefining what a family could be. It has a visual distinction and an experimental quality.

I think we’re going to carry the ‘Ice Age’s up to ‘Ice Age 15,’ which means basically they’ll be in the present decade.
