I think, probably, being a young artist, there were a lot of things I thought I knew and I wanted to do, and I was like, ‘Oh! That’s what I want to do.’ And then it took me in a different direction with ‘I Think We’re Alone Now,’ and then all of a sudden, I was a pop star.

When I’m out and about, it’s rare for me to be recognized. But for some reason, every now and then, someone will know who I am. It might be because my picture occasionally appeared in ‘Weekly Jump.’

I work out almost every day, which gives me more energy and helps me feel stronger. I also try to be a genuinely good person to the people around me.
Every now and then, someone will tell me that one of my books has made them laugh out loud. I never believe them because: a.) my books don’t make me laugh out loud; and b.) sometimes I have said this to a writer, when really what I meant was, ‘Your book made me smile appreciatively.’
I figure I wrote 37 songs in 20 years, and that’s not exactly a full-time job. It wasn’t that I was writing and writing and writing and quit. Every now and then I wrote something, and every now and then I didn’t. The second just outnumbered the first.
