I’d love to do a live album, like a little bit old school but still progressive, influenced maybe by more electronic music. I like everything, but I don’t know anything about music. So it comes in to a lot of different ingredients. I love hip hop.
These days, rock ‘n’ roll is much more about rock than about roll. I don’t do rock. But I’m interested in that roll part, because that’s the funny little bit that makes it hip.
I needed to be sexier. I needed to be more hip. I needed to be more edgy and this and that. ‘No, don’t write that kind of song, write this type of song. No, don’t work with that producer, work with this producer. No, don’t wear those clothes, wear these clothes.’ And I didn’t want to be a puppet, you know?
Hip hop is the strongest form of protest there is, and it doesn’t always have to be a violent protest. It can be romantic, also. When you listen to Kanye West’s ‘Street Lights’ for example, there’s romance, there’s pain – you feel the essence. I get the same thing from Drake and 2 Chainz.
I would like to encourage hip hop artists to invite those of us who are in the queer spaces in, so we can have those conversations. I love hip hop. If you bring me in the studio, I know how to act. And we can talk about what’s not cool because, clearly, there’s still homophobia that penetrates in all these areas.
Battling is therapeutic for Hip Hop, but you can’t take it serious. I mean, you got to take it because when you’re preparing your material for your opponent but when it affects your heart or when you let it get too personal… you got to have fun with it.
