Evil comes in through the cable and through the Internet. We look forward to the advent of driverless cars. But they can be hacked. You could be riding along, and some 14-year-old in Romania takes over your car, so you end up running the lights and losing your brakes or, worse, listening to Eminem. What’s the purpose?
Nature is economical. She puts her lights and darks only where she needs them.
As a dad, you are the Vice President of the executive branch of parenting. It doesn’t matter what your personality is like, you will always be Al Gore to your wife’s Bill Clinton. She feels the pain and you are the annoying nerd telling them to turn off the lights.
My office doubles as a karaoke den for the neighborhood. There are strobe lights and Rock Band plastic guitars, a disco ball and a fog machine and some other things. I have a really long work day, and you might find me doing karaoke by myself late at night.
I think my father kept struggling to get us into better neighborhoods, better schools. One of the worst jobs he had was folding shirts under these fluorescent lights all day at the equivalent of a Kmart. I remember visiting him at work, thinking, ‘When I grow up, I’ve got to do anything else.’
About forty miles away from Paris, I began to see the old trench flares they were sending up at Le Bourget. I knew then I had made it, and as I approached the field with all its lights, it was a simple matter to circle once and then pick a spot sufficiently far away from the crowd to land O.K.
There is the myth that writing books for children is easier than writing books for grownups, whereas we know that truly great books for children are works of genius, whether it’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ or the ‘Gruffalo’ or ‘Northern Lights.’ When it’s a great book, it’s a great book, whether it’s for children or not.
‘Friday Night Lights’ was an incredible show.
I’m a firm believer that lighting affects mood, and twinkly lights on strings bring something magical to occasions ranging from concerts to weddings, though I’m fond of using them as year-round home decor.
Some of my favorite records growing up were Christmas albums. The ones I liked best were the albums that you could listen to from start to finish. You could put them on while you’re decorating the tree or driving around looking at Christmas lights.
I like to wear something I can move in, and light colors because of the stage lights.
I grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and went to a big high school called Douglas McArthur where there was a lot of track and a lot of football. It was a bit like ‘Friday Night Lights.’ I used to spend a lot of time at the track.
I remember just weeping my way through the ‘Friday Night Lights’ finale with my best friend and just being so happy all the way through because it was so beautiful.
But I really felt that, something about the lights going down, and the sense of community. I saw this movie at one festival, and there were 1700 people.
I started shooting ‘The Defenders’ two days after I wrapped’ Friday Night Lights.’ I was doing research for ‘The Defenders’ throughout – interviewing lawyers and sitting in courtrooms just to watch – but there’s something fun about throwing yourself in the water and learning by doing.
