The way I approach an election, I assume nothing. I run scared as a jackrabbit.
‘Election’ made zero money at the box office, but it started my career.
The 2008 election settled nothing, not even for a while. Our national politics are reflecting what appears to be going on geologically, on the bottom of the oceans and beneath the crust of the Earth: the tectonic plates are moving.
Now in its third year in office, the Obama Administration has never championed the cause of human rights. Its slow reaction in June 2009 to the stealing of the election in Iran and the birth of the ‘Green Movement’ there, and its delay in backing the rebellions in Egypt, Libya, and Syria, are evidence of this problem.
I know what it takes to win. I know a general election is going to come down to not only Republican voters but my ability to connect with independent and women voters.
It’s insanity for a party that believes in freedom to allow some Republicans to seize an agenda that is totally alien to the agenda that was established in the election.
Rahul Gandhi has promised to remove poverty and unemployment. There is nothing new about the election promises of Congress. Had only half of those promises been fulfilled, India would have been the most prosperous country in the world today.
We, as entrepreneurs, can be held responsible for our actions every single day, not every election cycle.
This is not an election where we hand out gifts. It is an election where we ask everyone to contribute more.
If there were an election today, Netanyahu would win. Yet, his standing in the polls is also a reflection of the weakness of Ehud Olmert, the current prime minister – who stands at 2 percent in a recent poll – and the enduring weaknesses of the Labor Party.
Unfortunately, money in politics is an insidious thing – and a loophole in our campaign finance system was taken advantage of with money going to existing or new 527 groups with the sole purpose of influencing the election.
In a government such as ours we have vigorous contests to determine who should lead. The recent election was no exception. Now we inaugurate a new government on a day that transcends any one individual or any one party.
What the voters told us in the 2010 election was that they wanted a change. And I believe a moderate approach with a dedication to working across the aisle, something I know is important to both me and Congressman Shuler, is the best way forward.
Responsibility for overseeing the implementation of election law typically resides with partisan officials, many with public stakes in the election outcome.
Most of the provisions designed to fix what ails our health system don’t kick in until 2014, which, one wishes administration officials had noticed, is two years after he has to win an election.
When a party loses a national election to someone such as President Trump, it’s time to rethink everything.
What’s important is that, come the general election, people think the right things of you. They think that you’ve got the right values and the right policies. And that you’re the right kind of person to lead the country.
On election night 2000, I had never met then-Governor Bush, though I’d supported him for years. I believed he would be a strong, optimistic and gracious president with solid conservative principles and a big heart.
It is important that the Iraqi people have confidence in the election results and that the voting process, including the process for vote counting, is free and fair.
No one is confused about what a Democrat is in a presidential election. In every election other than a presidential election, our voters are confused. We’ve given out too many different messages.
The 2014 election was not a repudiation of government in general.
It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.
If you ask me whether the election of Barack Obama is the fulfillment of Dr. King’s dream, I say, ‘No, it’s just a down payment.’
It is not just software glitches and corrupted memory cards that should be on the minds of election officials. Hackers pose another very real problem whereby an election could be tilted towards a favored candidate.
An election is a moral horror, as bad as a battle except for the blood; a mud bath for every soul concerned in it.
Bill Clinton was a brilliant politician. If President Obama was a brilliant politician he would have come out before the election and said ‘Hey we’re gonna cut taxes, grow the economy, what I’m doing’s not working, and we’re gonna change course’ like Clinton did.
In the past we couldn’t talk to non-union workers. Now we can at least talk to non-union workers so we’ll be mobilizing them and educating them not for just six or eight months before an election, but we’ll be doing it year-round.
Certainly we know from our own experience how very difficult it is when you’ve lost an election that perhaps a lot of people were expecting you to win.
As I get close to my election, I want to spend more time in my district and focus on my reelection.
I have never lost an election yet. I am a winner. Let’s just say that.
It is very difficult for any dictator or any incumbent to falsify the results of an election and just get away with it.
A screenwriter heard me read from my novel ‘The Wishbones’ when it was still in progress and mentioned me to some producers in Hollywood. They called, and I told them I had a novel in my drawer about a high school election that goes haywire. They asked to take a look, and my life changed pretty dramatically as a result.
In the end, that’s what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or a politics of hope?
The most depressing part of the 2016 election is that the candidates often failed to show any cultural leadership: any recognition that the world of public policy was important but hardly the only good and necessary part of our shared society.
During the Cold War, America undertook serious military cuts only once: after the election of Richard Nixon, during the Vietnam War. The result: Vietnam fell to the Communists, the Russians moved into Afghanistan, and American influence around the globe waned dramatically.
In every election in American history both parties have their cliches. The party that has the cliches that ring true wins.
During the election, I had three male opponents and we went into a runoff. The front runner for the men was a native of Dallas who had run at large before, but I had a higher profile than him from my community service.
The election of Senator Barack Obama brought jubilation across Africa, where millions celebrated him as ‘one of their own.’
It was a long, difficult summer of 2004. That was a leap year, so several things happened – the Olympics and presidential election. And right in the middle of the election campaign – and I don’t think this was an accident – the 9/11 Commission delivers its report.
Regardless of who wins, an election should be a time for optimism and fresh approaches.
Win or lose, we go shopping after the election.
If we were to have a presidential election in Europe it would be an event that would spark a huge interest in people from Lisbon to Helsinki, just like national elections. And it would create a completely different political setting in Europe.
Trump’s election could be a blessing in disguise. This is the opportunity for America to correct itself.
Mandates are rarely won on election night. They are earned after Inauguration Day by leaders who spend their political capital wisely, taking advantage of events without overreaching.
No election is ever just about one issue, but I care a lot about women’s rights and making sure parents have what they need to raise healthy kids. I always have cared, but having just had a child, I know how serious it is to be a mother. It’s an incredibly huge challenge. You need support. You need resources.
During the 1960 election, I saw Richard Nixon as the winner.
I’ve often heard the complaint from both Democrat and Republican voters alike that they hate the fact that politicians get into office and they – and they’re fearful, they’re fearful to make tough decisions because they think more about the next election than they do about the next-generation.
Prior to my election, young Cherokee girls would never have thought that they might grow up and become chief.
This election is about who’s going to be the next President of the United States!
I consider personally the election of Barack Hussein Obama to have very great symbolic meaning. A Muslim and a Christian name – so in his name there is a synthesis, although people from time to time want to overlook that, and they do it intentionally.
It is a paradox that far too few Americans participate in the wonderful ritual of democracy that we call Election Day.
If it’s a close election, then it’s better for the Supreme Court to pick the president, whether or not he won the election. It’s just insane on its face.
I don’t know much about Americanism, but it’s a damn good word with which to carry an election.
I am saying that in Wales here we have a very clear election commitment and I hope, and I will express this view, I hope that every individual member of the Labour Party, will understand that and will strive to achieve unity so that we can deliver the yes vote in the Autumn.
