My job is summer camp. I come and talk and try to make a TV show funny.
Some people might say, ‘It’s training camp, the grind of things, can’t wait to get to the regular season. Things will be easier.’ But I look forward to it.
Around the time Andre Villas-Boas became manager I went to a summer training camp in America. But when I got back, to my horror, I found that all my kit had been moved into the reserve team changing room. I was told I wasn’t allowed in the first team dressing room anymore.
Growing up, I used to go to the Fred Hoiberg camp all the time. I used to have so much fun there – just me and my friends going to these camps, having fun playing around.
When I come into a camp, a team, I look to be the best player every snap.
I got baptized in June of 2001, I think. But I always went to church camp, went to church every Sunday, went to Bible class.
No matter what I do, it’s all about the workouts. When I travel, I make sure I get my workout in first. When I’m in camp for a fight, I don’t travel at all, and I train three times a day. The secret is to just keep working.
Basketball Without Borders is a leadership camp that takes basketball to different places around the world, to Africa, Europe, America and Asia. It’s a camp that brings players from different parts of the continent to one city that’s been assigned as the host city. We’ve been going to a different city every year.
I was a camp counselor for kids whose moms were on welfare, unfortunately, and right across the camp was the best, most pristine and preppy camp in the universe.
In talking with affirmative-action administrators and with blacks and whites in general, I found that supporters of affirmative action focus on its good intentions and detractors emphasize its negative effects. It was virtually impossible to find people outside either camp.
Crime stories are our version of sitting round a camp fire and telling tales. We enjoy being scared under safe circumstances. That’s why there’s no tradition of crime writing in countries that have wars.
We’d only speak Korean at home. They wouldn’t let us have sleepovers and sent us away to Korean church camp during the summers. We had weird food concoctions, too, so instead of spaghetti bolognese, we had rice bolognese with kimchi.
I went to performing arts camp, secretly taking classes – I got the lead in the musical, and my dad was like, ‘Wait, I thought you were going here for music and knitting’.
Location is everything, I’d rather camp in the Lake District or Scotland than sit in a five-star hotel in Frankfurt.
You should make an effort on stage because it’s a performance. The stage should be glittery and camp, but I don’t go down the shops in full stage gear.
I do have a camp side to my personality, but I also have a ‘Top Gear’-loving, football-loving side.
When I was younger, I played sports and went to camp. As I got older, my parents began to instill in us the importance of giving back to the community, especially those places around the world that are less fortunate than my very privileged life growing up in Los Angeles.
I was eight when he left office. Like, he had an awesome house, you know, and my cousins and I had awesome trips to Camp David and Washington. It was just all like a good time for me.
When you step out and do a song in a musical, the easier thing to do is make it funny. But when those transitions become necessary, when they aren’t camp, that, to me, is magic. I’ve done musical comedies and enjoyed them, but subject matter that’s deeper and more realistic is always what’s appealed to me most.
Soap operas are like TV boot camp. You have to be able to self-direct, learn a ton of dialogue in a short amount of time, and deliver a performance in one or two takes.
When I was 13, I was in my tent at Girl Scout camp, trying to change out of my bathing suit and talking at the same time. I fell out of the tent in front of everyone with my bathing suit around my ankles. I was humiliated – but no amount of humiliation has ever seemed to stop me.
I believe it was seventh or eighth grade: I went to a Danny Ford football camp. A buddy of mine was a big Clemson fan, and coach Ford put on a camp, and we did actually enjoy ourselves.
The journey has been long, fleeing a war, living in a refugee camp, coming to Canada is what we were dreaming as a family to get here. Now that we’re here I’m excited that I’m a Canadian citizen.
I knew from a young age that I wanted to perform. I went to an arts camp called Brookdale Arts Camp, in New Jersey, from the time I was 6, and then I was a counselor there through high school.
When I know that I trained real hard and I had a good training camp, that’s when I’m very confident. But sometimes I don’t train hard and I don’t feel that confident.
It’s a bit like school camp, shooting a film. Everyone’s on heat. It’s a strange energy. It’s full of adrenalin. I funnel my excess energy in funny little ways. I do a lot of dancing in my trailer. I love music.
The events of the day’s march are now becoming so dreary and dispiriting that one longs to forget them when we camp; it is an effort even to record them in a diary.
‘Saturday Night Live’ was actually started with a show that Lorne Michaels and I did at a summer camp called Timberlane in Ontario when we were 14 and 15. We would do an improvisational show with music, comedy and acting.
‘Revenge’ is a shameless soap in the style of Eighties shoulder-pad slap-offs like ‘Dallas,’ ‘Dynasty’ and ‘Falcon Crest.’ Yet there’s no wink-wink camp.
About guns, about hunting, it’s safe to say I know nothing. The last gun I fired was a musket at Boy Scout camp.
I prefer not to return to the Camp Nou wearing another shirt. It would be strange. But if that’s what destiny holds.
Growing up, politics never trickled down to the areas we come from. But people from Obama’s camp, and Obama himself, reached out to me and asked for my help on the campaign. We’ve sat and had dinner, and we’ve spoken on the phone. He’s a very sharp guy. Very charming. Very cool.
We record in the spirit of the Berry Gordy camp and Gamble & Huff, where people were writing up to a dozen quality songs within a day because the competition was that hard.
I shall begin my march for Camp tomorrow morning. It was not in my power to move until I could procure shoes for the troops almost barefoot.
Boot camp sucks – SEAL training sucks – but you know what? That’s what makes you good.
Just like footballers want to play at Wembley, the Nou Camp and the Bernabeu, boxers have their dream arenas too.
I think that Vancouver as well as Canada needs a boot camp for young entrepreneurs. We have already seen tens if not hundreds of people put their names forward to be involved in the program, and we just think this is an amazing way to accelerate what they’re doing.
When I was in school, I used to go to the Pangode army camp, a stone’s throw away from where I was staying in Mudavanmugal in Poojapura, just to watch the army parade.
For my training camp against George Groves my main sparring partner was a 6ft 7inch cruiserweight who fought nothing like George. It was just wrong. Wrong preparation. I was as fit as could be, but strategically I didn’t prepare right.
All I did was pray to God, every day. In prison camp, the main prayer was, ‘Get me home alive, God, and I’ll seek you and serve you.’ I came home, got wrapped up in the celebration, and forgot about the hundreds of promises I’d made to God.
Until I was 16 or 17, I had heard practically nothing about the history that preceded 1945. Only when we were 17 were we confronted with a documentary film of the opening of the Belsen camp.
I’m more in the Stones camp than the Beatles camp.
The Ritz Hotel has never yet provided game of such wondrous flavor as the bird plucked and half-cooked over the small boys’ camp fire.
In 1998, I was screening ‘Good Will Hunting’ at Camp David. And I was saying, ‘Nice to meet you, Mr. President. Nice to meet you, Mrs. Clinton.’ Madeleine Albright, Sandy Berger, Senator Daschle. It was an extraordinary day.
Puppet camp truly redefined my preconceptions of puppetry… I’ll never forget learning that before a puppet can speak… he has to inhale. It’s those details that make the characters truly come to life.
But when we came out of camp, that’s when I first realized that being in camp, that being Japanese-American, was something shameful.
I went to hockey camp at Michigan because my dad has some relatives in the Ann Arbor area. We went to visit them as kids, and you start to learn the language from being around people. At the same time, when I got to college, I thought my English was better than it really was. I learned a lot over my four years.
I’m constantly not on the right side of history. I sympathize with the soldiers in the enemy’s camp. For example in WWII, we know the Nazis and the Japanese were wrong. But I sympathize with the individual story of a soldier who was drafted into that.
My memories of camp – I was four years old to eight years old – they’re fond memories.
One of the biggest misconceptions was, after I left Dream Theater, I went off and did, like, five different bands and side projects. Everyone was like, ‘We thought you wanted a break.’ And it was like, well, I didn’t want a break from making music; I just needed a break from the Dream Theater camp.
