Personally, I’ve realized that the tradition I thought of as too safe, too pretty, and too conventional is the space where women have been able to gain some practical ground. The area of music where we thought the status quo was really being upset – specifically hard rock – has actually remained the most male-dominated.
If you’re an impressionistic painter and you want to paint expressionism, you’ve got to change. You’ve got to figure out a way to do it and do it. If you’ve been playing jazz all your life and you want to start to play rock n’ roll, blues, then do it.
We’ve gone further on this album, where we have a Big Band song, kind of a Sinatra-type song; we have a couple songs that have electronic music on them. We’ve got a couple rock songs, maybe a little heavier than what we’ve done. So the title ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ really covers the breadth of the record.
What I wanted to do in rock ‘n roll was merge poetry with sonic scapes, and the two people who had contributed so much to that were Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.
Times were changing. Clothes were changing. Morals were changing. We went from romantic loves songs like I used to do to rock ‘n roll. Now that has changed to rap. So, there’s always a new generation with new music.
Elvis Presley was rock ‘n’ roll, I thought that was pretty mediocre. But since that time, the succeeding steps in music has been down, just more degradation. Then we got into punk rock, and now we are into rap music, which is a total oxymoron.
My dad was one of the reasons I got into rock and roll, because I was learning the ropes of his business, which was selling powertools, and I was looking for a way out from under his heel. I was like, ‘Where’s the fun? Where’s the glamour?’

If I had more confidence, I would rock a crop top.
You know, he’s a bit of a rock star, but I think he’s consciously learnt how to make people feel comfortable around him. Because otherwise, how could anyone act opposite him? The whole time you’d be thinking, ‘My god, it’s Johnny Depp!’
I am not a rock star or a movie star; I’m a businessperson. I definitely know who my friends are. I’m much more open and trusting than, say, my daughter is.
I’ve asked these guys in rock bands with all the 18-wheelers driving to the venue how they make money. I just don’t understand it. But I don’t understand a lot of things.
Over the holidays, and even during filming, I realized that I actually like my body, even if it’s not perfect according to the book. I just feel sexy. For the first time, I don’t want to get rid of the curves. I just want to tone it up. My body is comfortable, and it’s not unhealthy, so I’m going to rock with it.
I remember opening up my first vinyl and seeing the incredible artwork it had. There’s nothing like it. You also get that true gritty sound on vinyl that really makes a rock record sound great, which CDs can never achieve.
Rock Hudson let his gay agent marry him off to his secretary because he didn’t want people to get the right idea.
If the Police could do a reunion… One of the biggest jerks I ever met was Sting. If he can do it, then anyone can do it. It’s not that big a deal. And the Eagles! They did it! They severely hated each other. It’s just rock and roll.
When it came to music growing up, it wasn’t just gospel and R&B. My uncle brought rock n’ roll to me when I was younger, and I loved it. I was open to all music.
I began with dance, doing ballet at 3, then tap, jazz, modern. Then I sang in church choirs, learned how to play clarinet and drums, sang with rock bands and only then did I get into musical theatre.
It’s illegal to be gay in Little Rock – this is such a reality for so many people, but once people get to these bubbles of New York or L.A. or Boulder, Colorado, they forget.
When I started out, everyone seemed to be adopting these names… Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious. I wasn’t really Rotten or Vicious or Nasty, so I wanted something a bit more funny – yet something that seemed real rock ‘n’ roll… something that acknowledged my ambition.
I am to wrestling what Elvis was to rock n’ roll!
My husband and I always have fun together in everything we do. Some people call me crazy, but the reality is that I enjoy spending each second with him. He is not just my husband – he is my rock and my very best friend!
I’m the greatest rock and roll drummer on the planet and you suck.
I was madly in love with Elvis Presley. Dad wasn’t into it at all, at least not for himself as a performer. He used to say, ‘Mr. Cole does not rock n’ roll.’
I hate the word gothic but I would like to try doing something like that. A gothic sound, not rock, but gothic. There’s a difference.
I think a great first date would be something different… not like movies or going to dinner… going rock climbing together… doing an activity and then going to dinner, so that you guys share an experience, and then you have something to talk about, and it’s not the same old thing.
We try to keep everything as in-house and small and as punk rock and do-it-yourself as we can. That’s part of our way of doing business.
Rock n’ roll is for the young idiots, not an old fart like me.
Rock ‘n’ roll offered me a platform to speak what I felt. It also offered me a platform to support my mama and my brothers and sisters – twelve children.
What’s incredible with Trent Reznor is how he took all the alienation and the rejection of traditional rock and found a way to encapsulate it in a form that made the public finally get industrial music.
If you live in rock and roll, as I do, you see the reality of sex, of male lust and women being aroused by male lust. It attracts women. It doesn’t repel them.
I wish that I had been in ‘School of Rock’ because, when I was younger, that movie was the movie. It really made me want to be an actor – that’s so cheesy. But I remember seeing it when I was little and loving it so much, being like, ‘I wish that I was in that.’
If you’ve lost focus, just sit down and be still. Take the idea and rock it to and fro. Keep some of it and throw some away, and it will renew itself. You need do no more.
Satan has declared war on motherhood. He knows that those who rock the cradle can rock his earthly empire. And he knows that without righteous mothers loving and leading the next generation, the Kingdom of God will fail.
The rock sitting on the shelf has potential because it can fall-it’s the same way with the Internet. It has this potential. It’s not really doing it yet, but it’s about to.
If it’s illegal to rock and roll, throw my ass in jail!
I would definitely say the Oakland Raiders are the punk rock band of football.
Yeah, man I am going to be writing a book soon. The reality of being in a rock band in the music business’.

Rap actually comes out of punk rock, not black music.
Algerians cannot offer what they do not have themselves. Many homes have running water for just an hour a day. In the cities and towns there are hotels, even resorts, and in the southern Sahara, where the rock art is second to none, organised tours are available.
I never thought of punk rock as the absolute act of rebellion for the sake of rebellion. There’s a lot of that in there, but for me I think punk rock was always about questioning things and making decisions for yourself, which is a great message to pass on to your kids.
This is the rock ‘n’ roll life, and you had to invent it as you went along. There was no textbook to say how you operate this machinery.
To me, punk rock is the freedom to create, freedom to be successful, freedom to not be successful, freedom to be who you are. It’s freedom.
I think that for the highest achievements nowadays… need to have the stable as a rock scientific base. And also need to own modesty.

The Academy Awards ceremony is designed to be without irony, but Chris Rock supplied it anyway with filmed movie-theater interviews with black men and women who had never heard of the movies nominated for Best Picture.
I spent time at my grandfather Dino’s gourmet store where he brought in chefs from Naples to cook. I thought of them as rock stars.
When ‘We Will Rock You,’ the musical, launched, I was amazed at how successful it was. It attracted a new generation of fans. Freddie would have loved it. He was quite into that sort of stuff.

I have Nineties music oozing out of my pores. What made rock & roll back then is that it was uncensored. It was raw and dark. Think of ‘Something in the Way,’ by Nirvana – he was telling everyone how he felt.
