The number of strokes to the inch controls the pitch of the note: the more, the higher the pitch; the fewer, the lower the pitch, the size of the stroke controls the loudness… the tone quality is the most difficult element to control, it is made by the shape of the strokes.
If you’ve got a camera that’s two feet away from you, you have to bring it all back down. It’s a lot more insular. It’s different brush strokes. Whereas on stage, you’re playing to people who, depending on the size of the theater, might be 40 meters away from you.

Chairman Mao not only introduced Pinyin in China, but also simplified half the Chinese characters, believing that fewer strokes would enable more people to learn to write the characters.
