I always enjoyed things that made me laugh. My dad introduced me to ‘Fawlty Towers’ and I loved ‘Crackerjack’ – that was my childhood encapsulated.
The day I was born, my house burnt down; the day I left home, the Twin Towers burnt down; and I lived in a jungle in India at 15.
Authors all have at least one thing in common, which is that when we finally get finished copies of our books, we get giddy as kindergartners. We touch them constantly, and build towers with them, and take pictures of our cats and dogs reading them.
You pass the old L.A. County jail, which is surprisingly beautiful. It’s got a handsome stone facade and stately columns. The new L.A. County jail – called The Twin Towers – isn’t beautiful at all; it’s a stucco panopticon the color of sick flesh.
