The only honourable work my parents knew was blue-collar. But while my father Robert ran a pawnbroker’s shop, and my mother was a waitress, I moved into a middle-class world with a level of security they never knew.
I was known as an activist, described by CBC’s ‘The Fifth Estate’ as ‘the 23-year-old waitress who stopped the pulp company dead in its tracks.’ Without knowing it was even possible, my activism helped me gain admission to Dalhousie University law school.
My life is so different because of ‘Waitress.’ The people that I’m close to, the things I do professionally, my colleagues, my best friend and my boyfriend – like, all of these things have come to me because of the show. And it’s really beautiful.
Don’t move to L.A to become an actress – you’ll just be a waitress. Don’t drive to Nashville to become a country music star – you’ll just end up playing empty honky-tonks at two in the afternoon on a Tuesday.
I wasn’t the best waitress in the world, but I was cheerful and worked hard.
