I think, as a coach, you have to be willing to do what’s best for the player. And you say what’s best for the player: is it better to give him a game suspension, three-game suspension, no suspension. I think each case may be different in that.
I don’t know what being an Everest guide means. I am a coach, not a guide.
People always think they know better. In football, everybody thinks they can be head coach and do it better. It’s the same in F1: they always know better, even if they have no experience of it.
You can never guarantee the wins but you can guarantee that you give it 100%. That way you can always look back and feel comfortable, as a player or a coach.
For some reason the football coach of a major college program is seen as one of the leaders of the campus. And some way we have to let our young people know that that leader can look like anyone.
With all due respect to Coach O’Brien and Coach Godsey, I’ve told them I’m going to be me.
I talked to Grant Hill, and I told him, ‘I played against you a lot, and now, hopefully, I’m getting to coach a player like you. Jabari has the opportunity to be a special player in this league. But it’s not handed to you. He’s going to work, and our jobs are to make him better each day.’
Every college coach I talk to won’t say it on record, but everyone’s thinking, ‘Should I go to the league?’ Because you don’t have the same requirements. It’s different. The hours are different.
So if the players trust the coach, it’s not a problem. If the players don’t trust the coach, it is a problem, and vice versa.
Clearly, there are things a runner does, intentionally or not, that disrupt team cohesion. And there are also things a runner doesn’t do that can cause problems: not trying, showing up late, skipping team-building activities, and ignoring the coach’s instructions.
How can a coach have any influence over a player that’s making over five times more than he is?
When I was in the hospital, everyone was worried for me, and I realised that I had to do something in my life so that people would stop looking at me with pity. I spoke to my elder brother and my coach about climbing the Everest, and they encouraged me.
When I was in university, my dream was to be a coach, like a high school track coach. Not to teach.
If you’ve got a coach that overlooks the problems, then you’ve got problems.
I know there are people who say ‘just coach’… I don’t hear them.
Every camp I do, I’m always trying to figure out how I can help kids get better, so holding the actual title of coach, that doesn’t matter to me. In life, I’m a coach. I think we all are.
I want to thank my mum, my daddy, my coach, my teacher, everybody in my life.
I never, never thought one day I will sing at La Scala or I will get the Grammy. I’m lucky. I work a lot with a teacher, with my coach.
I got to know Coach Wooden at the end of his life.
When you know how the coach ticks and how he wants to play football, it makes the decision easier. But for the main part, I came to England because of the club Manchester United.
I’d tell any coach not to move for money… Stay at your job if you’re really happy.
You cannot compare Pep to any Brazilian coach. If you put all Brazilian coaches together, you would get Pep. One has motivational skills, another is tactically strong. But Pep has it all.
A team takes on the personality of the head coach.
I tell you, it was kind of two-fold. I fortunately had a lot of support. My coach was amazing – he told me to focus on being prepared and that is what I did. Every athlete is nervous – any athlete who tells you they’re not nervous isn’t telling you the truth. I was as prepared as I could be.
For the off-ice training, I do basic strength training, and for the on-ice training, I practice jumps, spins, steps, and my new long program with my new coach Peter Oppegard.
Sometimes, people say, ‘You need to fight smart.’ After a fight gets started I don’t know what happens with me. I feel crazy. A lot of times my coach says, ‘Calm down. Calm.’
Obviously you have to have talent in order to play so you can’t overlook that, but we won’t overlook the character issue when it comes to talent because if they have talent and they don’t have character, it’s going to be very difficult to coach that person.
Nobody gives a crap about hockey down here – nobody. I coach kids’ hockey down here and you can start to see the disinterest in the game here with the kids.
You as an individual coach have a responsibility to try to give those players who put themselves at risk and in harm’s way a chance to achieve success, and that goes for universities and professional teams, as well.
As long as you are successful and winning matches, the language is no problem at all. But when the results are insufficient, the difficulties begin. At this time, a coach needs to go into more detail with his instructions, and that’s where the problems can lie.
My dad was my Little League coach and my Cub Master.
I was very lucky with ‘Soap’ and ‘Who’s the Boss,’ which was great fun, and then went on ‘Coach’ and ‘Everybody Loves Raymond.’ I’ve been truly blessed, and the work has all been fun and a joy.
The job as a coach is difficult.
I believe in believing. My coach John Kavanagh is a big atheist, and he is always trying to persuade people to his way of thinking, and I think, ‘What a waste of energy.’ If people want to believe in this god or that god, that’s fine by me; believe away. But I think we can be our own gods. I believe in myself.
My mom was one of the original designers for Coach in the eighties, and she designed some classics, including the City Bag. It’s the only bag I use!
I don’t think about becoming a head coach. I really don’t. I’m not oblivious of people who mention it. When you are in any business, people expect to aspire to the top. I guess everyone is supposed to aspire to being the man at the top of the heap. But I never have.
If you have time to be with a dog, and the dog is smart, you come to understand the dog, and the dog understands you. They’re not hard to train. But they have to be smart, and you have to spend time with them. It’s like coaching. I was a better coach when I had smart players.
As a coach, one thing that used to frustrate me was one player would make a bad decision, and that’s all you would read about in the papers all over the country. We have so many athletes do so many wonderful things for other people, and you never read about it.
When you start the game, coaches will tell you to do stuff in a particular way, and kids do that. But the moment you start first-class cricket, the coach needs to tell you, ‘Try this, try that,’ instead of, ‘Do this, do that.’ If you feel comfortable, you can take it; otherwise, leave it.
Will I become a coach in the future? No way. I’d never be able to put up with someone like me.
Klopp is a great tactician and a great coach.
As a coach, I am committed to not only developing well-rounded athletes but also good human beings.

For me, being a top coach means more than just teaching football. That includes empathy, it means that you can speak to a group, that you can deal with the media – you have to be able to do all of that. I would not describe myself as blind in this regard, but a top coach also includes titles.
Regarding Jose Mourinho, I hope I can learn a lot from him – he is a coach with a fantastic record.
I had played in a tournament with the captain of the University of Minnesota’s golf team, and he thought I was good. He called his coach, and the coach called me and recruited me. A five-minute phone call changed my life.
I always work with a coach. That’s just a personal thing that I like to do. During interviews, you’ll hear more of my accent, and I’ll stress the wrong words.
If I were a high school coach, I would put my best players on offense. The best athletes on my team, I would give them the ball and score points. I wouldn’t play them on defense. I would play them where they can get the ball and score points.
If you take golf, you have a teacher for the drive, a teacher for the approach play, and a teacher for the putt. That’s three specialist coaches for one player. In football, one coach looks after 25 players.
My first and only experience in baseball, the coach signed me up; he didn’t tell me there’s a thing called the curveball. I didn’t know that. So the ball’s coming at me and I start backing out, and then it broke inside. And the umpire says, ‘Strike one!’ And I’m saying, ‘How is that a strike? It almost hit me!’
I coach a few guys and they work very, very hard, but in our day we did it because we just loved it.
I’ll always be a fan of coach Harbaugh. Not too sure about Michigan.
In 1996, I was the head coach at Brigham Young University. And I got a call from my dad, and he said my brother had been murdered by du Pont. And it just infuriated me to just no end. And I think I destroyed everything in my office.
I’m not really a big X’s and O’s guy, but if you want to go there, I’m more of a space-the-floor type of coach: Five out, zero in, and that’s the way we play basketball, screen and roll here and there, pocket passes everywhere; it’s what it’s about.
