When I come up with a melody in my head, it could be anywhere: in the shower, on the plane, in bed – often when I’m on the go. I’ll record it on my phone with my own voice, humming. When I get to the studio, I check which melodies work.
With all the negativity going on in the world right now, people need an escape. When you give them a hit record or a great record, it allows them to escape for at least three to four minutes. They’re not thinking bills or economy or immigration or war when you create that kind of ambiance.

It’s not like I’m taking 20 grand from the shows. I mean there’s no record label, so this is a genuine thing. And I think most people can see that. I think that anyone who knows me, knows I do things with integrity.
If there’s going to be another Misfits record, I’d probably have to write the stuff.
My musical background is like almost every non classical musician in the world. One day a special record was heard and that was it. I was hooked, started trying to play various instruments and was off to bar land to become a rock star. What else?
What is there to be afraid of? The worst thing that can happen is you fail. So what? I failed at a lot of things. My first record was horrible.
I’m a record producer and songwriter; I’m a problem-solver.
Puffy’s contribution to hip-hop culture was the remix. He offered us the music that his mom played in front of him, with newer drums and younger artists. That worked, and will consistently be there. The remix comes right after the original record, that’s something Puffy did to influence the culture.
I talked to the record company about what I had in mind. They said they wanted something lush. I figured the best thing to do was let them hear what I had in mind.

I should be the one to say what I do. It’s just not done that way anymore in Nashville, and I can’t do it the other way. That’s how our record label came about.

Something is better than nothing. Doin’ anything for a man, there’s investments involved, there’s time and production. It’s better to give him ten bucks and get a record out than to never record the cat.
Even though we didn’t actually record it as the Move I had already written a song called ‘Dear Elaine’, which I subsequently put on the Boulders album. I thought at the time that was probably the best song I’d written.

What I noticed, in the short time I’ve been in Chickenfoot, we wound up doing a tour and a live DVD with basically that scoop sound. I was using OD2 for that entire tour. When we went out on this new tour and made the new record, I used the amp in an entirely different way. It was already modified.
Just for the record, I personally do agree with some of the sentiments of Rabbi Meir Kahane. I think he was right about certain things, wrong about other things, but I have absolutely nothing, no association whatsoever with Kahane Chai leaders.

When we look out into space, we’re looking back in time; the light from a galaxy a billion light-years away, for instance, will take a billion years to reach us. It’s an amazing thing. My first record I owned was by Les Paul.
‘State’ can be a word that is a noun or a verb or an adverb – it’s kind of why I chose that title. It’s not to confound the audience but to keep me from painting myself into a cul-de-sac in the early stages of making a record by having too high concept or having some really strict set of rules I have to adhere to.
If we just sit and exist, and understand that, I think it will be helpful in a world that seems like a record that’s going faster and faster, we’re spinning off the edge of the universe.
