I think baseball represents something closer to our experience. There’s no clock in baseball; it’s not over until it’s over. It’s like life in that there are prolonged periods of boredom and monotony, punctuated by intense moments of excitement and sometimes terror.
I have a very low tolerance for boredom and often think I would have missed out on books entirely if I’d grown up in the Internet and video game age. Now I enjoy books for people of all ages, including children.
For many of us, eating has surprisingly little to do with hunger. We eat out of boredom, for entertainment, to comfort or reward ourselves. Try to be aware of why you’re eating, and ask yourself if you’re really hungry – before you eat and then again along the way.
