If you look at American medical fiction written by doctors, like ‘The House of God’ by Samuel Shem and ‘The Blood of Strangers’ by Frank Huyler, both have themes of cynicism and dysfunction running through them that you won’t find in ‘ER.’ You find it in ‘Scrubs,’ but because that’s a comedy, it gets away with it.
I wasn’t thrilled about ‘The Sound Of Music’ – not the movie itself but my role in it. Captain Von Trapp was a bore, and they tried to help by giving it a bit more cynicism, but it wasn’t my favourite role. I enjoyed the music, and I loved Julie Andrews.
Conversely, conservatives assume that humans are fundamentally lazy and prone to immorality. In this view, the entitlement system coddles and rewards laziness. This cynicism spills over into their view of government and government ‘bureaucrats.’ It also spills over into their political tactics.
You know what the critics are. If you tell the truth they only say you’re cynical and it does an author no good to get a reputation for cynicism.
A deep cynicism is taking hold of the country, with more and more Americans convinced that big money calls the shots in Washington and that there is nothing that can be done about it. We must resist that conclusion and fight back on behalf of everyday citizens. Reform is possible, and it is imperative.

Created by writer Beau Willimon, who’s worked on several political campaigns, ‘House of Cards’ cannily exploits the current widespread cynicism for our politics, catering to a public scorn that’s warranted and also glib in the sort of cheap pox-on-both-houses way that means not having to pay attention.
In my opinion I think there’s a difference between skepticism and cynicism; I tend to avoid cynicism because I feel it can err sometimes on the side of ignorance, by just disregarding something without actually seeing it or experiencing it first-hand.
