I try and create choreography that’s in conversation with the music that the audience is hearing.
I’ll never forget the dance number that I shot with Anushka. The choreography involved a lot of intricate dance moves. I’m at least 7 inches shorter than Anushka, so I had to wear the highest heels I’ve ever worn in my life; throughout the song, I even injured my knee a couple of times.
When I finally decided to do the show, I only had two weeks to learn the choreography and the songs in French.
For me, the choreography always comes from the music.
A successful shrimp boil requires layering ingredients into the pot so that everything is done cooking at once. A carefully timed choreography dictates the order in which ingredients are added to ensure no one has to eat raw potatoes or chewy shrimp.

I had certain physical limitations that made me change the choreography for myself or made me more interested in choreography only rather than dancing. I have never been a person who wanted to just dance. I have always been interested in developing for other people.
I think every partner in every situation is completely different and I think you have to adjust your teaching technique, your choreography and how you’re going to approach the season in general.
We know how hard we’ve worked, we know how our choreography makes us feel empowered. We have our voices, which are incredible and kind of surpass anything else.
I never planned to become a dancer, but I became one. The same thing happened with acting and direction. I remember I was doing the choreography of a film, and the producer came and offered me to direct the film. It was in Telugu, and that is how it started.
I was in a play directed by my father, and I was doing a fight scene, and the choreography went haywire, and I flew backward over a chair and ripped my thumb all the way to my wrist and had to have surgery to sew up all the tendons in there.
To make it more familiar to me, I ended up treating my swordplay scenes like choreography. So it was, ‘One and two and three and four and five, and turn and step and down and up and lunge.’
I said, ‘I’ll give myself two years. If I can’t support myself as an actress within two years, then I’ll go back to choreography.’
The age of the rock star ended with the passing of physical product, the rise of automated percussion, the domination of the committee approach to hit-making, the widespread adoption of choreography, and, above all, the advent of the mystique-destroying Internet.
I realize that I’m not a great dancer. I’ve given up the hip-shaking. I don’t pelvic thrust anymore. Those were the beginning days of T. R. learning how to dance. But I love it, and I’ve taken a few choreography lessons. But other than that, I kinda just feel it, I guess.
When it comes to choreography practice, the rest of the five members learn from the dance instructor while Rap Monster and I are excluded from the group and end up learning the moves in the corner.

The idea of directing my own movie is definitely more challenging than choreography.
Choreography is mentally draining, but there’s a pleasure in getting into the studio with the dancers and the music.
Sometimes I’ll watch a music video of a great performer like Beyonce and try to follow her choreography. Yeah, maybe I look ridiculous, but dancing gets your energy up a lot better than running on a treadmill or pedaling a stationary bike.
I was more of a dancer back then, I did choreography, but I was nothing like ‘Powerline’.
Conductors must give unmistakable and suggestive signals to the orchestra – not choreography to the audience.
Fight choreography has far more in common with dance choreography than it does with actual martial arts. You learn martial arts techniques, but those are just the movements for the choreography. You’re working with a partner in choreography. You’re working on timing.
I think our choreography, which is easy to follow, played a huge role in achieving fame in Japan.
There’s nobody knows more about dancing and choreography than Arlene Phillips, ever.
I love movies and there’s something close to me about James Dean – I always wanted to do choreography on him.
Without my husband’s costumes I wouldn’t have known how to accomplish what I saw in my own mind’s eyes for choreography. And then seeing our choreography and knowing the background of it I am sure helped my husband a great deal with what he designed for us.
I wanted to be a professional dancer for a period of time, and I did a lot of dancing and choreography and got paid for it.
I couldn’t pick up a sword and go fight anyone, let me put it that way. It’s choreography and it’s acting. The best sword fights you see look amazing, but it’s the acting that sells it more than anything.
When I got to know about techniques, I realised there’s a lot more to dancing than Bollywood. Till then, I had thought choreography simply meant doing your own steps.
There are some ballets you can do for a long time. With others, you have to know when to stop. Some are very destructive. Forsythe’s choreography pushes dancers to the extreme. That’s why it’s best to vary. That way, you break your body a little bit in different places, but not a lot in one place.
Intimate scenes are like dance rehearsals – it’s all choreography.
I wish I could blame it on the choreography, but it’s not a musical. I just had a clumsy moment.

Choreography is writing on your feet.
Dance has helped me with everything. It was a great foundation for discipline, hard work and, unfortunately, the ever-elusive idea of perfection. It lends itself easily to fight choreography, because that’s what it really is. Choreography. And knowing how to move with someone.
My philosophy on choreography is that the making of a ballet is a team effort, and we’re in this together. It’s not me hammering on them. It’s more about how we can elevate this piece collectively to something great.
I always thought martial arts was the most modern choreography we could have right now, and I always wanted to put it to music.
I have always loved contemporary dance, but it has always been a bit of a mystery to me. But choreography is very much like what I do when you are putting characters in frame on the page. It’s so impressive what they do with their bodies. It’s like painting: an abstraction.
I think, as a choreographer and an action designer, you’re constantly giving your characters problems to overcome. That’s what makes it fun for choreography. But it also makes it fun for the audience to see them solve those puzzles and how they are as a human being.

Most people say that Asian or female artists should be sexy in America, but I don’t think that I have to be like that. I have a tomboy style. My choreography is not that way. So, I want to focus on my music style to match the choreography, which is really cool. No girls can dance those moves. I try to make them really fresh.
