‘Pearl Harbor’ is definitely about December 7, 1941, but it is not of December 7, 1941. It’s not even really of our age, either. It has more of the feel of a film from, roughly, mid-war.
We’re charging what we’re worth and we don’t think we’re worth $22.50. We take a lower cut than Pearl Jam.
The first time I saw Pearl Jam, I thought Eddie Vedder had seen too many Jim Morrison videos, and I didn’t like the music very much. But by the third album, I really liked them after all.
Real friendship, like real poetry, is extremely rare – and precious as a pearl.

9/11 changed America fundamentally, far more so than outsiders realised at the time. For Americans, it genuinely was a new Pearl Harbour: an attack on the homeland that made them feel vulnerable for the first time in 60 years.
We’re in greater danger today than we were the day after Pearl Harbor. Our military is absolutely incapable of defending this country.
As long as ‘Pearl Harbor’ stays in the past, it’s perfect; when it wretchedly changes gears in the late going, it becomes the wrong kind of same old story: Hollywood stupidity and callowness, writ large across the sky.

I developed my training routine going into my senior year at Jackson State. I found this sandbank by the Pearl River near my hometown, Columbia, Miss. I laid out a course of 65 yards or so. Sixty-five yards on sand is like 120 on turf, but running on sand helps you make your cuts at full speed.
On December 5, 1941, Chicago led a task force built around the carrier Lexington to Midway Island, at the western end of the Hawaiian Islands, about 1,000 miles from Pearl Harbor.
We may take breaks and do other things, but we feel we’ll ultimately have Pearl Jam as a family.

History demonstrates that previous military drawdowns invited aggression by our enemies. After World War I, America drew down forces until the U.S. Army had fewer than 100,000 men in uniform. That weakness invited Nazi aggression in Europe and the imperial Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor.
Until the attack on Pearl Harbor, isolationism was an important, even dominant strand in U.S. politics. After the Second World War, this strand disappeared, smothered by the widespread and bipartisan conviction that the United States needed to stay engaged with the world to prevent future crises.
Like the attack on Pearl Harbor, another hinge event in American history, 9/11 was a great tactical victory for America’s enemies. But in both these cases, the tactical success of the attacks was not matched by strategic victories. Quite the reverse.
At a show, I’ll look out from the stage and see a woman with a pearl necklace next to a guy in a Grateful Dead T-shirt next to a young kid with his mom. It’s fun to see them all together.
For memory, we use our imagination. We take a few strands of real time and carry them with us, then like an oyster we create a pearl around them.

After Mad Season, I started writing my own music for Pearl Jam and brought it in. ‘Given To Fly’ came out of that, and so did ‘Faithful’ – those were on ‘Yield,’ which came after Mad Season.

I idolised bands like Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, who wanted to reach as many people as they could.

When we’re not doing any Pearl Jam stuff, that’s when I’ll probably think of doing something else, whether that be scoring – hopefully more opportunities will come – or doing a solo thing.
When reflecting upon it today, that the Pearl Harbor attack should have succeeded in achieving surprise seems a blessing from Heaven. It was clear that a great American fleet had been concentrated in Pearl Harbor, and we supposed that the state of alert would be very high.
Every prop, every shot, every pearl that rolled across the floor was exactly how I wanted it to be.
