Ultimately, our ideas about robots are not about robots. The robot is a canvas onto which we project our hopes and our dreams and our fears… they become embodiments of those hopes and dreams and fears.
I can’t pretend I’m some robot that’s always neutral. I need to share my opinion – and sometimes aggressively so.
Everybody’s out there wrestling like a robot.
On ‘Mr. Robot,’ because I run the writers’ room and know every decision behind every line of dialogue, I’m able to be nimble and adapt with the scripts and the moments. I never have to question what I’m doing as I’m directing the actors or going through the scenes.
In the future, when Microsoft leaves a security-flaw in their code it won’t mean that somebody hacks your computer. It will mean that somebody takes control of your servant robot and it stands in your bedroom doorway sharpening a knife and watching you sleep.
An athlete is not a robot, not a machine. Wellbeing of athletes is absolute necessary.
There was a pizza delivery robot from 2008, where I built a Prius to deliver pizza from downtown SF to Treasure Island.
I couldn’t think of anything more pointless than reading a piece of fiction written by a robot.
Human communication above and beyond the words that we say is so nuanced. It makes it difficult to not only analyze the vocabulary you use but the intention behind it. That’s something even humans have difficulty doing, let alone a robot.
You probably found ‘How to Survive a Robot Uprising’ in the humor section. Let’s just hope that is where it belongs.
My odyssey to become an astronaut kind of started in grad school, and I was working, up at MIT, in space robotics-related work; human and robot working together.
We wanted to solve robot problems and needed some vision, action, reasoning, planning, and so forth. We even used some structural learning, such as was being explored by Patrick Winston.
The most important thing for building a robot that you can interact with socially is its visual attention system. Because what it pays attention to is what it’s seeing and interacting with, and what you’re understanding what it’s doing.
Thank you… motion sensor hand towel machine. You never work, so I just end up looking like I’m waving hello to a wall robot.
When I started thinking about ‘Mr. Robot,’ I thought about it as a movie, and I thought about the complete arc, and that is the one story I’m going to tell.
If I’m going to give someone advice on what to buy, you want a personality to back it up rather than some robot telling you X is better than Y.
I would do it today because the thing that appealed to me was not necessarily the mechanics of the robot, but it was his personality and how funny and charming he was.
The idea of old world instruments mixed with sci-fi, futuristic lyrics, playing baroque guitar on a song about a robot boy and a banjo solo on a song about white noise – that’s our sense of humor.
We are going to have to have different ethics for different artificially intelligent machines. You obviously want a different set of ethics for a military artificially intelligent machine or robot than you have for a care-taking robot.
I am not a robot. I have a heart and I bleed.
I got a phone call from Jon Favreau saying, ‘I need the voice of a personality-less robot, and I thought of you immediately.’ I thought that was the funniest thing I ever heard, so I said, ‘Yes.’
You could claim that moving from pixelated perception, where the robot looks at sensor data, to understanding and predicting the environment is a Holy Grail of artificial intelligence.
I’m such a robot when it comes to work.
It shouldn’t be easier for a company to get a tax break on buying another robot than training their employees to gain new skills for the modern economy.
Then during the mission itself, I used the space shuttle’s robot arm to release a satellite into orbit.
People thrive on genuine connections – not with machines, but with each other. You don’t want a robot taking care of your baby; an ailing elder needs to be loved, to be listened to, fed, and sung to. This is one job category that people are – and will continue to be – best at.
I have often thought of doing a story with someone either as a human being or as a robot who, by a series of stages, changes into the other end of the spectrum. By the story’s end, he’d be either totally robotic or totally human, the opposite of what he once was. And possibly… bring him back again.
I think definitely ‘Robot 2’ is a milestone in my career.
I get to delve into some of the most creative experience I’ve had as an actor on ‘Mr. Robot.’ I think there’s a wide opportunity for actors to do that now more so than ever on television.
I think that if journalists, reporters who spend a lot of time on a story, are honest with themselves, we all have feelings about our subjects – I mean, unless you’re a robot.
Playing a robot is possibly the most difficult role you can have as an actor, because you have to take all your innate emotional responses and completely suppress them. Even the way you walk is affected.
What did everyone think robot vacuuming was going to be? Well, they think Rosie the Robot from ‘The Jetsons,’ a human robot that pushed a vacuum. That was never going to happen.
Whatever you may be thinking when you apply for a job today, you can be sure the employer is asking this: Can this person add value every hour, every day – more than a worker in India, a robot or a computer? Can he or she help my company adapt by not only doing the job today but also reinventing the job for tomorrow?
I just like showing people – and this might be at the root of everything that I’ve done – that I don’t want to be looked at as a baseball robot.
I do think, in time, people will have, sort of, relationships with certain kinds of robots – not every robot, but certain kinds of robots – where they might feel that it is a sort of friendship, but it’s going to be of a robot-human kind.
At the end of October 4 in 1957, when I was coming back from sea duty in the South Pacific, Sputnik went up. I realized that humans would be right behind robot aircraft or spacecraft even though I really had no plans of being in aviation or a professional aviator and certainly not in the military.
‘Mr. Robot’ has made me so much more aware of everything. I have to think about it.
The last thing I want my robot to be is sarcastic. I want them to be pragmatic and reliable – just like my dishwasher.

I also know that in the second movie, the sequel, Eric made some huge advances with the robot suit. That just made it even better. You put the suit on and moved your arms then the robot’s arms would move in sync with yours.
I’m only a human being. I’m not a robot.
Generally, studios are adverse to making films about war in the Middle East. They’d much rather make a film with a superhero or an alien or a robot.

I think I am the same kind of person I would have been if I wasn’t an actor. I am not a robot.
Sci-fi fans are the best fans you can have. You could be doing the worst piece of tat which might have a robot or vampire in, and some people will become obsessed by it and know every little detail. ‘Being Human’ has crossed over from sci-fi fans to being a drama that everyone can enjoy.
Most American films have now become mindless. The human element has been removed, so you are just left with the surrogate human, which is the robot, so coincidentally or, rather, ironically, they are making films about robots, without realising they are talking about themselves.
As blessed as I am, I clearly was not born with the twerking gene. It’s safe to say that I won’t be winning a twerking contest anytime soon. The robot on the other hand is a different story.
I feel people think I’m almost like a robot – like an android… I just don’t really get portrayed as someone who has feelings or who is sympathetic… like a self-absorbed ice queen.
If I had a robot friend, he or she would be electric.
The name iRobot comes from ‘Internet-connected robot.’
If you ask the typical two- or three-year-old or a teenager what a robot is, they will think about a humanoid that does my homework for me or walks the dog. When I go and talk to kids and pull out the Roomba, it’s not this big ‘Wow!’ moment.
I’ve done a few face palms after things I’ve said because it’s stupid. But if I’m not like that, I won’t feel human anymore. I’ll just feel like some robot saying what I’m supposed to say. I think that’s when people lose it.
We will not have humanoid androids. It’s interesting: when you start trying to make robots look more human, you end up making them look more grotesque. It takes very little to go from super-attractive robot to hideous robot.
Building robot versions of people is very expensive.
Knowing how to keep someone motivated and how to keep a connection are skills humans have learned and evolved over hundreds of thousands of years. A robot can’t figure out whether you can do one more push-up, or how to motivate you to actually do it.
