I have to finish this book tour of almost 30 cities.
I’ve always thought that travelling every day as a journalist on the Tour’s got to be harder than actually racing.
‘Grand Royal’ started because we were on the Lollapalooza tour, and we wanted to send this message to people that the mosh pit is corny. Stop doing that. MTV has ruined it, and it’s dangerous, and girls are getting hurt.
On tour, it’s either call ex-boyfriends or tweet a lot. You’re just looking for any proof that you’re not completely alone.
The best compliment I get every year is that a band will write me and say, ‘We were just on tour, and we had people coming to our show saying they had never heard us before they heard us on your show.’
Performing is the craziest workout for me, because I feel like, on the first day of tour, I’m going nuts. Halfway through, I’m just so tired but obviously you keep pushing yourself because you have fans watching you.
I used to be an over-packer! It took me a while to be smart about what I brought with me. I used to tour with a huge bag full of clothes and another one full of shoes because I wanted to have choices. And I ended up wearing the same pair of shoes all the time!
I’m a big fan of Kid Cudi. He was, like, the only concert I think I went to as a kid. He was on tour with Asher Roth.
I’m not one for Sudoku or crosswords – the thing that fires my little brain is doing tour budgets.
I think ‘Amazing Race’ is sometimes like being on tour.
I love touring. I can’t wait. Everything is just normal when you’re finally on tour. I think, for me, it’s my happiest thing; I love moving around, and I have friends and family all over the place. It’s kind of my time. It’s almost like home. It’s when I get to see everybody.
We want to stay on this tour bus together as long as we possibly can. I’m sure a lot of bands are like, ‘I need my own space.’ But we don’t. I want to be with these guys forever.
I just saw Jensen the other day. They are gonna be in the States at the same time when we are doing the tour, Se we’ll see if we are going to see somewhere.
The Singapore Open is the flagship event of the Asian Tour, it is a massive event and it is being played in a great place. I love coming here and it is good to be back.
I’ve always said it: I don’t want to be the only Columbian playing on the PGA Tour, so, guys, just play some good golf and come join me here.
If we went to the Tour, I’d have to think, what would our purpose be? Would it be to win the Tour de France? I’m not sure I want that pressure.
Usually, when we go out, it’s because we made a new studio album, and that becomes the focus of the tour throughout the world for a year or so.
On tour, I’ll get up at 5 p.m. and go to bed at 8 in the morning. With fishing, it’s the exact opposite. Fishing is the only healthy thing I do. Touring is such a grind; it’s the opposite of healthy.
If it wasn’t good, I wouldn’t be going back out on tour.
This moment in time, on this tour, you know, I’m discovering a lot of new things. And to be 45 and doing that, it’s a mixture of pleasure and pain, I can assure you.
A typical day for me on tour is a marathon – it’s like five days rolled into one.
We’ve had a lot of agencies try and sabotage our tour.
We each have our own tour bus. We’ve never done that before.
Whenever I approach a record, I don’t really have a science to it. I approach every record differently. First record was in a home studio. Second record was a live record. Third record was made while I was on tour. Fourth record was made over the course of, like, two years in David Kahn’s basement.
You will never see the four original Pumpkins on stage ever again, unless it’s a Hall of Fame thing. But you would never see a tour. There’s so much damage, there’s no way.
Keep in mind that if you take a tour through a hospital and look at every machine with on and off switch that is brought into the service of diagnosing the human condition, that machine is based on principles of physics discovered by a physicist in a machine designed by an engineer.
When I was a child, all I wanted was to enter the Austrian team and to compete on the World Cup tour. I had to fight hard to reach this. I wanted badly to win each race.
I’d love to follow the Tour de France one day. It’s a really exciting spectacle. I’ve only seen it once as it was coming into Paris and that was very exciting for me. I have memories of that.
The reason I don’t tour is that I don’t know how to front a band. What would I do? I can’t really play anything well enough to deal with that situation.
It’s all well and good having a women’s Tour de France – which I think we need and I think we should have. But I think we should slowly build it in and not just go ‘Bam!’ with three weeks over the same course and same length of time as the men’s.
It helps when 1 can send the children off to their fathers so I can support my new book with a national publicity tour. I started writing the book when my daughter was 5. It took me almost four years.
Final pairing on Sunday in a PGA Tour event? If you can’t get up for that, you better find something else to do.
Luckily I don’t have to buy shoes anymore, because I design them! I’m off tour, so I can dive in and create the shoes that I want for my line. But okay, I did buy a pair of vintage combat boots because they were so beaten up – I had to have them.
I’ve studied live shows and artists for so long. I got the tour documentaries and all that and watched them. I love a show. I love an artist that can do all of it.
The other thing that was very noticeable on that tour, not so much in the video, was the new young element that were coming to our shows… I started to see some very young people in the audience… maybe 14, 15, 16 years old.
I feel sometimes like a book tour is a slow series of humiliations and that if you’re strong you’ll come out of it OK.
I’ve gotten to go to the Opry a couple of times and stand backstage and watch. But I made it a point not to take a tour or stand in the circle until music took me there. I told myself that was one place I’d never go unless music took me there.
I have a life coach out with me on tour, a very nice guy from L.A. He just prepares me for each day.
I just like really simple things. If I had been on tour for a while and I got to come back and take my girlfriend Eleanor on a date, we would go to the cinema and then out for dinner.
I plan my golf outfits for the tournaments, I recycle some for the practice rounds, but I always have new ideas for my golf attire, and I like to dress nice after the rounds, so I have to bring all my heels. It’s terrible. The worst part about being on tour is living out of a suitcase.
Because, first of all, we were becoming aware during that tour that there was a group of people that was following the band around, and they weren’t interested in coming in to the shows, they were just interested in hangin’ out outside and tryin’ to break in.
I started flying because I had a fear of it early on. I figured if I learned to fly, I would understand better what was happening and started taking lessons in the late 1950’s, once I had made some money on tour.
Well, in the sense that we do not tour or record together anymore – then I suppose not. But if our old recordings get heard more we shall be delighted.
Animals play a big part in my life, on tour or at home.
I was fortunate to have teachers that were flexible with allowing me to miss more class than I was supposed to be able to, for the sake of being able to tour.
A band asked me to go on tour when I was 22 and asked me to play drums, and I taught myself so I could go on this trip with these people. The drums found me; I didn’t find them. When I started playing, I realized how appropriate an instrument it was for me.
I cannot believe that I get a tour bus. I’ve been traveling in a van for 15 years. I used to look at people who were on buses and be like, ‘Whoa, man, some day.’
I tour all year, 42 weeks a year, so it’s hard for me to remember every place I play.
L.A. is a really good home base. I’ve grown up here, and so sometimes I have wanderlust even though I tour. You think it would be cured by touring, but sometimes I feel like I want to be somewhere else.
I don’t know that I’ve ever been someone who’s interested in existing on tour. I have a lot of interests and a lot of other things that excite me.
Mine’s going to be the best book tour that ever happened!
The best part about winning the PGA is getting great pairings at tour events. It’s fun to play with Phil Mickelson and other past major champions.
Having been on tour in countries that are extremely eco-friendly, we automatically end up doing the things that normal people do in other countries.
I played with Prince in 2010… the America tour. The one with Misty Copeland dancing on top of the piano! But Prince played the piano on that song. But I played two dates with him on that tour. When we played the gig, every couple of songs, Prince would change his clothes.
As a kid, I watched every Madonna documentary and tour. I was obsessed with her – and with any pop star of the ’80s.
If you had told me at 45 years old that I would have to go on tour to get rest, I would’ve said, ‘That’s not how it works.’ But nothing can be more gratifying. I’m a very hands-on dad.
