What gets posted online is not short term, and is open for easy misinterpretation. Messages and pictures spread faster through the Internet than they ever could by word of mouth.
History is a gallery of pictures in which there are few originals and many copies.
That’s the thing about pictures: they seduce you.
Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good plays, good company, good conversation – what are they? They are the happiest people in the world.
Words and pictures can work together to communicate more powerfully than either alone.
Somebody had given me a copy of ‘Hunky Dory,’ which had yet to be a hit, although it was starting to percolate. I’d seen a couple of pictures of David, with his interesting hairdo and outfits, and I decided to seek him out, which wasn’t difficult back then, as he was eager to do any kind of publicity.
It was the winter of war, in 1939. It felt completely pointless to try to create pictures… I suddenly felt an urge to write down something that was to begin with ‘Once upon a time.’
Know what the old masters did. Know how they composed their pictures, but do not fall into the conventions they established. These conventions were right for them, and they are wonderful. They made their language. You make yours. All the past can help you.
I think when you’re young and have that first burst of energy and make five or six pictures in a row that tell the stories of all the things in life you want to say… well, maybe those are the films that should have won me the Oscar.
Interestingly, when I look at pictures of me when I was five or six years old, I think I look pretty stylish.
Making books is a very specific kind of activity. It’s not really a collection of your best pictures – although it is – but it’s also a way of presenting your work so that it’s not repetitive, so that it flows, and so that it makes sense in a book.
The more pictures you see, the better you are as a photographer.
The art of motion pictures is pictorial and language comes a distant second.
4chan is a framework of pictures and text. I’ve always been extremely hands-off with dictating what gets posted, past general categories and rules. I support providing a place to discuss anything, although I don’t agree with everything that’s posted.
In all our pictures, we had an antagonist who becomes the good guy, and the underdog fulfills his quest.
I sort of got into Westerns… It was a sort of desperation move, really. I had several pictures that didn’t go very well, and I just realised that I would have to try something else.
We’re trying to get good pictures. Don’t worry very much about what I say.
I have always had strong maternal instincts. Even when I was still a child I cut out pictures of prams from newspapers and imagined the feeling of pushing my own pram through fresh winter snow and seeing the wheels’ tracks behind me in the snow.
Everybody has their thing they like or don’t like to see. It’s all in your head. That’s why people take their own pictures, because it’s difficult for someone else to capture what you seek.
The first two pictures I did, I played a young student in prep school. When I did Lifeguard, everyone was saying, You’re so Southern California. It was a surprise to me.
Digital photography and Photoshop have made it very easy for people to take pictures. It’s a medium that allows a lot of mediocre stuff to get through.
In those simpler days, you could just take pictures of movie stars and show them the way they were, as normal human beings. And if I felt part of any movement at the time, it was just to do that – to be journalistic and photograph what is, rather than what is made up.
I didn’t try and do fashion pictures. I tried to do portraits of girls wearing dresses.
My mother always kept library books in the house, and one rainy Sunday afternoon – this was before television, and we didn’t even have a radio – I picked up a book to look at the pictures and discovered I was reading and enjoying what I read.
I think that televisions are unnecessarily complex. The irony is that as the pictures get better and the choice of content gets broader, that the complexity of the experience of using the television gets more and more complicated.
I live intimately with my characters before starting a book. I cut out pictures of them for my wall. I do time lines for each major character and a time line for the entire novel: What is going on in the world as my characters struggle with their problems?
Words are but pictures of our thoughts.
I hate it when people come up to me on trains and ask ‘Are you Soulja Boy?’ If people want pictures or autographs, that’s cool, but I don’t like the dumb questions.
I had done 25 motion pictures prior to The Partridge Family and nobody knew my name.
If you take the ’70s with Blaxploitation pictures, there was a proliferation of black-content films and motion pictures, television, stage plays and so forth at a time when Hollywood was in trouble financially, and it was cheaper to do black films to keep the lights on until they could reestablish themselves.
That was Embassy Pictures, they went bankrupt shortly after This is Spinal Tap came out.
The Chavez-Obama pictures will join a postmodern photo array that includes Donald Rumsfeld gifting Saddam Hussein with spurs from President Reagan.
I can paint pictures, but I cannot rule men.
Hollywood, what a place it is! It is so far away from the rest of the world, so narrow. No one thinks of anything but motion pictures or talks of anything else.
Statues and pictures and verse may be grand, But they are not the Life for which they stand.
We don’t have titles on our business cards. No one really gets any special treatment. No one gets a corner office to put pictures of their family and their dog in.
We do have pictures on the wall, in our office in Belfast where we spend half our time. All the head shots are on the wall. So yeah, we just throw darts at the ones we don’t want anymore.
If you see everything through the lens, you are constantly composing pictures. I think in pictures; I don’t think in text.
I really did put up all my wedding pictures on my website. And I swear to you, my wedding pictures got downloaded just as much as my bikini pictures.
Picture books are for everybody at any age, not books to be left behind as we grow older. The best ones leave a tantalising gap between the pictures and the words, a gap that is filled by the reader’s imagination, adding so much to the excitement of reading a book.
Pictures get manipulated, pictures get dropped into accounts. We’ve asked an internet security firm and a law firm to take a hard look at this to come up with a conclusion about what happened and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
I don’t even know who that person was in the ’80s. I see pictures of myself from back then and I don’t even recognize myself.
I sometimes like the pictures photographers take of me.
One of my passions is photography. I always carry a camera in my bag whenever I travel. I always take pictures wherever I go, and some of them end up being really crazy ones.
The doors between the old man today and the child are still open, wide open. I can stroll through my grandmother’s house and know exactly where the pictures are, the furniture was, how it looked, the voice, the smells. I can move from my bed at night today to my childhood in less than a second.
I paint pictures with my raps.
The John Ford pictures I made are highly regarded, but at the time they didn’t seem like that.
Video is a funny thing. It’s one thing to be an artist, singer-songwriter, and use words and create pictures in people’s minds. And then be asked to do video for it, to actually give a certain visual for your song.

If you want to make pictures and enjoy making them, you better go out and make something that a lot of people want to see. And then they’ll turn you lose and let you make what you want. And then maybe you can do some of the things that you want to do. But as a beginner, you haven’t got a chance.
I used to work at NASA in Virginia. It was nothing glamorous; I was just tasked with making code compile for obscure projects, and I wasn’t very good at it. Now I spend most of my time drawing pictures and looking at funny things on the Internet, which in retrospect is largely what I did at my old job, too.
My memory of those places is better than my pictures. That’s why I get much more satisfaction out of shooting thematic work that has to do with an idea that I’m searching for, or searching to express.
I have a lot of friends and fans in Canada and as a matter of fact I met a fan from there that came down to my office. It was nice and we took pictures and had a nice talk.
