When I was young, I was supposed to study in the afternoon, and 4 – 5:30 P.M. was playtime. The entire day would revolve around that time. We would play anything – kabaddi, cricket. Those one and half hours would feel like 5 minutes.
As a little girl growing up in Southside Jamaica Queens, if anyone would’ve told me I’d have my own perfume one day, and be able to inspire young black girls everywhere, to go into Macy’s or Nordstrom’s and see their face staring back at them – I wouldn’t believe them.
Young love is wild and outrageous, laughing at moderation and blinding us to common sense.
Being a young parent, you can play cricket, football, and I can play chess with my son. In fact, he plays the piano better than I do.
I think for a woman, the hardest thing about growing old is becoming invisible. There’s something very front and center about being young.
But I think it’s more that when you’re young, you’re invincible, you’re immortal – or at least you think you are. The possibilities are limitless, you’re inventing the future. Then you get older and suddenly you have a history. It’s fixed. You can’t change anything. I find that a bit disturbing, to be honest.
If we can come up with innovations and train young people to take on new jobs, and if we can switch to clean energy, I think we have the capacity to build this world not dependent on fossil-fuel. I think it will happen, and it won’t destroy economy.
There is no sadder sight than a young pessimist.
The young are in great danger. Much evil results from their light and trifling reading. Much time is lost which should be spent in useful employment. Some would even deprive themselves of sleep that they might finish some ridiculous love story.
If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.
I’m realizing that for so much of my life I had an older viewpoint; I saw things as an older person. That’s common among change-of-life babies. So I have this dichotomy where I’m either, like, super young or feel like I’m coming to the end of my years.
