Listen, if Bill Belichick were coaching in Poland, I think you’d be excited about playing for him.
When I first starting coaching, I used a megaphone.
I loved coaching.
For me coaching is about seeing a vision and trying to sell that vision to the players through a day to day teaching of the job.
When your team needs you to fall back or your coaching staff needs you to fall back, they’re going to pull you back a little bit.
It’s part of, I guess, one of the harder parts about coaching is you have to make some tough decisions.
If you ever look at my history of coaching in South Africa, no team has ever gone down. And I’m talking about places in the league. They’ve always gone up.

As an owner, you have a choice. Do you want to adopt a vision that you think is real sharp and real cutting edge and could get you from good to great – has a chance – or do you want to just say the organization is not about that, and we’re not going to try to adopt a new coaching philosophy and vision.
When I got out of coaching, I had taught a class at the University of California, an extension class on football for fans. I was looking for tools. I was showing them films. I was going to write a textbook. Trip Hawkins came to me about making it a game for computers.
When I don’t have control of the ball, what do I do? I press to get it back. It’s a way of defending. But more important is that I like to have the ball. That’s why I believe in individual coaching sessions to prepare players properly.
Coaches don’t sleep for a reason. They don’t sleep because it’s a danger zone every night. Very seldom do you ever get two or three days off… The lifestyle of coaching in the NBA is a tremendous challenge that gives you tremendous highs but also tremendous lows.
With the 24-second clock, they throw up the shot so fast you don’t see plays worked very often. With the extra six seconds, you can regroup after a missed shot and work another play. It would put more coaching in the game.
I miss coaching – certain elements of coaching.
It’s not that easy for some of these players in China to get the coaching they need.
I love giving back. There were a lot of people when I got started who really helped me. I do a lot of seminars and appearances. It’s neat to be able to be in a position to do that. I’ve always loved coaching; it’s how I got started.
My job is to get my shots up, to come to work, to watch film and get out of there. I don’t get into the management and coaching side, that’s their job – that’s what they get paid for.
But when it comes to things of the mind, things like coaching, game-planning, coming up with offensive and defensive schemes, there’s no reason why a woman couldn’t be in the mix and shouldn’t be in the mix.
But when you have a coaching staff that draws the last play for you, you better go out there with the confidence.
I enjoyed coaching so much that I just have to stay with it. Don Coryell – I love him, and I think he was a great coach – but I hear he’s going to build a house on some island. He’s going to divorce himself from football, and that’s a mystery to me.
I never expected to do what I can, but with my coaching staff and my training and coming to terms with my own ability and my own talent and realizing the potential that there is, I’ve decided that I want to make a run for it. I’m training, and I’m fighting for a title.
