Hunter and I never got proper journalistic accreditation to go anywhere. Nobody was giving us passes to go in here or there. We always had to somehow talk our way in.
That moment in ‘Broadcast News’ where Holly Hunter is told how great it is to be the smartest person in the room, and she cries and says it’s awful – I definitely have moments like that sometimes, moments when introspection and drive can be lonely-making. And it doesn’t help that I have a partner who is very work-oriented.
The narrative of ‘man the hunter’ presupposes that men provided the nutrition, invented the tools, and established social organization and communication through the hunt, and that women were just sitting by the fire waiting for evolution to drag them out by the hair in the 1960s in order to participate.
What was very interesting to me about Clementine Hunter’s work is that she couldn’t read or write, and she has recorded history of the plantation life and the southern part of the U.S. – the cotton harvests, pecan picking, washing clothes, funerals, marriages – in pictures.
‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’ is without a doubt the best film we are ever likely to see on the subject – unless there is a sequel, which is unlikely, because at the end, the Lincolns are on their way to the theater.
I am an avid hunter and marksman, and I will not hesitate to shoot anyone who has myself or family in fear for our lives.
